Ravens: Sanders' return is official
The News
Deion Sanders signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Ravens on Tuesday, making his heavily rumored return from retirement official. The 37 year-old cornerback passed a physical before signing and will report to practice on Wednesday. He has not played since the 2000 season when he was a member of the Redskins. "What a resource," Ravens' head coach Brian Billick told the Associated Press of Sanders. "I can't imagine our younger players or our guys that have not had a lot of playing time aren't going to hang on every word that this guy has to offer." Sanders will play nickel back for the Ravens.
Our View
After two weeks of rumors and speculation that was fueled primarily by Sanders himself, Deion's return is official. As for Billick's comments regarding his younger players hanging on Sanders' every word, we're not so sure that's a good thing. After all, about the only thing they're likely to learn from Deion is just how great Deion thinks Deion is. Don't get us wrong, Sanders was a great player, but he was never shy about letting everyone know just how talented he was. As a nickel back, Sanders won't have much fantasy value in leagues that award points for individual defensive players. There is no word yet as to whether he will return punts as he did while in his prime.

Patriots: Miller released
The News
The Patriots released veteran quarterback Jim Miller on Tuesday. Miller, 33, had been competing for a backup job behind starter Tom Brady. The former Bears' starting signal caller had been bothered by shoulder problems throughout training camp.
Our View
It's no surprise that the Pats have elected to go with Rohan Davey and Kliff Kingsbury as Brady's backups this season. Miller has been injured more times than Robert Downey Jr. has been arrested, and he hasn't been an effective on the field over the last few years.

Raiders: Woodson ends holdout
The News
Raiders' cornerback Charles Woodson reported to team headquarters on Tuesday and signed an $8.782 million tender. "I guess it's just been long enough," Woodson told ESPN. "We tried out different tactics, and it's just been long enough. It's time to get back in and get to work." Woodson recorded 70 tackles and three interceptions last season.
Our View
Woodson reported one day after Raiders' head coach Norv Turner said that he would not start or play nickel back in week one of the regular season. Turner also said that Woodson would not play in the preseason game against the Rams on Thursday. Only time will tell whether Turner sticks to his guns now that Woodson has reported.

Jets: Mickens might miss week one
The News
Jets' cornerback Ray Mickens' injured knee might prevent him from playing in week one of the regular season. He has been sidelined since Aug. 16 with what Jets' head coach Herm Edwards has described as a knee sprain. Mickens is scheduled to undergo another MRI this week and has been ruled out of playing in the final preseason game against the Eagles on Friday. If Mickens is unable to play, Derrick Straight would replace him at nickel back, according to the New York Daily News.
Our View
Mickens has no value in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Titans: Calico to miss two-to-three weeks
The News
Titans' wide receiver Tyrone Calico is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Wednesday and will be sidelined for two-to-three weeks, according to an ESPN.com report.
Our View
Calico actually sprained both knees when he was dragged down from behind during the preseason game against the Cowboys on Monday. The injuries appeared to be more serious when they first occurred, so the fact that Tyrone is only expected to miss a week or two of regular season action is good news for fantasy owners.

Cardinals: Hambrick and Zellner acquired for draft pick
The News
The Cardinals traded an undisclosed conditional draft pick to the Raiders for running back Troy Hambrick and defensive end Peppi Zellner on Tuesday, according to the Arizona Republic. Hambrick, who started for the Cowboys last season, will serve as the primary backup to Emmitt Smith, just as he did in Dallas for three seasons. Zellner is also a former Cowboy and recorded six sacks from 1999 through 2002 before playing for the Redskins last year.
Our View
We knew that Cardinals' head coach Dennis Green had been desperate to find a backup rusher ever since Marcell Shipp suffered a leg injury that will likely sideline him for the entire season, but we didn't know The Sheriff would resort to acquiring Hambrick. Troy was a major flop for the Cowboys last season and hasn't done anything to change his reputation this summer. The Cards were also in need of a defensive end, and this trade explains why Green shifted rookie Darnell Dockett back to his original position at defensive tackle on Monday after trying him out at defensive end for the last few weeks.

Giants: Gramatica released; France takes over job
The News
The Giants released kicker Bill Gramatica on Tuesday, the team's official web site reported. Todd France is now the only kicker on the roster and is presumed to be in line to start in the season opener on September 12. "Todd France has done a good job," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "We are going to continue to work with him and I expect that he would [start in the opener], yes."
Our View
The Giants entered the summer with a three-man battle between Gramatica, France, and Matt Bryant, and this is the first battle that France has won since Napoleon Bonaparte roamed across Europe. We don't recommend using France or any other kicker that the Giants employ this season.

Steelers: Fair among six players released
The News
The Steelers released veteran cornerback Terry Fair and five other players on Monday. Fair had signed a one-year, $535,000 contract during the offseason. The Steelers also released wide receivers Freddie Milons and Brian Robinson, defensive tackle David Upchurch, and linebackers Allen Augustin and Nathaniel Adibi.
Our View
You may recall that the Lions selected Fair one pick before the Vikings chose Randy Moss in the 1998 draft. Believe it or not, Matt Millen was not the Lions' general manager at the time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 5:19 PM ET
Cowboys: Cason amongst nine players released
The News
The Cowboys released running back Aveion Cason on Tuesday, the team's official web site. The team also waved goodbye to cornerback Donald Mitchell, linebacker Markus Steele, punter Ryan Flinn, defensive tackles Shaun Smith and Dave Volk, defensive ends Darrell Lee and John Taylor, and wide receiver Cedric James.
Our View
Cason and Mitchell were the two notable players here. With Julius Jones and Eddie George on board and ReShard Lee running well, the Cowboys no longer had a need for the smallish but speedy Cason. Mitchell was slated to play in nickel situations, but clearly head coach Bill Parcells likes some of his younger, less experienced cornerbacks more than Donald.

Falcons: Hall out for six to 10 weeks
The News
Falcons' cornerback DeAngelo Hall will miss six to 10 weeks due to a minor hip fracture, according to an Associated Press report. The No. 8 pick in the draft suffered the injury while trying to bat down a pass during a preseason game against the Bengals on Saturday. "By no means is it season-ending or anything like that," Falcons' head coach Jim Mora told the Associated Press. Mora added that Kevin Mathis will replace Hall in the starting lineup for the preseason game against the Redskins on Friday.
Our View
Hall looked solid during his three preseason outings, aside from the play he was burned by Vikings' wideout Randy Moss for a long touchdown. Mathis played in 14 games last season and had one interception. He is a downgrade from the rookie Hall, which means fantasy owners should give strong consideration to starting the wideouts he is assigned to cover.

Chargers: Edwards to play first half vs. 49ers
The News
Linebacker Donnie Edwards (calf) will play into the second quarter, longer than most starters, in an effort to get tuned up for the team's season opener against Houston, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Our View
Edwards has essentially missed all of training camp, but we see no reason why the tackling machine won't be ready for another monster season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 3:19 PM ET
Colts: Jefferson has arthroscopic knee surgery
The News
Cornerback Joseph Jefferson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Monday and will miss at least four weeks. Jefferson was expected to compete with Nick Harper and Donald Strickland for a starting job.
Our View
The Indy secondary is pretty banged up, meaning Tom Brady and the Patriots' receiving corps make a solid week-one fantasy play.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 2:33 PM ET
Vikings: Robinson to return to practice Saturday
The News
Marcus Robinson will return to practice on Saturday after he sits out his third preseason game Thursday with a strained left hamstring.
Our View
Robinson has fallen to third on the depth chart and his lack of preseason involvement probably means he'll have a very limited role against the Cowboys in week one. Nate Burleson is a better play at this point.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 1:56 PM ET
Broncos: No worries about Lelie
The News
Despite catching only two passes and being thoroughly outplayed by rookie Darius Watts throughout the preseason, the Broncos aren't concerned about third-year receiver Ashley Lelie's lack of production. "It's a combination of the starters not playing much and personnel groups limiting the number of receivers on the field," receivers' coach Steve Watson told the Rocky Mountain News. "And, just by chance, balls haven't been thrown in certain directions. But it's just luck of the draw."
Our View
Lelie and offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak also discussed how beneficial his work against shutdown corner Champ Bailey in training camp will be when the season gets going. Ashley's quiet preseason appears to be nothing more than a lack of opportunity, and we're sticking with one of our favorite sleepers.

Raiders: LB Harris progressing
The News
Raiders head coach Norv Turner is encouraged that middle linebacker Napoleon Harris (knee) may be able to play against Pittsburgh in the season opener. "The doctors give Napoleon a pretty good chance," he told the Contra Costa Times.
Our View
Fantasy owners may have gotten Harris for very cheap in their defensive drafts because of this injury, but it appears he will be ready to go sooner than later.

