Orioles add cartoon logo to uniforms
Orange-billed hats also will be used for all home games

Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore Orioles will add a cartoon logo to their uniform and jacket sleeves for the 2002 season, the club announced today.

The "Fun Bird" character, a full-bodied bird holding a bat in a right-handed batter's position, will appear on the left sleeve of the Orioles' home and road uniforms and their warm-up jackets. It will serve as a secondary mark to the club's official logo, an ornithologically correct Oriole backed by a diamond.

The cartoon bird was created in 1997 for the Orioles' "Dugout Club," a program for kids 14 and under offering game tickets and other membership amenities.

"We've gotten great response, especially from kids, with the Dugout Club bird and we wanted to extend that feeling of fun," said Orioles Chief Operating Officer JOE FOSS. "It's something of a 'retro' look which we think fans will like, and it's especially fitting as we develop more home-grown talent from our minor league system as in the past."

The logo was created by Ken Mitchroney, an Orioles fan and cartoonist/animator for Disney Animation who has worked on such movies as "Toy Story II" and "Monsters, Inc." as well as numerous television shows and comic books.

The Orioles also announced that they will wear hats with an orange bill for all home games, with the all-black hat serving as the road game hat. Previously, the Orioles wore the orange-billed hat only with the alternate black jerseys. The design of the hat will not change.

The new "Fun Bird" can be seen on a billboard at the northbound entrance to the Jones Falls Expressway in downtown Baltimore beginning this Wednesday, February 13, as a kick-off to the start of spring training this week.
