Vazquez to miss start Wednesday due to pink eye
August 10, 2004
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- New York Yankees pitcher Javier Vazquez will miss his scheduled start Wednesday night against the Texas Rangers because of pink eye.
The right-hander has been bothered by pink eye for nearly a week. He remained in New York on Tuesday and could rejoin the team for its series next week in Minnesota.
"It's just something that hasn't gone away," manager Joe Torre said. "He's feeling better, but he's frustrated by being shut down because he wants to pitch."
Right-hander Tanyon Sturtze will start in Vazquez's place Wednesday.
Vazquez earned his 10th win in his last 12 decisions Friday against Toronto despite pitching with pink eye. He allowed three runs and six hits in eight innings of New York's 11-6 win. He is 13-6 with a 4.12 ERA in his first season with the Yankees.