Titans: Berlin moves past injured Schifino for No. 4 spot
The News
Jake Schifino, the front runner in the battle to be the Titans' No. 4 receiver, continues to be plagued by hamstring problems, and that has cost him his spot in the lineup. Because of Schifino's injury problems, Eddie Berlin is being moved into the No. 4 role. "He's been the most consistent," offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said in a published report. "He hasn't gotten hurt. He runs the most consistent routes. In my opinion, Eddie Berlin is the fourth-best receiver right now."
Our View
Whomever lays claim to this job could see their fantasy value skyrocket if No. 3 wideout Tyrone Calico misses any significant time with the knee injuries he suffered Monday against Dallas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 1:28 PM ET
Texans: Walker still on track
The News
Defensive end Gary Walker has not practiced for the past week because of a strained groin, but he still expects to be in the starting lineup September 12 against the Chargers. "I know where I'm at and where I plan to be," Walker told the Houston Chronicle.
Our View
The Texans desperately need Walker and fellow oft-injured defensive lineman Seth Payne to stay healthy, lest they repeat last season's abysmal performance that saw them rank 31st against both the run and the pass.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 1:19 PM ET
Colts: Pyatt out two to six weeks
The News
Wide receiver Brad Pyatt, who was leading the AFC in kickoff returns before a neck injury prematurely ended his season last November, will be out two to six weeks with a deep thigh bruise.
Our View
Without Pyatt, the Colts will be scrambling for help in the return game. Dominic Rhodes and Brian Allen have returned kicks in the past, but both are battling injuries of their own. DeAndrew Rubin becomes Indy's top kick returner by default.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 1:19 PM ET
Rams: Gordon returns to practice a week early
The News
Rams' running back Lamar Gordon returned to practice on Monday for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery in early August. Gordon participated mostly in individual drills, but he did take a couple a couple of reps with the team. "Talking to the trainers, it seems like he's probably a full week ahead of schedule," Rams' head coach Mike Martz told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Gordon is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Raiders on Thursday.
Our View
Gordon will likely be listed as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart behind Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson. Faulk always seems to be just a play away from an injury, but until Marshall actually suffers another one, Gordon has no real fantasy value.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 1:13 PM ET
Chiefs: Hall won't be overworked
The News
The Chiefs are cautious about over-extending return specialist Dante Hall in the wake of injuries to their receiving corps and will likely use several receivers to help make up for the absences of Johnnie Morton (Achilles' tendon) and Marc Boerigter (knee). Undrafted rookie Richard Smith, third-round pick Samie Parker, little-used Chris Horn, and tight ends Kris Wilson and Jason Dunn will all see more playing time, according to the Kansas City Star.
Our View
Smith and Wilson have been training camp standouts, but they still have a long way to go before becoming fantasy significant. The upshot here is that Trent Green may be relying on his favorite targets, running back Priest Holmes and tight end Tony Gonzalez, even more than usual this season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 1:09 PM ET
Chargers: Brees to start final preseason game
The News
Coach Marty Schottenheimer told the San Diego Union-Tribune that veteran Drew Brees will start the Chargers' final preseason game against the 49ers, but would not specify the rotation between he and rookie Philip Rivers beyond that.
Our View
This doesn't provide much insight into Marty's intentions, but what is apparent is the fact that he's giving Rivers every chance to beat out Brees for the starting job.

Cardinals: Johnson returns to practice
The News
The Cardinals were finally able to practice with one of their three starting wide receivers on Monday for the first time since mid-August. No. 3 wideout Bryant Johnson returned to practice on Monday after sitting out since June with a stress fracture in his foot. "He looked rusty," Cardinals' head coach Dennis Green told the Arizona Republic of Johnson. "He looked like how a guy would look when he hasn't run in over two months." Johnson is not expected to play in the final preseason game against the Broncos on Thursday.
Our View
Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald are both expected to play in week one of the regular season when the Cardinals play the Rams. Johnson has a tad more fantasy value due to the injury to the Cards' No. 1 receiver Anquan Boldin. Johnson was expected to be the No. 3 receiver, but he will likely play the No. 2 role behind Fitzgerald until Boldin returns.

Lions: McMahon will probably start preseason finale
The News
Lions' starting quarterback Joey Harrington will probably sit out Thursday's final preseason game. The reasons: head coach Steve Mariucci wants to avoid a fluky injury in a meaningless preseason game and he wants to get backup Mike McMahon some playing time with the first team offense.
Our View
You'll remember last year that Mooch lost his starting running back, James Stewart, to a season ending shoulder injury in the final preseason game. No reason to tempt fate again. Expect to see Harrington wearing a baseball cap rather than a helmet on Thursday.

Seahawks: Lewis might be placed on injured reserve
The News
Seahawks' linebacker D.D. Lewis appears to be headed for the injured reserve list. Lewis's surgically repaired shoulder has been giving him problems three weeks ago and he was unable to practice on Monday after testing the shoulder the day before, according to the Seattle Times-Intelligencer. Lewis played in 15 games last season and recorded 65 tackles.
Our View
Seahawks' head coach Mike Holmgren was planning to move Lewis into the starting lineup in place of the injured Chad Brown, who is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks following surgery to repair the leg he broke during practice. If Lewis is placed on injured reserve, it would end his season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 12:46 PM ET
Ravens: Douglas okay to start season
The News
Defensive end Marques Douglas, sidelined with a dislocated elbow, was cleared to return to practice and should be available for the season opener September 12. Ravens coach Brian Billick said it was unlikely Douglas would play in the exhibition finale against the Giants, though Douglas—who missed 11 games in 2002 after undergoing knee surgery—wants to be on the field.
Our View
The Ravens feared Douglas might miss the first two games of the season, so this is welcome news. With the return of Douglas and Chris McAlister and the addition of Deion Sanders, the Ravens' defense is once again shaping up to be among the most formidable in the league.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 12:39 PM ET
Broncos: Walls back in the lineup
The News
Cornerback Lenny Walls, out since July 28 while recovering from ankle surgery, has regained his spot in the starting lineup opposite Champ Bailey, according to the Denver Post. Unlike most of the starters, Walls may play an entire half in the team's final preseason game in order to continue catching up from missing almost all of training camp.
Our View
Walls is certainly worth keeping an eye on, as opposing quarterbacks will be throwing his way a lot with Bailey shutting down the other side of the field. His length—at 6-4, he is the tallest cornerback in the NFL—gives him a chance to make plays.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 2004 12:36 PM ET
Bengals: Warrick returns to practice
The News
Wide receiver Peter Warrick, who has been slowed throughout the preseason by the lingering effects of arthroscopic knee surgery last December, returned to practice Monday. Warrick plans to play in the Bengals' final preseason game this Friday against the Colts, and said he also intends to regain his job as punt returner.
Our View
Warrick is coming off a season in which he set career marks in catches (79), receiving yards (819), and total touchdowns (eight). He's a little nicked and will quite possibly lose some balls to Kelley Washington, who's charging hard at No. 3 and has taken advantage of Warrick's absence to develop a rapport with new quarterback Carson Palmer. As such, the numbers he posted last year are less a springboard to something bigger and better and more a top end of what you can expect from P-Dub going forward.

Vikings: McKinnie will play in week one
The News
Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie suffered a grade one sprain of his right knee during Friday's preseason game against the 49ers, but will be ready for their week one game against the Cowboys. "I'm not going to play Thursday against Seattle (in the preseason finale), but I'll be ready to practice next week," McKinnie told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Our View
Fantasy owners with Daunte Culpepper on their squad can breathe a sigh of relief; he will have his 6-8, 335-pounds of blind side protection in place.

August 31, 2004 12:12 PM ET
49ers: Peterson might make preseason debut
The News
49ers' head coach Dennis Erickson wants to see linebacker Julian Peterson practice for a couple of days before deciding whether to play him in the preseason game against the Chargers on Thursday. Erickson told the Mercury News that even if he elects to play Peterson, it would only be for a series or two.
Our View
Peterson didn't report to training camp until last week because of a contract holdout. He is a top-10 linebacker in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Redskins: Arrington practices
The News
Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington practiced on Monday, the team's official web site reported. He had not practiced since August 17 due to a sprained left knee.
Our View
Arrington might not play in the team's final preseason game, but he should be ready for the season opener.

Browns: Jackon still unhappy
The News
Running back James Jackson is dissatisfied being stuck behind Lee Suggs and William Green on the depth chart, especially when other teams are clamoring for his services. Monday, he let everyone know how he feels. "It wouldn't be in my best interests or their best interests for me to be here," Jackson told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "It just ain't healthy for me to be here. I ain't happy."
Our View
The Browns are sticking by their demand for at least a third-round pick for Jackson, and neither the Dolphins nor the Cardinals—Jackson's two most prominent suitors—have stepped up their offer to that level.

Chargers: Kaeding officially wins job
The News
The Chargers waived place kicker Mackenzie Hoambrecker on Monday, officially installing third-round draft pick Nate Kaeding as their starter, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Our View
Clearly, you can do better than drafting the Chargers' kicker.

August 31, 2004 11:58 AM ET
Redskins: Brunell to start season opener
The News
Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs named Mark Brunell as his starting quarterback on Monday. Brunell had been battling with Patrick Ramsey for the top spot. "We're going to go with Mark," Gibbs told the team's official web site. "It wasn't any one thing. We think the world of Patrick. I looked at all of the films from last year and I told him, 'I doubt I'd be coaching here if I didn't think he could play quarterback.' I think Patrick's tough and smart. I just felt like a decision had to be made and Mark is the person who should start for us."
Our View
Ramsey has struggled this preseason, and while Brunell hasn't exactly been crisp, Gibbs is making the right call. The Redskins are going to win with the run, and Brunell is more likely to orchestrate a clean, crisp game right now. We could still see Ramsey this season and expect Gibbs to groom the kid for the future. And, if you've read Fanball or Fantasy Football Weekly at all this preseason (or ever), you know that we don't recommend Brunell for your fantasy squad.

Packers: Couch returns to practice
The News
Packers' quarterback Tim Couch returned to practice on Monday and rotated in with the first team offense. "He appeared to be doing better," head coach Mike Sherman told the Green Bay Press Gazette. "Hopefully, we'll be able to get a better look at him this week." Couch missed last week's practices and game because of a sore throwing arm.
Our View
It's now or never for Couch, who is now battling to keep a roster spot. It's down to him, Craig Nall, or Scott McBrien for the third quarterback spot behind Brett Favre and Doug Pederson. The guess here is that if Couch practices and plays this week, he'll get the nod, Nall will be cut, and McBrien will land on the practice squad.

Giants: Seubert placed on PUP list
The News
The Giants placed offensive lineman Rich Seubert on the physically-unable-to-perform list Monday. Seubert is now ineligible to play until after week six of the regular season. The starting guard is still recovering after fracturing his right leg in three places last season.
Our View
It's not surprising that Seubert hasn't come back quickly from his nasty injury, but the Giants had hoped for the best. Rich was one of their top blockers prior to this incident, and without him, their line goes from horrible to...really horrible. They've practiced without him all preseason, though.

Eagles: Duncan, Hall amongst cuts
The News
The Eagles released 12 players on Monday and Tuesday, and kicker Tim Duncan and quarterback Andy Hall were amongst the newly unemployed. "I want to get on the wire as soon as I can," Duncan told the Eagles' official web site. Hall, a sixth-round draft pick in April, still has a chance at making the practice squad.
Our View
Duncan didn't have a shot at beating out David Akers, so that move comes as no shock. It would be a little surprising, though, if Hall didn't land back on the practice squad. Head coach Andy Reid always likes to have a young quarterback on the backburner.

