so did Contreras his last 2 starts... and most of the first half of the season, and some of the second half, if he's more consistent it was a good trade.... although I doubt it :notme:

The Sox wanted him earlier in the year for the bullpen.

I'm okay with trading Contreras, but for LOAIZA? Wha?

He was pitching so well for a stretch of like 4 starts prior to his last 2 starts, both of which weren't "normal" (Boston is never a normal start and his last one was on 3 days rest). I'm not upset that Contreras is traded, but Loiza is just as bad :(

I just realized Loaiza is a FA after this year.

That makes it better. This smells like a salary dump. A YANKEE salary dump

I never thought I would ever hear that phrase in my lifetime. :rolling

I know, I still can't believe I wrote that :evillol

But I don't think they made this deal for THIS YEAR, because it was a lateral move. They both suck, but Loaiza will only suck for us for three months whereas Contreras would suck for us for three months and all of 2005 :D. This means we have a rotation spot to fill this offseason :naughty:

Chisox73

So we basically call this an even trade at this pont?

milky_way
07-31-2004, 06:55 PM
I guess so. Contreras has the stuff to dominate, but he's a headcase. I've begun to think that he's another Jeff Weaver, who isn't a bad pitcher but just one who couldn't pitch with the Yanks. In an environment with less pressure I think Contreras could succeed.

But back to Loaiza. His home/road splits are crazy

Home:
11 Starts, 6-1, 5.94 ERA
69.2 IP
84 H
46 ER
16 HR
21 BB
48 K
.298 BA

Away:
10 Starts, 3-4, 3.80 ERA
71 IP
72 H
30 ER
7 HR
24 BB
35 K
.267 BA

Put me out there, I'll pitch... I can get up to 35 mph, and my curveball will most likely hit the stands... unhittable!!!

Crap, from positive stats to negative ones. Loaiza's been getting worse and worse every month

Sorry, I don't understand this trade :notme: Could be just one of those "maybe a switch will do both guys good" swaps. Might work out for both clubs or blow up in both clubs' faces.

Contreras was traded for ONE reason. He could not beat Boston. Period. Dude was 15-3 against everyone else.

He will be okay in Chitown.

Only if he doesn't pitch against the Red Sox. We have to go to Fenway in a couple of weeks.

ya know what, im pretty sure that is the right reason. the only reason. yankees gave up contreras and 3 mil for loiza. i guess they're hoping for last years numbers in new york...i dunno.

The Red Sox have a bullpen coach named Cookie Rojas. He was Jose's pitching coach in Cuba. He knows Contreras inside out. Every Sox player will tell you Jose has great stuff. They just know what's coming. You'll like him.

It also frees the Yanks from being stuck with a sucky, highly paid starter next season since Loaiza is a FA after this year whereas Contreras has one more year left. I really think this is a salary dump for the Yanks.

Contreras has sucked against a lot of teams. He sucks spectacularly against Boston, but he's also sucked against other teams too. His problems go deeper than just Boston and his ex-coach. Whenever there's a baserunner he freaks out. And then the baserunner steals his way to third. And then he gives up a homer. And then he freaks out more.

But I do expect him to be better, and I do agree that this trade was influenced heavily by his fireworks display this past Sunday. I think he could definitely use a change of scenery and I expect him to be good in Chicago.

I thought we just sent over 5 million?

I just looked up Jose's contract. It's actually for FOUR years . I don't know why I thought it was for 3

PissedPrincess

It was 4 years. You are in year 2.

milky_way
08-01-2004, 12:48 AM
So the Yanks would save $10 million by not having Jose in 05 and 06 alone. They'll save a little more depending on how much is left on Contreras and Loaiza's contract this year, which are numbers I can't seem to find right now :banghead

I don't think it would matter if Jose was making 30 million a year, the Yankees are a team that can admit a mistake and then go out and cover that up with 2-3 expensive free agent signings........Steinbrenner is the man

You guys read The Sporting News? Cashman actually says Contreras was traded because he couldn't beat our arch trival the Red Sox. Hilarious. :laff:
