Orioles OF Matos out for season

BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles announced Wednesday that outfielder Luis Matos will undergo season-ending surgery on his right leg.

Matos, who has an open stress fracture of his lower right shin, will undergo surgery at an undetermined date.

Already on the disabled list, Matos suffered the injury July 21 while making a catch up against the Green Monster in Fenway Park.

Matos is batting .224 with six homers and 28 RBI in 89 games this season. The 25-year-old hit just .115 over his last 18 contests.

Here's an update...

Center fielder Luis Matos had successful surgery Wednesday to place a stabilizing rod in his fractured right shin. The procedure was performed by Dr. Andrew Cosgarea at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Orioles head trainer Richie Bancells said Matos will be on crutches for seven to 10 days and will be able to resume baseball activities in about three months.