Raiders: No-show Woodson loses his starting spot
The News
Standout cornerback Charles Woodson has still not reported to Raiders' practice, and coach Norv Turner told the San Francisco Chronicle that regardless of when he does show, he will not play in the preseason finale and will not start in the season opener against the Steelers on September 12.
Our View
According to the Chronicle, Woodson has not even seen the team's new defensive playbook. Cornerback is probably the most forgiving position in any new defense, but it's time for Woodson to show up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Giants: Shockey continues to sit
The News
Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey did not practice on Monday due to a hamstring strain. "We're not going to rush him back," head coach Tom Coughlin told the Bergen Record. Shockey strained his hamstring on August 21, and the paper labeled him "a question mark" for the season opener on September 12.
Our View
Our thoughts are that Shockey will play in the season opener, but we have serious doubts about how effective he will be. He's barely practiced this preseason, and there's a good chance he won't see any game action with Kurt Warner prior to September 12.

Titans: Preliminary diagnosis for Calico is two MCL strains
The News
Wide receiver Tyrone Calico, helped off the field Monday night after sustaining injuries to both knees, appears to have a matching set of MCL strains. X-rays to his knees came back negative, but Calico will have more detailed MRI exams on both knees Tuesday.
Our View
The Titans and Calico are optimistic about the injuries… but then they were optimistic about cornerback Tony Beckham (out half the season) and linebacker Peter Sirmon (out for the year) as well. Calico is slated to be Tennessee's third receiver and pick up much of the production that left town when Justin McCareins was traded to the Jets in the offseason.

Saints: Brooks returns to practice
The News
Saints' quarterback Aaron Brooks practiced on Monday despite saying that he would prefer to rest his injured quadriceps muscle until week one of the regular season. Brooks was able to roll out of the pocket during practice, but he did not run with the ball even the when the opportunity presented itself, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Saints' head coach Jim Haslett said he has not determined whether he will play Brooks in the preseason game against the Texans on Friday.
Our View
This injury has plagued Brooks throughout the preseason. We have to wonder whether Haslett is making a mistake by pushing his quarterback to practice rather than treat the injury with rest. Assuming he recovers, Brooks is considered a top-15 fantasy quarterback.

Giants: Dawson released
The News
The Giants cut wide receiver JaJuan Dawson on Monday, the team's official web site reported. Dawson was one of 10 players released.
Our View
Dawson was a surprising name on that list, as he played well in camp and had earned some praise from head coach Tom Coughlin. Apparently the Giants feel good going into the regular season with a young group of backup receivers that includes David Tyree, Willie Ponder, Jamaar Taylor, Ataveus Cash, and Avion Black. This move also solidifies Tim Carter as the team's third receiver behind starters Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard.

Bills: Milloy has surgery on broken arm
The News
Safety Lawyer Milloy, who broke his right forearm during Saturday's preseason game, had successful surgery on the arm and is out indefinitely, according to the Buffalo News. Milloy continues to insist that he will be ready to play for the season opener on September 12. Rams cornerback Travis Fisher recently had surgery on a similarly broken forearm and is out at least eight weeks.
Our View
Milloy has never missed a game in his career. For fantasy owners drafting individual defensive players, as long as Milloy is playing, he is a good play. He is a ferocious tackler who does not typically intercept a lot of passes anyways, so playing with a cast might not hurt his game. Maybe he can even club a few people down with it in the secondary.

Panthers: Moore among first cuts
The News
The Panthers cut eight players on Monday, most second-year notably fullback Casey Moore, who spent most of last season on injured reserve. The other seven players who were cut are center Toby Cecil, linebacker Jonathan Harrell, offensive tackle Ben Herrell, offensive guard Tango McCauley, defensive end Arnold Miller, linebacker Curtis Randall, and defensive end Derrick Strong, according to the Gaston Gazette.
Our View
Moore was a seventh-round draft pick last year and he wasn't going to get much playing time behind Brad Hoover and Nick Goings.

Vikings: Bennett targeting week two return
The News
Vikings running back Michael Bennett, who is recovering from a sprained knee, is targeting a return in week two at Philadelphia. "If [Onterrio Smith] didn't get himself a vacation, we wouldn't have any concern," head coach Mike Tice told the Star Tribune on Monday, referring to his backup running back's suspension. "We'd let Mike just take his time getting ready. Now with No. 32 having a vacation, supposedly, we'll try to push Mike to get back as soon as possible."
Our View
Rushing Bennett back into action has a chance to backfire on them. Make sure to get Moe Williams on your team if Bennett is one of your backs. Moe isn't hurt and he hasn't been suspended, so by default he has increased fantasy value.

Buccanners' offensive lineman Derrick Deese returned to practice Monday after missing three weeks following foot surgery. The 13-year veteran is scheduled to start in the preseason game against the Texans on Thursday night.
Our View
Deese is Buccaneers' starting left tackle and is the only thing standing between defensive ends and quarterback Brad Johnson's blindside. The Bucs overhauled their offensive line during the offseason, so Deese can use the playing time to acquaint himself with his new teammates.

Cowboys: Injury kicks Bryant
The News
Cowboys kicker Matt Bryant had been closing in on incumbent Billy Cundiff, but the gap widened on Monday night. Bryant missed the preseason game with a sore hamstring, while Cundiff made good on field goals from 40 and 19 yards. "It's not good," Bryant told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Especially right now. It's bad timing."
Our View
Cundiff wasn't too sharp throughout training camp and opened the door for Bryant to challenge, but this hamstring injury could easily erase Matt from the competition. Regardless, fantasy owners should not be clamoring to grab a Cowboys kicker.

Chiefs: Boerigter seeking second opinion
The News
Injured wide receiver Marc Boerigter did not undergo knee surgery on Monday as scheduled, instead opting to seek a second opinion on the knee he twisted in last weekend's preseason game against the Browns, the Kansas City Star reports.
Our View
We still expect Bo to go under the knife shortly, but we'll let you know if anything changes.

Cowboys: Jones taps up some trouble
The News
Cowboys running back Julius Jones felt a little gassed during Monday night's preseason game, and as he's likely been taught in the past, the rookie tapped his helmet as a sign that he needed a breather. Unfortunately, that's a no-no in head coach Bill Parcells' world. The coach told the team's official web site, "I wouldn't let him out. That's the way it is, man. Hey, don't tap your helmet." Jones said he expects to atone for the mistake at the next practice.
Our View
Unless you've suffered a serious injury, running backs simply don't ask Parcells for breathers and expect to stay on the coach's good side. Jones certainly knew this tenet, but now he'll likely learn the hard way as well. This move shouldn't cost the rookie any playing time, but Parcells doesn't have to look far (Eddie George) to point out a running back that doesn't ask for time off.

Panthers: Smith returns to practice
The News
Panthers' wide receiver Steve Smith returned to practice on Monday just two days after suffering a hamstring injury during the preseason game against the Patriots. Smith finished last season with 88 receptions for 1,110 yards and seven touchdowns.
Our View
Smith gave fantasy owners quite a scare on Saturday night, but it looks like he'll be fine. He is currently ranked as a top-10 wideout in most fantasy scoring formats.

Cowboys: Parcells rips into Witten
The News
Cowboys tight end Jason Witten caught seven passes for 109 yards in Monday night's preseason game, but that does not mean his coach was happy. "I expect a whole lot more run after catch from Witten," head coach Bill Parcells told the team's official web site. "Every time he sees a tackler he puts both feet in the ground. I want more running after the catch. He's another guy who's getting a penalty a week. That's three penalties for him in three weeks. So, he needs to get that stuff squared away." Witten was flagged for illegal motion in the first quarter.
Our View
In that awkward, sad, tough-love way, this is nearly a compliment from Parcells. If Bill is tearing into a player, it often means that he actually likes and cares about the guy. Sure, Jason has a lot to work on, but rest assured that Parcells plans to keep his young tight end involved in the offense throughout the season.

Falcons: Hall to miss final preseason game
The News
Falcons' starting cornerback DeAngelo Hall will sit out practice this week and might miss the preseason game against the Redskins on Friday with a hip injury. The Associated Press reports that Hall had his hip examined by an orthopedist on Monday, but that Falcons' head coach Jim Mora does not expect him to miss week one of the regular season. "I think they just want to make sure, further investigate it, so they did a couple things," Mora said. "I'm sure he's okay." The Falcons selected Hall with the No. 8 pick in the draft.
Our View
Hall is a solid prospect in keeper leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Patriots: Givens progressing
The News
David Givens has not played since early in the Partiots' second preseason game. Givens felt his hamstring tighten during that game and has been held out for precautionary reasons ever since. According to the Boston Globe, Givens is not practicing at full speed, but could be ready to play Thursday in the Pats' preseason finale against the Jaguars.
Our View
It's about time. We are still predicting good things for the third-year receiver who became Tom Brady's favorite red zone target down the stretch last year. We hope his injury doesn't continue to nag him, but we would like to see him get some preseason game action so he's on the same page with Brady once the regular season begins.

Falcons: Vick likely to see more action
The News
Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick sat out the preseason game against the Bengals on Saturday with a tight hamstring. As a result, Falcons' head coach Jim Mora is considering whether to play Vick more in the final preseason game against the Redskins on Friday than he otherwise would have. Mora told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday that the coaching staff would determine Vick's role on Tuesday.
Our View
Vick has missed practice and game time during what is a crucial learning period for him, as Mora installed the West Coast offense during the offseason. Vick has not performed well during preseason games and could use the extra playing time on Friday. So even though it looks like fantasy owners will be forced to spend the night hoping he doesn't suffer an injury, playing him more in the final preseason tune up seems like the right thing to do.

Dolphins: Latest running back rumors
The News
The Dolphins are going to give Sammy Morris more looks in the preseason finale in case shaky starter Travis Minor continues struggling. They are also still pursuing outside help. According to the Miami Herald, the team is not interested in trading a third-round pick to the Browns for James Jackson, and they are now looking at former Dolphin Lamar Smith, who will likely be released by the Saints after their game on Friday. Other possibilities include Verron Hayes or Dante Brown of Pittsburgh, or free agent Skip Hicks.
Our View
The Dolphins are almost certain to add a running back to their backfield before the regular season begins. Unless the Browns drop their asking price for Jackson, which is not out of the question, it may end up being Smith. Smith flourished in Miami in 2000 and 2001, when he averaged over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns. He had limited success with the Panthers in 2002 before being relegated to backup status with the Saints in 2003. Should he get the call, he will likely still split carries with Minor and Morris in what is shaping up to be a backfield-by-committee.

