PHOENIX (AP) - Francisco Campos, who pitched for Mexico in the recent Caribbean World Series, signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.
Campos, 29, is expected to arrive in camp Thursday.
``He's going to compete for a job on our major league staff,'' assistant general manager David Wilder said. ``Our scouts really liked him. He received high recommendations and there were several major league clubs that were interested in him.''
Campos, who was signed as a catcher by the Houston Astros in 1991, converted to pitching in 1995. The right-hander has been pitching for Campeche in the Mexican League in the summer and Mazatlan in the Mexican Pacific League during the winter.
In 22 starts with Campeche this year, Campos was 10-7 with a 3.19 ERA. In 12 starts with Mazatlan, he was 5-2 with a 1.66 ERA.
Campos will get a chance to earn a spot in the Brewers' rotation, but can also work in long relief, Wilder said.
``He's good enough to do multiple things,'' Wilder said.
