Wrist injury might disable Burrell
SAN DIEGO - Pat Burrell tried to ignore the pain in his left wrist, which he tweaked in batting practice before Tuesday's game against the Padres. Burrell finished practice, blasted two bombs in the game (both caught), recorded an outfield assist, his eighth of the season, then drove a single to rightfield to start the winning, seventh-inning rally.
Burrell then awoke yesterday with significant swelling in the wrist. At first the Phillies decided to just scratch him from the lineup, ice the joint and hope for the best today. But Burrell didn't immediately respond to treatment and plans changed - drastically.
Burrell will fly back to Philadelphia today so team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti can examine the wrist tomorrow at the Rothman Institute at Jefferson Hospital. He is hitting .263 with 18 homers and 68 RBI (but only .222 since June ended), and serves as Jim Thome's protection as the team's fifth hitter.
In case Burrell lands on the disabled list while the team finishes its road trip this weekend, Triple A utilityman Lou Collier, 30, will join the team today. Collier, with 283 major league games and a .236 big-league average, is hitting .326 with 14 homers and 66 RBI in 101 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