Broncos: Anderson officially done
The News
After confirming the worst at a groin specialist on Monday, the Broncos placed running back Mike Anderson on injured reserve with two torn groin muscles, effectively ending his season. Anderson was sixth in the NFL in rushing this preseason with 163 yards on 34 carries, including a touchdown.
Our View
Anderson was positioned to be the primary backup behind starter Quentin Griffin and was most suited to short-yardage and goal line work. Without him, expect rookie Tatum Bell to move up to No. 2 on the depth chart and for Griffin to get a longer leash in the red zone.

Bills: Matthews signed to back up Bledsoe
The News
The Bills signed Shane Matthews on Monday as a backup to starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe. The team lost both previous backup Travis Brown and rookie third stringer J.P. Losman to injury in the past week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Our View
Matthews is a veteran who has had some success as a backup and part-time starter with the Bears and Redskins in his eleven years in the league. He is a solid, experienced backup behind Drew Bledsoe. Bledsoe has played all 16 games in six of his last eight seasons, so don't expect Matthews to see any action. The Bills also learned Monday that the injury to Brown was not as serious as feared, and he could be back in four to six weeks.

Jets: Henderson signs contract
The News
The Jets signed defensive back Jamie Henderson on Wednesday. Terms were not released.
Our View
Henderson suffered a life-threatening head injury this offseason in a motorcycle accident, and the Jets had no obligation to re-sign him. They gave him a two-year contract for an undisclosed amount and are hoping he can be healthy enough to participate in the Jets' offseason program next spring.

Bengals: Braham undergoes surgery
The News
The Bengals' offensive line continues to be decimated by injury. Wednesday, center Rich Braham had arthroscopic knee surgery. The team is unsure if he will be available for the opener on September 12. The team is now down to just seven healthy lineman.
Our View
The Cats are also missing tackle Levi Jones (sprained knee) and guard Eric Steinbach (recovering from elbow surgery), although both could play in week one. An unhealthy offensive line does nothing for the value of the Bengals' offensive stars early in the season.

Jets: Pennington strikes it rich
The News
Chad Pennington received a $64.2 million contract extension on Wednesday. According to published reports, the deal is for seven years and includes $23 million in guaranteed bonus money.
Our View
Pennington and his agent wanted to get this deal wrapped up before the season so it wouldn't become a distraction. Now that he has a long-term deal, Pennington can concentrate on becoming the best fantasy quarterback he can be. We are expecting big things from Chad, Santana Moss, Justin McCareins, and the Jets' passing offense this year.

Chargers: Parker will play vs. 49ers
The News
Chargers.com is reporting that wide receiver Eric Parker (groin) will participate in the team's preseason finale on Thursday against San Francisco.

The Chargers have Parker listed as a starter on their most recent depth chart, so we'll be watching for any signs of fantasy life.

Raiders: Turner steps back from Woodson benching
The News
After Charles Woodson finally reported to practice, head coach Norv Turner stepped back from comments he made earlier in the week about Woodson serving as the Raiders' nickel back in the season opener. "We're going to do everything we can to get him ready and we'll see where he's at late in the week,' Turner told the San Jose Mercury News. "We'll make a decision based on how he handles everything.'
Our View
Turner did confirm that Woodson won't play in the preseason finale. We're less worried about Woodson's conditioning and ability to pick up the team's new defensive system than we are about him getting used to the new emphasis on limited contact with opposing wide receivers. In any case, he clearly makes the Raiders' defense better.

Chargers: Gates ready to go
The News
Tight end Antonio Gates, limited by a sprained ankle suffered in the second preseason game, will play on Thursday against San Francisco, according to Chargers.com.

Chiefs: Morton improving?
The News
The Chiefs have pushed back a decision on what to do with wide receiver Johnnie Morton (Achilles' tendon) until this weekend's cut-down date, citing marked improvement in his condition over the last week. "Personally, I think Johnnie Morton will be ready to go to work next Monday," coach Dick Vermeil told the Kansas City Star. "I really do. He's been feeling a little bit better every day for a week."
Our View
It's ironic how Morton is suddenly improving at the same time the Chiefs' receiving corps took a major hit with the significant knee injury to Marc Boerigter. Just a week ago, Vermeil was counting him out and the team was contemplating an injury settlement or the injured reserve list for Morton. We'll believe this when we actually see Johnnie prancing downfield.

Bears: Thomas still nursing oblique strain
The News
Running back Anthony Thomas will miss the Bears' fourth and final preseason game, September 3 against the Browns, because of his oblique strain. "The pain is pretty much gone," head coach Lovie Smith told the Daily Southtown. "He won't play this week, but he should be ready to go by next week."
Our View
Take your time, Train. No hurry. You wouldn't want to at least pretend you're competing for playing time, would you? We've been hearing that he's "almost ready" for three weeks now.

Giants: Greisen and Lewis still battling for starting job
The News
Giants' head coach Tom Coughlin said Tuesday that the battle for the starting middle linebacker job between Nick Greisen and Kevin Lewis is still open. Greisen has been playing through a strained hamstring since the first preseason game, but he declared himself ready to play in the final preseason game against the Ravens on Thursday, according to the New York Post. He asked to start the game, but coaches have decided that he will see action later in the game.
Our View
Coughlin is leery of starting Greisen because of his history of injury problems. Therefore, Lewis appears to be the frontrunner for the job and could lock it up with a good performance on Thursday.

Chargers: Caldwell to return
The News
Wide receiver Reche Caldwell, who missed the Chargers' third preseason game with a groin injury, will be back in uniform against the 49ers on Thursday, according to Chargers.com.

We'd like to see Caldwell, a second-round talent, earn a starting job—at least he has some upside.

Redskins: Brown released
The News
The Redskins released cornerback Ralph Brown on Tuesday. The move was somewhat surprising because the team had signed Brown to a two-year, $1.38 million contract prior to the season, which included a $250,000 signing bonus, according to the Washington Post.
Our View
Brown will likely catch on with one of the numerous teams that are still searching for help in the defensive secondary.

Bears: Urlacher ready to go
The News
Brian Urlacher practiced Sunday and Tuesday and says the hamstring he injured on the second day of training camp hasn't hurt for "a couple of weeks." The Bears' Pro Bowl middle linebacker is ready for week one. "I think my body's going to hold up fine," he told the Arlington Heights Daily Herald. "I've never had to deal with an injury, but I don't think it's going to be that big of a deal. I've worked out the rest of my body while I've been hurt, so I think it'll be fine."
Our View
Urlacher is still on a mission to win Defensive Player of the Year, and we're not about to disagree with him…not to his face anyway.

Jaguars: Rookies to start again
The News
Wide receiver Reggie Williams and linebacker Daryl Smith will each make their second straight start for the Jaguars, and coach Jack Del Rio indicated those jobs could soon become permanent.
Our View
Williams, the Jags' top pick, struggled early in camp but should be the starter ahead of Troy Edwards. Smith has been impressive and has leapt ahead of Greg Favors and Tommy Hendricks on the depth chart.

Cowboys: Bryant unlikely to unseat Cundiff
The News
Matt Bryant appeared to be on pace to unseat incumbent Billy Cundiff as the Cowboys' starting kicker throughout training camp until he suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out of the preseason game against the Giants on Monday. "It does affect things," Cowboys' head coach Bill Parcells told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Tuesday. "There isn't any doubt about it. He knows that. It's not great timing for him... If he doesn't kick Thursday (in a preseason game against the Chiefs), then I don't think I can afford to (keep him)." Bryant converted 11 of 14 field goal attempts for the Giants last season.
Our View
Cundiff converted both of his field goal attempts on Monday, but had a little luck on his side. On one of those attempts, Cundiff hit the ball awkwardly and somehow it wobbled through the uprights. Billy is clearly the frontrunner, but he'll need a solid performance on Thursday to win the job.

Titans: Hall out for Friday's game
The News
Defensive end Carlos Hall, expected to step up in place of Jevon Kearse this season, won't play in Friday night's preseason finale after suffering a sprained left ankle.
Our View
The good news is that while the ankle is still swollen, Hall does not have a high ankle sprain as team officials originally feared. He should be ready to go for the regular season opener September 12.

Lions: Jones probably won't play in final preseason game
The News
Lions' rookie running back Kevin Jones will probably miss the team's final preseason tune up this Thursday. Jones was excused from practice on Tuesday because of a death in the family and it's unknown when he will return to the team. He was nursing a sprained foot as well.
Our View
Jones should be good to go in week one against the Bears, but we'll keep on eye on the situation. He sprained his foot on August 26 and played two days later against the Ravens so it's not a serious injury.

Colts: Pyatt's prognosis better
The News
Wide receiver/kick returner Brad Pyatt won't play in the Colts' preseason finale, but the team is optimistic he'll recover from a deep thigh bruise in time to play in the regular season opener September 9 against the Patriots.
Our View
Pyatt was initially expected to miss up to six weeks, so this is great news for the Colts' special teams. Pyatt was the AFC's leading kickoff returner last season prior to suffering a season-ending neck injury in November.

Rams: No sign of Pace
The News
Rams' holdout left tackle Orlando Pace did not report for practice on Tuesday, as teammates suspected he might. Pace is holding out for a new contract, but Rams' officials cannot even negotiate with his agent until Pace signs a one-year contract tender that will pay him $7.02 million, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pace sat out most of training camp last year, as well as in 1997 and during his rookie season.
Our View
The Rams already lost projected starting offensive linemen Kyle Turley and Dave Wohlabaugh (who was later released) to season-ending injuries during the preseason, so perhaps Pace is doing the right thing by staying away. We remain confident that he will report to practice any day now, as his past holdouts have never extended into the regular season.

Texans: Payne expected to play
The News
Defensive tackle Seth Payne, still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the second game of last year, will make his preseason debut this week against the Buccaneers. Texans coach Dom Capers expects Payne to play 20-25 snaps.
Our View
The Texans finished near the bottom of the league defensively, primarily because Payne and fellow defensive lineman Gary Walker were hurt much of the season. If both players return healthy to line up alongside newly acquired Robaire Smith, the Texans defense will be greatly improved.

