Phillies to televise 161 games in 2002
Networks tap up to 10 games for national broadcasts
By Phillies Media Relations
A total of 161 Phillies regular season games, including a potential 10 national telecasts, will be televised in 2002, Rory McNeil, the ball club's Director of Broadcasting & Video Services, announced today.
"We're ecstatic to be able to provide virtually every game to the region's viewing audience," said McNeil. "In addition, we couldn't be happier about the increase from three to seven games on FOX which is a clear indication of the network's positive perception of the Phillies for the upcoming season."
The schedule includes 104 telecasts on Comcast SportsNet, 45 on WPSG-UPN 57, seven national on FOX, and five on CN8. Additionally, the Phillies have been selected by ESPN for potentially three Sunday night telecasts.
Comcast SportsNet kicks off its regular season schedule with the season opener on Monday, April 1, 1:05 p.m. against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. In addition, CSN will televise three Spring Training games from Florida on Monday, March 11, 7:15 p.m. vs. the New York Yankees (at Tampa); Saturday, March 16, 1:05 p.m. vs. Tampa Bay (Clearwater), and Sunday, March 24, 1:05 p.m. vs. Minnesota (Clearwater).
CN8 will carry five night games: Wednesday, April 3 (at Atlanta); Tuesday, April 9 (vs. Atlanta); Wednesday, April 10 (vs. Atlanta); Friday, April 12 (vs. Cincinnati), and Wednesday, April 17 (at Florida).
The UPN 57 regular season begins on Thursday, April 4 (at Atlanta), 7:35 p.m. Their slate of games also includes three games from Spring Training: Sunday, March 3, 1:05 p.m. vs. Toronto (at Dunedin); Sunday, March 17, 1:05 p.m. against the Boston Red Sox (at Ft. Myers); and Saturday, March 23, 1:05 p.m. vs. Cincinnati (at Sarasota).
In addition, UPN 57 will air Phillies Weekly, a 30-minute pre-game show, before each Sunday game telecast.
Announcers
New Hall-of-Famer Harry Kalas returns with Chris Wheeler and Larry Andersen to handle the Phillies television on-air announcing duties. During games, those three will rotate with Scott Graham for the radio broadcasts on WPEN 950 AM, the new radio home for the Phillies. Ron Burke returns for his second year as host of Phillies Weekly as does Tom McCarthy who will host Phillies On-Deck, a 30-minute radio pre-game show that airs before each game on WPEN. McCarthy will also host the post-game show on WPEN.
Radio Network
As announced last fall, all 162 Phillies games will be heard on WPEN 950 AM. In addition, Phillies baseball can be heard on the 19-station Phillies Radio Network throughout the tri-state area. WPEN will also broadcast 11 games from spring training starting with the Grapefruit League opener on Saturday, March 2, 1:05 p.m. against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium in Clearwater, FL.
Once again, all Phillies regular season game broadcasts will be available through the Phillies Web site.
Television Network
WLYH-UPN 15 returns as a Phillies television affiliate in the Lebanon-Lancaster-Harrisburg region carrying 39 regular season games and two spring training games. WSWB-WB 38, from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre region, also returns with a package of 20 games.
