August 2, 2004
MIAMI (AP) -- The Florida Marlins placed closer Armando Benitez on the 15-day disabled list Monday with inflammation in his right elbow.
The move is retroactive to July 23.
The right-handed Benitez will be eligible to play Saturday when the Marlins return home to face Milwaukee. The Marlins begin a three-game series at Arizona on Tuesday.
Right-hander Guillermo Mota, acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, is expected to take over as closer.
Newly acquired No. 5 starter Ismael Valdez will take Benitez's spot on the 25-man roster.
Benitez is 2-1 with 33 saves and a 1.25 ERA this season. Opposing batters are hitting just .162 against him.