Chargers: Dwight will play
The News
After missing most of training camp and three preseason games with a hamstring injury, Chargers wide receiver Tim Dwight will play against the 49ers on Thursday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Bengals: Line banged up
The News
The Bengals were without the regular left side of their offensive line Tuesday, as both tackle Levi Jones and guard Eric Steinbach sat out practice for the second straight day.
Our View
Jones is resting a knee injury and has started all three preseason games, so no worries there. Steinbach had surgery July 28 to remove loose bodies from his elbow and tried to play Saturday against Atlanta but left after a few plays. The Bengals hope to have both regulars ready for the regular season opener.

49ers: Whiting deadline extended
The News
49ers were originally scheduled to decide on Wednesday whether to keep defensive end Brandon Whiting as part of the Terrell Owens trade or send him back to the Eagles for a third-round pick in next year's draft. However, both teams agreed to extend the deadline to September 5. If Whiting is able to pass a physical by that time, he will remain with the Niners, according to the Oakland Tribune. He is recovering from an April surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Our View
Niners' general manager Terry Donahue is obviously hopeful that Whiting will be able to pass the physical. Even if he were to pass, it sounds like it could be a while before Whiting is in good enough shape to actually play. Therefore, he has no value in leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Broncos: Putzier turning heads
The News
In the committee that is the Broncos' team of tight ends, third-year veteran Jeb Putzier leads the group with eight catches for 93 yards this preseason and continues to impress the coaching staff. "Jeb has had a great preseason," coach Mike Shanahan told the Denver Post. "He continues to improve and work hard."
Our View
The main criticism of Putzier's game is his blocking, which only means he'll be running routes whenever he's on the field. Because Jake Plummer and the Broncos' offense have relied on tight ends in the red zone, it's worth keeping an eye on who gets those looks in Denver.

Saints: Grant placed on injured reserve
The News
The Saints placed linebacker Cie Grant on injured reserve on Tuesday, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Grant was expected to compete for the starting middle linebacker job with rookie Courtney Watson, but has been sidelined by a left knee injury since August 2. An MRI revealed that Grant's patellar tendon would require surgery.
Our View
Grant missed most of last season with a right knee injury. Saints' head coach Jim Haslett had high hopes for Grant, but now is apparently forced to start a rookie in the middle this season.

Chiefs: Boerigter surgery scheduled again
The News
The Kansas City Star is reporting that wide receiver Marc Boerigter is scheduled to go under the knife on Wednesday to repair the knee he injured in last week's preseason game against the Browns.
Our View
The Chiefs are reserving the decision on whether to put him on injured reserve until surgery reveals how much damage he suffered, but we're not optimistic about seeing him in uniform anytime soon.

Raiders: Trade clears up backfield
The News
Running back Troy Hambrick didn't figure into the Raiders' running back plans, but the depth chart cleared up in the wake of yesterday's trade with the Cardinals. Veteran Tyrone Wheatley is the starter, and second-year runner Justin Fargas is his primary backup. Amos Zereoue will serve as the third-down back and No. 3 on the depth chart.
Our View
Wheatley has run well this preseason and has even shown surprising burst running downhill in Norv Turner's power rushing attack. We would feel comfortable leaving drafts with Ty as a No. 3 back, but don't forget to handcuff the speedy Fargas to him in later rounds.

Vikings: Robinson still uncertain for week one
The News
As reported earlier, Vikings' wide receiver Marcus Robinson should be ready to return from his strained left hamstring to practice on Saturday. Head coach Mike Tice says he needs to get back or else he won't play in week one. "He needs to be able to practice Saturday and Monday to even have a chance to play against Dallas," Tice told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Our offense is too complicated for him to jump in next Wednesday and expect to play."
Our View
Even if Robinson does practice and play, you can't expect much from him against the Cowboys in week one given that he has missed so much time this preseason and is new to the offense. Leave him on the bench.

Raiders: OG Collins out for season
The News
The Raiders placed guard Mo Collins on injured reserve on Tuesday, declaring him out for the season with a recurring knee injury, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Our View
The Raiders weren't exactly counting on Mo to be around, and their offensive line unit remains deep and talented. The loss of Collins could also push rookie Robert Gallery further toward contributing inside rather than at tackle.

Browns: Thompson returns to practice
The News
Linebacker Chaun Thompson, out since fracturing his left wrist August 1, returned to practice Tuesday. He expects to play in Friday's preseason finale against the Bears.

Buccaneers: Bates, Garrett among players released
The News
The Buccaneers released 13 players on Tuesday, most notably wide receiver D'Wayne Bates and quarterback Jason Garrett. The other released players were defensive tackle DeVone Claybrooks, kicker Nick Setta, cornerbacks Lenny Williams and Lynaris Elpheage, linebacker Edward Thomas, long snapper John Garrison, safety Scott Frost, fullback Casey Cramer, defensive end Reinard Wilson, and tight ends Nate Lawrie and Doug Zeigler.
Our View
Bates' stock has fallen faster than actor Josh Hartnett's. D'Wayne went from starting opposite Randy Moss in Minnesota last year to failing to make the cut on wideout corps that includes Bill Schroeder and Mark Jones. About the only nice thing we can say about Bates is that he didn't make the mistake of hitching his wagon to Hollywood Homicide.

Panthers: Hayes among released players
The News
The Panthers waived wide receiver Donald Hayes after reaching an injury settlement with him on Tuesday, according to the Charlotte Observer. The team also released wide receiver Walter Young, tight end James Hugo, and defensive tackle Rod Walker. In another move, the team placed safety Damien Richardson on injured reserve.
Our View
Hayes has been a flop ever since he left the Panthers via free agency after the 2001 season, so it's no surprise that he didn't make the team this year.

Lions: Joyce undergoes elbow surgery
The News
Lions' offensive lineman Matt Joyce underwent elbow surgery on Tuesday and will be sidelined two-to-four weeks.

Joyce is the Lions' utility lineman, playing all four guard and tackle spots so his loss weakens their depth. It should not have a significant fantasy impact, though.

Dolphins: Ahanotu to sign
The News
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that defensive end Chidi Ahanotu will be signed by the Dolphins to provide depth after the trade of Adewale Ogunleye. Ahanotu played last year for the 49ers, where he had four sacks and 27 tackles.
Our View
Ahanotu is being brought in strictly to provide depth behind starter David Bowens and Jay Williams, who both moved up a spot on the depth chart after the trade of Ogunleye. Don't count on Ahanotu to register enough playing time to be worthy of a roster spot on your individual defensive player fantasy squad.

Packers: Green sits out practice
The News
Ahman Green did not practice Tuesday and his status for Friday's preseason finale is up in the air. Green left last Friday's preseason game against the Jaguars with a bruised left kneecap.
Our View
Green will be fine for week one, but we expect him to be held out of this week's meaningless preseason game as a precaution.

Dolphins: Fiedler to start Friday
The News
Coach Dave Wannstedt still won't say who is going to win the quarterback job in Miami, but he did say Jay Fiedler will start the Dolphins' preseason finale on Friday against the Saints. Fiedler is expected to play one or two series and A.J. Feeley will take over for the rest of the first half.
Our View
We're not sure if it's worse that Wannstedt won't name his starter or that there may be fantasy owners out there who care who wins this battle. You shouldn't. Whoever it is won't be worthy of a spot on fantasy rosters. If you must know, reports out of Miami on Tuesday indicated that Feeley has the inside track for the starting job, which flies in the face of the announcement that Fiedler will start on Friday.

Vikings: Elling out, Conway in
The News
The Vikings released kicker Aaron Elling late Tuesday and signed Brett Conway to a two-year deal. "He's got a background of kicking in this league," head coach Mike Tice told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "That's what we like, so that's the direction we're going to go. He's obviously a talent. Green Bay thought enough of him to make him a third-round draft pick. He's bounced around a little bit, but for kickers that's not a bad thing." Elling missed two field goals and an extra point attempt during the Vikings' preseason game last Friday against the 49ers and continued to miss kicks during practice this week. "I had to make a move," Tice said. "I love Aaron. He just didn't do his job. That's the bottom line in this business. He understands that."
Our View
Conway has a strong leg, but is not the most accurate kicker around. That being said, Elling is a train wreck right now so anything is better. Given the Vikings' high-scoring offense, Conway could be a nice sleeper kicker.

Titans: LaBoy out another week
The News
A concussion expert advised Titans rookie defensive end Travis LaBoy to sit out another week of practice before returning to the field. LaBoy met with Dr. Joseph Maroon, neurosurgeon for the Steelers, in Pittsburgh Wednesday. He suffered a concussion two weeks ago and has been plagued by headaches ever since.
Our View
The Titans are hoping LaBoy can return healthy and provide a pass-rushing spark. He has missed all three preseason games thus far and won't play Friday against the Packers, either.

Raiders: Treu to start over Grove
The News
The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that veteran Adam Treu will get the start at center on opening day against the Steelers over rookie Jake Grove. Head coach Norv Turner did qualify the decision by saying that he expected Grove to challenge for the job throughout the season.
Our View
The decision is fueling speculation that the Raiders will then install No. 2 overall pick Robert Gallery at left guard. The thinking is that Turner doesn't want two rookies starting next to each other on the offensive line and that Treu would be able to help Gallery adjust early.

Titans: Adibi claimed
The News
The Titans claimed defensive end Nathaniel Adibi, released earlier in the week by the Steelers. Adibi was a fifth round draft pick out of Virginia Tech who was being switched from defensive end to linebacker in the Steelers' 3-4 scheme.
Our View
Adibi will be returned to rush end, which is what he did best in college. The Titans are still seeking someone to step up and pressure the quarterback from the outside after losing Jevon Kearse and Robaire Smith to free agency in the offseason.

Titans: Rolle could play
The News
Cornerback Samari Rolle, who has yet to play this preseason because of swelling in his right ankle, visited Dr. Robert Anderson Wednesday. Anderson is the orthopedist for the Panthers. "He has something in there that is bothering him a little bit, but it would not limit him from playing to his potential," Titans coach Jeff Fisher told the Tennessean. "Samari could play."
Our View
Rolle has practiced recently and is expected to get his first preseason action Friday against the Packers.

