CALLING OUT THE UMP

August 13, 2004 -- ARLINGTON — The Yankees haven't ruled out filing a complaint with MLB against umpire Angel Hernandez after his vulgar diatribe against Derek Jeter following Wednesday night's game.

"I have no comment on that," GM Brian Cashman said when asked if the Yankees would be contacting MLB.

"I won't comment on that," Joe Torre said.

The Yankees have an avenue to file a complaint, and considering George Steinbrenner sends volumes of tape on calls blown by umpires to MLB offices, it's safe to say the club will at least contact Sandy Alderson.

According to several people on the field Wednesday night, Hernandez shouted, "Bleep you, you bleeping bleep" at Jeter, whom Hernandez called out on a close play at first in the top of the ninth.

Jeter refused to discuss the issue.

Hernandez, easily the most abrasive umpire in baseball, was behind the plate last night.
