For those who don't know him well here is an analysis of how he does things...

La Russa, starting his seventh season with the Cardinals, has directed them to two division titles and a tie for another last year. Still, he doesn't think his job is complete until he gets the Cardinals their 10th World Series win.
La Russa is a hands-on manager, for the most part, although he entrusts almost all the pitching decisions to his longtime aid Duncan. La Russa is a big believer in a versatile bench, where several players can play several positions so that he needs only five bench players and can go with 12 pitchers.
The Cardinals don't steal a lot of bases, but La Russa likes to put runners in motion on the hit-and-run. The players believe in La Russa and his methods. Even though he has been managing in the majors since 1978, he seems up to date with the modern athlete.