Bears: Shea praises Thomas
The News
Bears' backup running back Anthony Thomas has been sidelined most of the preseason by a strained oblique, but offensive coordinator Terry Shea continues to have nothing but praise for him. "I saw some things when [Thomas] was healthy in the early part of training camp that made me totally appreciate the fact that we have ourselves a very special back in what he does, and now that gives us a great 1-2 punch," Shea told the Chicago Tribune. "I will fight to my last day to keep that 1-2 punch in the backfield."
Our View
Shea's talk of a "1-2 punch" is a little worrisome in that it sounds vaguely like a committee. We'll believe it when we see it. Thomas has been hurt all summer and Jones has looked good.

Texans: Defensive line still not intact
The News
Defensive tackle Seth Payne will make his preseason debut Thursday against the Buccaneers, but end Gary Walker will miss his second consecutive game with a groin injury. "Everybody will be there on opening day," Walker told the Houston Chronicle. "That's the really important thing."
Our View
The Texans' defensive front was decimated with injuries last year, and the results (31st against the run, 31st against the pass) were abysmal. However, with Payne and Walker healthy and joining free agent acquisition Robaire Smith, the Texans' defense will be significantly improved over last year's model.

Colts: Manning's backups get final audition
The News
Peyton Manning and the Colts' No. 1 offense will play one series in Friday's preseason finale. After that, Cory Sauter and Joe Hamilton will state their respective cases to be Peyton's backup—unless Hamilton's rib injury keeps him on the sidelines.
Our View
Both Sauter and Hamilton are expected to make the team, with Jim Sorgi landing a spot on the practice squad. And seeing how Manning has missed one snap to injury since entering the league, the battle for No. 2 lacks significant fantasy relevance.

Chiefs: Tynes to kick vs. Dallas
The News
With one preseason game left on Thursday against the Cowboys, the Chiefs will use Lawrence Tynes as their placekicker in what amounts to his last chance to unseat Morten Andersen for the job.
Our View
Tynes is going to need several chances, several makes, and a few touchbacks to beat out a veteran that head coach Dick Vermeil feels very comfortable with.

September 2, 2004 3:19 PM ET
Jaguars: Pass rush still a concern
The News
The Jaguars released Tony Brackens and Hugh Douglas, and rookie Jorge Cordova is on injured reserve. With the top three hopes for bolstering their pass rush unavailable, the Jags will give a handful of players a long look during their final preseason game. Brandon Green, Lionel Barnes, Bobby McCray, and Courtland Bullard will all see significant action in the game against the Patriots.
Our View
Paul Spicer is set at left end, but he may sit this one out, with Rob Meier sliding over from right end to take his place. The Jags will also work linebacker Akin Ayodele into the pass-rush mix as well once the real games begin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 2, 2004 3:11 PM ET
Titans: Quarterbacks to get a look
The News
Three recently released quarterbacks will get a look from the Titans as they attempt to upgrade their No. 3 quarterback. Veteran Doug Johnson, who filled in for Michael Vick last season and was recently cut by Jacksonville; David Rivers, just cut by the Falcons; and Casey Clausen, who played at the University of Tennessee and was released by the Chiefs, will all work out for the Titans in the next few days.
Our View
Gesser will have a chance to save his job in Friday's preseason game against Green Bay, but the Titans like Johnson's experience. Clausen and Rivers are candidates for a practice squad spot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 2, 2004 2:45 PM ET
Bears: Jones won't play Friday
The News
Bears' running back Thomas Jones will be held out of Friday's final preseason game to avoid a freak injury in a meaningless game.
Our View
Jones is healthy. Head coach Lovie Smith just doesn't want to take any unnecessary risks with his starting running back.

September 2, 2004 2:29 PM ET
Packers: Couch might get first team snaps in finale
The News
Packers' quarterback Tim Couch has recovered sufficiently from his sore throwing arm and will play against the Titans on Friday night in the final exhibition game. He might even get a chance to play with the first team for a series or two. Brett Favre will play the first half and Doug Pederson, having wrapped up the backup gig, might not play at all. "Whether it's (with) the ones, twos, threes, it doesn't matter," offensive coordinator Tom Rossley told the Green Bay Press Gazette. "We just need to get him out there to play."
Our View
If Couch performs poorly, there's a chance he could get cut. He hasn't had time to really pick up the Packers' offense since his arm has bothered him for a few weeks.

Chiefs: Starting safeties to play Thursday
The News
For the first time this preseason, the Chiefs should have their starting safeties in place on Thursday against the Cowboys. The Kansas City Star is reporting that Jerome Woods (hamstring) and Greg Wesley (ankle) will play together for the first time this season after returning to practice this week.
Our View
Both Woods (two interceptions for touchdowns in 2003) and Wesley (12 interceptions over the last two seasons) have IDP potential, especially with a more aggressive defense on tap under Gunther Cunningham.

Chargers: QB battle takes center stage
The News
The North County Times is reporting that veteran Drew Brees will start and play into the second quarter on Thursday against the 49ers, and that rookie Philip Rivers will relieve him and play the balance of the game. According to the Times, head coach Marty Schottenheimer is expected to announce his week-one starter early next week.
Our View
The rookie missed 29 practices and two preseason games, and threw two picks in his NFL debut last week, yet it appears that all he has to do to win the starting job is play well tonight against the second- and third-teamers from a bad 49ers team. We'll let you know how the game shakes out.

Raiders: Quarterback situation remains the same
The News
With only one preseason game left, there is no apparent change imminent in the Raiders' quarterback depth chart. For the preseason, starter Rich Gannon is 24-of-42 for 250 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. Backup Kerry Collins is nine-of-20 for 256 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. The Oakland Tribune is reporting that both players will see about 10 to 12 snaps in the preseason finale on Thursday against the Rams.
Our View
The glaring difference between the two quarterback is the touchdown total. Collins has thrown three long scoring passes, but coach Norv Turner has essentially chalked that up to the fact that he has faced the opponents' backups. We have to admit, we really hope Collins—a starter for his entire career—would have success against second-string defenses.

Redskins: Barrow might miss week one
The News
Redskins' starting middle linebacker Mike Barrow will miss the final preseason game against the Falcons on Friday, and he may also miss week one of the regular season with a knee injury. Barrow has been sidelined for three weeks because of the injury and has been unable to play during the preseason. On Wednesday, Barrow told the Washington Post that he would not be able to play Friday even if it were a regular season game.
Our View
Barrow is a top-15 linebacker in leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Chiefs: Boerigter placed on IR
The News
Wide receiver Marc Boerigter had surgery on his injured knee on Wednesday and was placed on injured reserve shortly thereafter, according to the Kansas City Star. He will not play for the Chiefs this season.
Our View
Unless Johnnie Morton (Achilles' tendon) makes a miraculous recovery, the Chiefs are going to have to mix things up on offense. Wide receivers Dante Hall and Richard Smith, as well as tight end Kris Wilson, are possible candidates for a larger role. Stay tuned.

Eagles: Detmer still No. 2
The News
Eagles' head coach Andy Reid reiterated Tuesday that Koy Detmer is still the Eagles' No. 2 quarterback behind Donovan McNabb. Reid made that clear before signing veteran signal caller Jeff Blake to assume the No. 3 role. "It doesn't matter to me," Blake told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I just have to be ready to play when they tell me to." Blake completed 20 of 29 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown during three preseason games.
Our View
Reid has said from the beginning that Detmer would be the No. 2 quarterback, but media speculation following Detmer's minor knee surgery in early August led the coach to say it again on Wednesday. Koy is expected to start the final preseason game against the Jets on Friday.

Chiefs: Beisel to start in the middle
The News
Due to injuries to middle linebackers Mike Maslowski (knee) and Kawika Mitchell (ankle), reserve linebacker Monty Beisel will get the start on Thursday against the Cowboys in what amounts to an audition for the starting job in the season opener.
Our View
Beisel is a bit undersized for a middle linebacker, but it's his inexperience at the position that is of greater concern. It should be interesting to see how the Chiefs handle the run tonight.

Cowboys: Romo has edge over Henson
The News
Cowboys' head coach Bill Parcells has not decided whether Tony Romo or Drew Henson will serve as the primary backup to starting quarterback Vinny Testaverde, but he's leaning toward the former. "Tony might have a little advantage on game management right this minute," Parcells told the Dallas Morning News on Wednesday. "Drew, with more work and more experience, is coming along pretty fast for a guy that hadn't played in a while."
Our View
Henson has been the No. 2 quarterback in all three preseason games, but that's probably because Parcells wants to get him as much work as possible during the preseason. He did not play football last season because he was playing minor league baseball for the Yankees.

Cardinals: Cason and Smith claimed off waivers
The News
The Cardinals claimed former running back Aveion Cason and defensive tackle Shaun Smith off waivers on Wednesday, according to the Arizona Republic. The Cowboys cut both players on Tuesday. Cason played in 10 games for the Cowboys last season and rushed 40 times for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Smith was a member of the Cowboys' practice squad last year.
Our View
What's up with the Cowboys' backfield reunion that's taking place in Arizona? First the Cards signed Emmitt Smith last year, then they added Troy Hambrick in a trade on Tuesday, and now they've added Cason to the mix. At this rate, we won't be surprised if Cards' head coach Dennis Green asks Tony Dorsett to come out of retirement.

Broncos: Starters won't see action vs. Cards
The News
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that the Broncos will not use their first-team offense against the Cardinals in their fifth and final preseason game on Thursday. Backup quarterback Danny Kanell will start in place of starter Jake Plummer, and second-year tackle George Foster is the only first-teamer expected to see the field.
Our View
This likely means we're going to see a lot of rookie running back Tatum Bell, and this is his best chance to make a statement about what he brings to the table.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 2, 2004 12:31 PM ET
Cardinals: Shipp placed on injured reserve
The News
The Cardinals placed running back Marcel Shipp on injured reserve on Wednesday, thus ending his season. Shipp has been sidelined since he dislocated his left ankle and broke his fibula in early August. The Cards were hopeful that he would be able to return late this season, but team officials have apparently determined that such a projection is not realistic.
Our View
Shipp entered minicamp as the starter only to be quickly demoted to No. 2 back behind Emmitt Smith by Cards' head coach Dennis Green. We always saw the move as a motivational ploy by Green, but now we'll never know whether Green intended to give the job back to Shipp before week one.

