Cyclones Deck Cards To Snap Four Game Skid
8/09/04
The Cyclones beat the New Jersey Cardinals by a score of 8-1 on Monday evening to snap the Cyclones four game losing streak. Brooklyn pounded out 11 hits, three of which were home runs, and were aided by solid pitching from starter Michael Devaney (2-0) who picked up the win. With the win, the Cyclones improved their record to 29-20 and kept a 1.5 game lead over the Hudson Valley Renegades for the McNamara Division lead.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Cyclones starter Michael Devaney settled down and went on to pitch five solid innings allowing only the one run, on eight hits while walking three and striking out two on the way to his second win of the year. Brooklyn’s bats finally woke up from their four game hibernation, thanks in large part to the offensive efforts of the middle of the Cyclones order. Cleanup hitter Tyler Davidson got the Cyclones on the board with a behemoth blast in the bottom of the fourth inning which knotted the game at 1-1. Ambiorix Concepcion followed Davidson with a single, and his league leading nineteenth stolen base, before coming around on and RBI single by Grant Psomas to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.

The Cyclones weren’t done lighting up the scoreboard though. In the bottom of the sixth, Dante Brinkley hit his sixth home run of the season when he stroked a solo shot to increase the Brooklyn lead to 3-1. In the seventh, Brooklyn crushed any hopes of a Cardinals comeback when they scored four more times. Corey Coles chased home Aaron Hathaway with an RBI triple to get the scoring started and after Derran Watts walked, Dante Brinkley drove both men home with a double off the right field wall. Tyler Davidson then continued the rally when he drove Brinkley home with an RBI single to give the Cyclones a 7-1 advantage. Matt Fisher added his second home run of the season with a solo blast in the eighth inning to make the final score 8-1.

The Cyclones return to action tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm, when they take on the rival Staten Island Yankees in the first game of a three game series. Mike Swindell (2-1) will toe the rubber for the Cyclones. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the KeySpan Park box office beginning at 10:00 am.
