View Full Version : Anyone have a problem with the AllStar selections???

I have heard on the radio and seen on various sites that there is a major problem with the way the AllStars are selected mainly because there were 4 Seattle starters selected to start azt the A.S. game next week....
That plus Ripken starting has set many people off...
Now I for one have no problem with this years selections...Unlike the past, I actually think the fans did a good job selecting the players....
Seriously, of all the players that could have been selected for the game which of the ones statistically should not belong there???
The only position in question in my view is 1st base as Giambi is having a better year than Olerud...But is having Olerud who is probably the best fielding 1st baseman and is hitting over .300 and is having another solid season at the plate that bad of a choice???
Suzuki belongs there with the type of season he is having as does Boone who is leading the AL in RBI's and Martinez who is a great DH having another solid season....
Suzuki leading in votes is obvious due to the internet voting around the world and the Japaneese people probably voted more so than ever...But he deserves it...
Now for Ripken, does his #'s justify him being there?? No!! But anyone who loves baseball should have no problem with Ripken being there....#'s or not, just the fact of what he has meant to the game makes him deserving in my book.....
As it does for Tony Gwynn (hopefully Bobby V does the right thing)
These are great players who have given their all to the game we love and this is their farewell...Let them have the opportunity to shine once more....
As far as the N.L. goes everyone selected deserves to be there.....Not much debate there.....
Just my opinion http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/smile.gif

It is a fan based process and the fans of each team must step to the plate... everyone has equal access.
Anybody griping about David Bell (who didn't deserve to go, based on his numbers) should be equally outraged at the fact that Cal Ripken Jr. is voted in as the starter. If he goes on reputation, then you better get Tony Gwynn a spot based on his rep as well. There have to be at least 4 third basemen with better numbers than Cal.
All I am saying here, before the "you hate Cal" replies come flooding in, is that if you want a player starting only if he deserves to start BASED ON NUMBERS, then Cal is undeserving...

I tried to register a ton of times, and everytime they wouldn't let me. They said that Last name field was required and everytime I tried, I got the same message. So I didn't get to vote at all. http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/mad.gif

You mean they didn't recognize '21' as a last name? LOL!
7 out of 25 players are from the Yankees? I have a little bit of trouble swallowing that one... there are a lot of other teams with players that are as deserving as some of these guys...

Jimbo,
I'd be curious as to who you think those guys are. The people I see as those legitimately screwed in the AL: Hudson, Wakefield, and maybe Jeff Nelson.
You can argue Tejada all you want, but his BA and OBP are atrocious.
I think Torre did the right thing in selecting 2 setup men. It's about time people recognize that without these guys, there's no sense in having a closer period.
As for the NL, Cliff Floyd not being there is just a travesty. Compare all of Floyd's numbers vs. all of Alou's numbers, combine that with where they play a majority of their games, and you tell me Floyd isn't more deserving.

I have a problem with several reserves ... starters aren't a problem.
It's great Torre recognized the setup men, but you don't need two of them; Quantrill would have been just fine. Mike Stanton definitely should not be there.
I also don't think Jeter deserves to be there. Torre had his back up shortstop in Guzman so there isn't a need for Jeter. He is not having that good of a season.
Pettite should not have made it over Hudson and Sele.
One Red Sock and only a couple Twins? Ridiculous.
In the NL ... Valentine did a better job than Torre but still could have done better. Floyd beats Alou in every category except batting average, and Floyd, with his .330 average, certainly isn't a slouch at the plate, like Vaughn (.246 BA) in the AL was. Alou is batting .363 and has played 12 less games than Floyd. In the next 12 games, who knows, Alou could be in the .330 range.
I don't see how Valentine can justify taking one Phillie. Mesa should have made it over Wagner without a doubt, and Daal has a strong case against Reed. Kerry Wood also has a case against Reed, and he comes from the staff that has the best team ERA in the NL.

Jeter is there for 2 reasons:
He was the MVP of last year's game...
He appears in every stinking media ad that is on TV. He is the poster child, they had to invite him...

Whoaaaaa there Jesse.....Without a doubt Mesa over Wagner???To me this could have gone either way as Mesa has a few more saves but a Wagner has a lower ERA and has struckout 45 in 32 innings so for the most part he has been dominant...
And NO WAY Daal has a strong case over Reed...Reed's ERA is like a run and a half better than Daals 4.68 ERA.....Wood maybe could have a case but Reed is 7-4 with a 3.10 ERA and Wood is 8-5 with a 3.38 ERA...You couldn't go wrong either way IMO..
I agree Wood should be there but instead of taking Reed off the team Bobby V should have left Hampton off the team.....
Obviously we all no the Floyd story http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/wink.gif

James ... my name is Josh, and not Jesse. http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/smile.gif
As for Daal, I believe he should have made it because the Phillies are in first place and definitely need more recognition than a shortstop. The Phils have a decent pitching staff, and that definitely should have been addressed somewhere.
And for Mesa ... if the Phillies didn't have Mesa they'd be in third place at least. They just do not have another closer in that bullpen that could save 35-40 games a year. Meanwhile, in the Astros bullpen Dotel could close, and earlier this season Jackson showed signs he could possibly close. The Astros have second options, and the Phillies do not. Mesa is just more integral to the Phillies success than Wagner is to the Astros success IMO.

Sorry about that JOSH http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/biggrin.gif I know it was a total insult to call you Jesse AKA: PAPS http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/wink.gif
LoL http://forum.addictsports.com/baseball/ubb/biggrin.gif
I'm not sure I buy the whole Daal thing as his ERA is just ok and he has recieved a lot of run support which have helped him to 9 wins....
And as for Mesa, yes I do agree with that they may not be where they ae now without him the selection should not be based totally on that...Wagner is having a great year as well and is helping the resurging Stros and trust me, DDotel is NOT a quality closer...He was their primary closer last year and his ERA was 5.40 and his career ERA is in the 5's....Not closer material...Do IMO Wagner is as important to the Stros as Mesa is to the Phillies.....