49ers: Jackson might be playing for his job
The News
49ers' backup running back Terry Jackson might need a strong performance in Thursday's preseason game against the Chargers to save his job. It's not that the 28 year-old running back hasn't performed well during the preseason, but rather that the Niners are being salary cap conscious, which means Jackson's $535,000 salary (the highest among the team's backup rushers) could work against him. Jackson is competing with Jamal Robertson and Maurice Hicks for the two backup running back jobs behind starter Kevan Barlow.
Our View
Jackson is a strong special teams player and would likely be signed by another team if the Niners choose to release him.

Seahawks: Tubbs out with strained hamstring
The News
Seahawks' defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs will miss the preseason game against the Vikings on Thursday due to a strained hamstring. The first-round draft pick has rested the injury throughout the week and is expected to recover in time to play in week one against the Saints.
Our View
Tubbs will start at defensive tackle as a rookie and is considered a strong run stopper. However, he is not ranked among the top 50 linemen in leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

September 2, 2004 11:48 AM ET
49ers: Sopoaga placed on injured reserve
The News
The 49ers placed defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga on injured reserve on Wednesday. The fourth-round draft pick suffered a back injury early in training camp, and Niners' general manager Terry Donahue told the Mercury News that it will take the rookie at least 10 weeks to recover. Because he has been placed on injured reserve, Sopoaga is ineligible to play this season.
Our View
Sopoaga wasn't going to receive much playing time behind starters Anthony Adams and Bryant Young, so this move essentially saves a roster spot for the Niners.

Panthers: Morgan sidelined with groin injury
The News
Panthers' linebacker Dan Morgan will sit out of the preseason game against the Steelers on Thursday. Morgan is nursing a groin injury and is sitting out of the game as a precautionary measure, according to the Rock Hill Herald. The starting middle linebacker is expected to play week one against the Packers.
Our View
Morgan is a top-10 linebacker in leagues that award points for individual defense players.

Buccaneers: Gramatica probably staying put
The News
Despite rumors that Buccaneers' officials were considering the idea of replacing Martin Gramatica, team officials say they have no plans of cutting the struggling kicker. "Who are you going to get?" Buccaneers' general manager Bruce Allen rhetorically asked a Tampa Tribune reporter on Wednesday. Bucs' head coach Jon Gruden continues to say that Gramatica looks good in practice and simply needs to "get his stroke back" during games.
Our View
Allen is right about the ugly list of possible replacements. Morten Andersen, Matt Bryant, and Billy Cundiff are possible candidates to be released by their teams, but none would be an upgrade over Gramatica. Hey, we hear Aaron Elling is available. No? Didn't think so.

Panthers: Peete and Weinke still battling over backup role
The News
The battle between Rodney Peete and Chris Weinke over the Panthers' No. 2 quarterback job will likely be determined in the preseason game against the Steelers on Thursday. Both quarterbacks are expected to see significant playing time, as starter Jake Delhomme probably won't play beyond the first quarter, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Our View
Weinke has been the better quarterback during the preseason games. In two games, Weinke completed 12 of 23 pass attempts for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, in three games, Peete has completed 12 of 23 pass attempts for 146 yards, a touchdown, and one interception. We're still holding out hope for Rodney if for no other reason than we want to see more camera shots of his actress wife (Holly Robinson Peete) during the games.

Falcons: Layne released, others signed
The News
The Falcons made four roster moves on Tuesday, most notably releasing backup fullback George Layne. Defensive end Raymond House was also released, while cornerback Brandon Williams was re-signed just two days after being released, and defensive end Joe Tafoya was also signed. Tafoya was released by the Cardinals earlier this week and will now compete for the roster spot last held by House.
Our View
No major surprises here. Williams was probably re-signed due to the injury suffered by starting cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

Jets: Jordan to start Saturday
The News
LaMont Jordan told the New York Daily News he will start Saturday's preseason finale against the Eagles. He has been playing with the third team so far this preseason, and has been entering the game after starter Curtis Martin and the surprising Johnathan Reese. "I was told I'm going to start," Jordan told the Daily News.
Our View
Jordan has landed in coach Herm Edwards' doghouse this preseason by reporting to camp out of shape and with lackluster running and terrible blocking. In last Friday's game, he ran for just 29 yards on 11 carries against a third-string Giants' defense, including a fumble on his own 11-yard line, and whiffing on a block that cost the Jets a sack. Jordan must block much better if he expects to take any regular season carries away from Martin.

Patriots: Cap could create casualties
The News
The Patriots need to shave between $500,000 and $1.5 million from their salary cap before Sunday at 4:00 p.m., and the Boston Herald is reporting some of the team's veterans may not be safe on cut-down day. The Patriots restructured running back Corey Dillon's contract on Wednesday from $1.7 million to $660,000, likely spreading out the cap savings by guaranteeing his contract. According to Herald sources, "it will be evident" some of the cuts were made purely for salary cap reasons this weekend.
Our View
The report indicated that veterans such as Ty Law, who is counting $10.2 million towards the cap this year and has had run-ins with Patriots' management this offseason, linebacker Ted Johnson, and receiver David Patten are not assured spots on the roster because of prohibitive cap figures. While we seriously doubt the Pats would do anything as drastic as to waive or trade Law by Sunday, they set a precedent by waiving star defensive back Lawyer Milloy last preseason when they were in a very similar predicament.

Falcons: Vick blanked by Redskins
The News
The Redskins pounded Michael Vick and the Falcons 27-0 in the preseason finale for the two teams Friday night. Vick was in the game for three series, but took only five snaps. He turned the ball over twice to the blitzing Redskins defense and the Falcons managed a meager minus-9 yards while he was on the field.
Our View
Other teams might take a cue from the way the Redskins aggressively went after Vick and the Falcons in their new West Coast offense. The early season could be especially ugly while they get the kinks ironed out.

Bengals: Perry injures hamstring
The News
Bengals' rookie running back Chris Perry left Friday night's preseason game against the Colts in the second half with a pulled hamstring. He had 14 carries for 63 yards before getting hurt.
Our View
We won't know Perry's status for week one for a few days, but he should spend most of the game on the sideline (watching Rudi Johnson run the rock) even if he is healthy. He only makes a worthwhile draft pick if you have the luxury of stashing him in reserve on a deep fantasy bench.

September 4, 2004 12:10 AM ET
Jaguars: Christie released
The News
The Jaguars will likely enter the season with rookie Josh Scobee as their kicker. The team released veteran Steve Christie on Friday just eight days after signing him.
Our View
Scobee was shaky during training camp, but nailed all four of his field goal attempts in the Jags' last two preseason games. His job security is tenuous, as the Jaguars will probably be combing the waiver wire for another option.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

September 4, 2004 12:02 AM ET
Steelers: Kittner cut again
The News
It's not been a great offseason for Kurt Kittner. The Steelers became the fifth team to release the quarterback in seven months on Friday. Kittner was released by the Falcons in January, then went to the Bengals and was released within four weeks. He also made stops with the Giants and Patriots in the last few months.
Our View
Kittner didn't get a chance in Pittsburgh. They signed him on August 14 and he didn't get in any preseason games, not even for one play. The Steelers will roll into the season with rookie Ben Roethlisberger and Brian St. Pierre backing up starter Tommy Maddox.

Patriots: Miller re-signed, Kingsbury released
The News
The Patriots signed veteran quarterback Jim Miller on Friday just four days after releasing him. Second-year quarterback Kliff Kingsbury was released.
Our View
Rohan Davey was retained as a backup to Tom Brady, but Miller provides a more experienced, albeit fragile, option. Davey threw two interceptions and lost a fumble during the Patriots' preseason finale on Thursday.

Cowboys: Woodson placed on PUP list
The News
The Cowboys placed starting safety Darren Woodson on the Physically Unable to Perform list on Friday, meaning he will miss the first five games of the season. Woodson underwent surgery in July to have a herniated disc removed from his back. "It's not an easy decision, but I know it is in his best interest," head coach Bill Parcells told the Associated Press. "It's just getting his muscles back strength-wise. It's not quite firing exactly the way you need to play football."
Our View
Dallas is going to sorely miss their all-time leading tackler, especially in their week one matchup against the Vikings. The secondary gets thin pretty quickly after Roy Williams and Terence Newman.

Raiders: Anderson acquired from Packers
The News
The Raiders acquired safety Marques Anderson from the Packers on Friday in exchange for two 2005 draft picks. The Associated Press reports the Packers will get fifth- and sixth-round picks in next year's draft. Anderson had lost the starting job to Mark Roman in Green Bay, meanwhile the Raiders needed to find a replacement for strong safety Derrick Gibson, who dislocated his right shoulder during their preseason game on Thursday.
Our View
Look for Anderson to step in and get playing time right away in Oaktown. He should get the starting gig opposite Ray Buchanon as soon as he gets up to speed on their defense.

September 3, 2004 10:13 PM ET
Chiefs: Tynes sticks a fork in Andersen
The News
The Chiefs cut 44-year-old kicker Morten Andersen on Friday. The number two all-time scoring leader was beat out by Lawrence Tynes, a kicker with experience in the CFL and a much longer leg than Andersen's. Tynes buried a number of long range kicks throughout the preseason. Should Tynes prove shaky, the team has already indicated that they'll bring back Anderson.
Our View
Sleeper alert! Points should abound as Tynes gets to kick behind one of the NFL's elite offenses. And we're not that worried about his lack of NFL experience. If you recall, Mike Vanderjagt gained valuable experience in the CFL, and made an immediate impact in his first year with the Colts. Tynes also has a much better leg than Andersen, and should have no trouble with the longer field goals that Andersen couldn't reach.

Raiders: Starting safety lost
The News
Starting safety Derrick Gibson dislocated his right shoulder in the first quarter of Thursday's preseason game against the Rams and is doubtful for the season opener, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Our View
Backup defensive back Ike Charlton replaced Gibson on Thursday and is a possibility to start against Pittsburgh in week one. Charlton has been a cornerback for most of his career, but has limited experience at safety.

Chargers: Dwight scratched
The News
Wide receiver Tim Dwight was a late scratch for Thursday's preseason game against San Francisco, pulling out of the contest due to tightness in his hamstring during pre-game warm-ups, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Kassim Osgood started in Dwight's place but did not catch a pass.
Our View
The fact that the Chargers are listing Dwight as a starter on their depth chart is laughable. We recommend that you stay away from this receiving corps completely.

