Cyclones Win A "Wild" One
7/30/04
The Cyclones topped the Lowell Spinners (16-25) by a score of 5-4 in an eleven inning, four hour and five minute marathon. In a wild contest that featured eight different pitchers, 78 total batter, 23 strikeouts and a 16 minute delay due to fireworks, it was appropriate that the winning run would score in unlikely fashion. Derran Watts crossed home with the winning run after Jim Burt swung at strike three and the ball eluded the Lowell catcher for a wild pitch. Jose Rodriguez (2-1) got the win for the Cyclones after pitching 2.2 innings of relief, allowing only one hit while striking out two.
The Spinners scored an unearned run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead before the Cyclones came to bat. In the bottom of the third inning, Brooklyn evened up the score when Aaron Hathaway scored thanks to a throwing error by Lowell’s starter Anibal Sanchez on Kevin Rios’ sacrifice bunt attempt. Sanchez’ throw to first soared over the first baseman’s head, which allowed Hathaway to score from second base and knotted the score at 1-1.
It stayed that way until the top of the fifth when the Lowell Spinners had runners on first and third with one man out and Matt Ciaramella at bat. Ciaramella roped a line drive into left-center field, where Dante Brinkley made an outstanding catch before crashing into the wall, the runner on third tagged up to score and put the Spinners up 2-1, but the runner on first was doubled off to prevent any further runs from scoring. Brooklyn responded quickly with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ambiorix Concepcion started the rally with a triple and came around to score on an RBI single by Tyler Davidson. Grant Psomas followed Davidson with a single of his own and after Ryan Coultas advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, Jim Burt drove them home with a two RBI single to put Brooklyn up by a score of 4-2.
But once again, Lowell fought back, scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to knot the score at 4-4. It appeared as though Lowell would break that deadlock in the top of the ninth inning when John Otness singled to right field with runners on first and second base with two men out, but Ambiorix Concepcion came up firing and gunned out Christian Lara trying to score from second and kept the game tied and send the contest into extra innings.
The teams matched zeros in the tenth, but in the bottom of the eleventh the Cyclones broke through to win the game. Grant Psomas, who was later replaced by pinch runner Derran Watts, singled to start the frame. Watts proceeded to steal second base and advance to third on a throwing error by Lowell’s catcher Patrick Perry. On the next pitch, Jim Burt struck out swinging at a pitch that sailed over the catchers head for a wild pitch, which allowed Derran Watts to scamper home from third for the game winning run.
The Cyclones go for the sweep tomorrow when they take on the Lowell Spinners at 6:00 pm. Saturday evening will be “Halloween in July” at KeySpan Park and fans are encouraged to dress in costume for the occasion.