September 3, 2004 5:52 PM ET
Raiders: Buchanon rests
The News
Starting cornerback Phillip Buchanon did not suit up for the Raiders' final preseason game due to soreness behind his knee, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Our View
This doesn't appear to be anything to worry about. Buchanon remains one of our favorite cornerbacks for IDP purposes due to his aggressive nature, the team's new defensive philosophy, and Charles Woodson's presence on the other side of the field.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chiefs: Tynes perfect in audition
The News
Kicker Lawrence Tynes was attempting to steal Morten Andersen's job on Thursday against the Cowboys, and he was perfect on two attempts from 46 and 27 yards. "Tynes kicked off well, kicked field goals," coach Dick Vermeil told the team's official website. "[The long one] would have been good from 55."
Our View
We doubt this was enough for Vermeil to kick his experienced veteran to the curb, but we'll let you know when the decision comes down.

Bears: Peterson and Forsey neck and neck
The News
Bears' running backs Adrian Peterson and Brock Forsey will split the carries during Friday night's preseason finale against the Browns. The two have been battling all summer for the third spot on the depth chart behind starter Thomas Jones and backup Anthony Thomas. Jones is being held out of the exhibition game to avoid any needless injury while Thomas will miss the game because of a strained oblique that has sidelined him since the first few days of camp.
Our View
The winner of the Forsey and Peterson battle won't make any week one fantasy rosters, but could be closer to getting playing time than you might think given Thomas' injury.

Vikings: Smith might play in week one
The News
It looks like Vikings' backup running back Onterrio Smith will be able to play in their week one game against the Cowboys, though nothing is official. The St. Paul Pioneer Press cites a person with knowledge of the situation as saying Smith definitely will be available because the NFL is not expected to rule on his appeal of a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy until after their week-one game.
Our View
If the report turns out to be true, Smith would probably get the start at running back over Moe Williams. Regular starter Michael Bennett will miss the game with a sprained knee. We should hear something more definitive on the situation soon, so don't set those week-one lineups in stone just yet…not that starting any Viking running back against the Dallas defense is a good idea anyway.

Broncos: Madise breaks hand
The News
Backup wide receiver Adrian Madise broke his hand against the Cardinals on Thursday, and the Broncos may place the second-year wideout on injured reserve, the Rocky Mountain News reports.
Our View
Madise was fighting for a roster spot. The fact that he will miss four-to-six weeks doesn't help his cause at all.

Raiders: Fargas scores again
The News
Second-year running back Justin Fargas capped off a strong preseason by scoring in his third straight exhibition game. He was the beneficiary of a Rich Gannon improvisation, as the veteran quarterback scrambled out of pressure to find Fargas in the back of the end zone from five yards out.
Our View
In four preseason games, Fargas totaled 98 yards on 19 carries (5.2 average) and has firmly established himself as Tyrone Wheatley's primary backup. In Norv Turner's power rushing game, Wheatley has made himself a strong No. 3 fantasy back, but his age make it imperative to grab Fargas as insurance later on in the draft.

Ravens: Defense ready for prime time and Prime Time
The News
Despite newly signed nickel back Deion Sanders sitting out the final preseason game, the Ravens defense showed it is ready for the regular games to begin. Cornerback Chris McAlister, who ended his holdout earlier in the week, returned an interception 23 yards for a score in Thursday night's game against the Giants. For the preseason, the Ravens' first defensive unit scored three touchdowns and allowed only one—and that was without McAlister for three games and Sanders for four.
Our View
Sure, defenses are a throwaway pick at the end of your fantasy draft, but you may want to pound a round earlier than usual to nab the Ravens. They returned four interceptions and two blocked kicks for scores last year, and with Sanders on board should easily match or even exceed that total this season.

Chiefs: Green caps off solid preseason
The News
After missing most of practice this week with a sore elbow, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green played into the second quarter against the Cowboys on Thursday and completed seven-of-nine passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. For the preseason, Green was 36-of-54 for 544 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
Our View
Green looks an awful lot like the guy who threw for 4,039 yards last year and 50 touchdowns over the last two seasons. If you're one to wait on quarterbacks on draft day, he could be a great late-round selection.

Titans: Rolle will play
The News
Cornerback Samari Rolle received good news from the specialist he saw regarding his sore right ankle and will play in Friday's preseason finale against the Packers. This will be Rolle's first game action of the exhibition schedule.
Our View
The Titans have said all along that, were this the regular season, Rolle would have been able to play. After getting the go-ahead from the doctor, he'll have a chance to shake off some of the rust during the preseason and get ready for the real games.

Broncos: Walls shakes off the rust
The News
Broncos cornerback Lenny Walls (ankle) made his first preseason appearance on Thursday against the Cardinals and appeared to be ready for the preseason opener. He made four tackles, forced a fumble, and nearly caught an interception.
Our View
Walls is expected to start opposite Champ Bailey, which means he is in line to see a lot of action and opportunities on his side of the field.

Lions: Bryant hurts shoulder
The News
Lions' cornerback Fernando Bryant injured his shoulder in the first quarter of their final preseason game on Thursday against the Bills. The initial diagnosis is a stinger. "Bryant wanted to go back in the game," head coach Steve Mariucci told the Detroit News.
Our View
It looks like the Lions dodged a bullet. Bryant and Brock Marion—half the starting secondary—both left the game with injuries, however neither appears to be serious right now.

Chargers: Turner goes off
The News
Backup running back Michael Turner registered 116 yards and a touchdown on 24 rushing attempts on Thursday against the 49ers. The rookie had an opportunity to carry the load with franchise running back LaDainian Tomlinson resting up for the regular season.
Our View
Jesse Chatman also ran well early, collecting 65 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Chatman appears to be the appropriate handcuff for L.T., but if Tomlinson was injured, we doubt that Jesse would be useful given the sorry state of the Chargers' offense.

Chargers: Brees gets leg up on Rivers
The News
By completing all five of his pass attempts and leading the Chargers on two touchdown drives in as many chances, veteran quarterback Drew Brees earned the inside track over rookie Philip Rivers on Thursday in the battle for the starting job. Rivers did not see time with the first team and threw an interception in his second series, but rebounded to throw for 85 yards and a touchdown on 11-of-13 passing.
Our View
Brees recorded 71 passing yards and a touchdown, giving him a preseason total of 432 yards on 31-of-45 passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. The fact that Rivers did not play at all with the first-string is fueling speculation in the San Diego Union-Tribune that Marty Schottenheimer will anoint Brees the week-one starter early next week. No matter the outcome, fantasy owners should stay away.

Lions: Jones sits out
The News
Lions' rookie running back Kevin Jones did not play in Thursday's final preseason game. He arrived in time, according to the Detroit News, but the decision was made to have him sit out because he had missed a few days of practice to be with his family after the death of a relative. Jones has also been nursing a minor foot sprain.
Our View
Jones looked solid in his limited preseason action, rushing 13 times for 65 yards. He should be good to go for week one against the Bears.

Texans: Hollings suffers thigh bruise
The News
Running back Tony Hollings sustained a thigh bruise late in the second quarter of Thursday's preseason finale. He left the game and did not return.
Our View
The injury didn't appear to be serious, and Hollings has more than a week to recover and get ready to assume his duties as Domanick Davis' backup.

Vikings: Agunlo injures knee
The News
Vikings' tight end Richard Agunlo sprained his left knee during the third quarter of their preseason finale on Thursday against the Seahawks. "There might be a change in our thought at tight end based on the Angulo sprain," head coach Mike Tice told the St. Paul Pioneer Press following the game.
Our View
Agunlo was projected as the third tight end, but his injury might open the door for rookie Richard Owens to make the team.

Colts: Carthon will get a chance to run
The News
Undrafted free agent running back Ran Carthon will get plenty of chances to state his case for a roster spot in Friday's preseason finale. The Colts will keep starter Edgerrin James out of action, and injuries will sideline top backups Dominic Rhodes and James Mungro.
Our View
Carthon is Indy's second leading rusher this preseason and stands a very good chance of making the club as a backup.

Ravens: Boller wraps up solid preseason
The News
Quarterback Kyle Boller finished off a strong preseason showing by going six-for-seven for 84 yards and a touchdown Thursday night, recording a passer rating of 156. For the exhibition season, Boller was 30-for-50 for 330 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Our View
Boller has taken well to the tutelage of Jim Fassel. With defenses stacked at the line to stop Jamal Lewis, Boller could surprise some folks downfield. That's good news for Todd Heap and Kevin Johnson and eventually Lewis, since a little passing success will force defenses to back off the line and defend the pass.

Jaguars: Scobee secures job
The News
Josh Scobee secured his spot as the Jaguars' kicker by drilling a 51-yard field goal in the second quarter. The kick was wiped out by a holding penalty, but it was enough to save his job for now. Scobee also made a 31-yarder in the third quarter.
Our View
Scobee has made four in a row after missing three of his first four field goal attempts this preseason. The Jags had brought in veteran Steve Christie as a backup plan, but right now it appears Scobee will keep the job.

Patriots: Receiver situation still hazy
The News
None of the Patriots' top four receivers played during Thursday's preseason finale, and we are no closer to knowing which will emerge as fantasy weapons this season. Troy Brown suited up and did light work during pregame warm-ups, while David Givens ran well during warm-ups and appeared unaffected by a minor leg injury that kept him out of the two previous games. The Boston Globe is reporting that the Patriots' starting receivers will be Deion Branch and David Patten.
Our View
Patten is coming back from a severe injury that kept him out most of last year, but for now he may have taken David Givens' spot in the starting lineup. We still expect Givens to regain that spot based on the rapport he developed with quarterback Tom Brady towards the end of last year. Givens remains the top threat in the red zone, and Branch looks to be on the verge of a breakout season, yardage-wise. It will likely be a guessing game all year long as to which of Brady's receivers will receive the most looks on a week-to-week basis.

Titans: Schifino likely out again
The News
Jake Schifino continues to be plagued by hamstring tightness, and Titans coach Jeff Fisher said it was unlikely the wide receiver would play in Friday's preseason finale against the Packers.
Our View
The Titans are growing increasingly frustrated with Schifino's chronic hamstring problems. Eddie Berlin has moved ahead of Schifino on the depth charts.

Eagles: Owens out with abdominal strain

Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens won't play on Friday night due to a lower abdominal strain, the team's official web site reported. The injury is not serious.
