Patriots: Abdullah signed
The News
The Patriots signed running back Rabih Abdullah as their third-string running back.
Our View
The Pats desperately needed depth, since they played Thursday's game without backup Kevin Faulk and were down to just fullback Patrick Pass behind starter Corey Dillon. Abdullah has no fantasy impact, other than the team may feel better about giving Dillon more work now that they at least have a warm body to back him up.

Dolphins: Gordon will be featured Sunday
The News
Running back Lamar Gordon will be the main ball carrier on Sunday for the Dolphins. Although no official announcement has been made, the Miami Herald reports that Gordon is expected to start and get the majority of the carries. Travis Minor and Sammy Morris, who were expected to get close to 30 carries combined last Sunday, both left the game early with sprained ankles. Their status is unknown. Gordon ran 12 times for 32 yards and added 30 yards on five receptions as well.
Our View
Coach Dave Wannstedt was happy with Gordon's play on Sunday. Considering Gordon performed adequately on only one day of practice prior to the Titans' game, another week of practice with the offense should do him some good. He is by no means an obvious fantasy start, but if you are desperate for running back help or need to fill in a flex position, Gordon has a nice match-up this week against a Bengals team that gave up 196 yards on the ground to Curtis Martin on Sunday. Be wary of Minor and/or Morris biting into some of his carries if they are healthy, however.

Chiefs: Hicks sprains ankle
The News
Chiefs defensive end Eric Hicks sprained his right ankle in their season-opening loss to the Broncos, according to the Chiefs' official website, and was on the sideline during Denver's clock-killing, fourth-quarter drive.
Our View
Hicks is the team's leading playmaker in the front four, so we'll keep you posted on his health for week two.

49ers: Rattay, Dorsey both appear on injury report
The News
49ers' quarterbacks Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey are both listed on the injury report. Rattay is listed as questionable with a shoulder strain, while Dorsey is considered probable with a neck stinger.
Our View
Rattay suffered his injury during the first half of yesterday's loss to the Falcons, yet returned to the game after Dorsey went down. Rattay was actually more effective while playing injured. At this point, we expect Tim to play on Sunday, but we'll continue to monitor his status throughout the week.

Giants: Shockey sees bigger numbers in the future
The News
Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey caught two passes for 39 yards in the season opener, but he also dropped two balls, including a wide-open look in the first quarter. He missed most of training camp and all four preseason games due to foot and hamstring injuries, and Shockey believes that he'll improve in the future. "I have to get better as a football player," he told the Newark Star-Ledger. "No. 80 on this football team will get better and it will happen quickly."
Our View
We are certainly hoping for better numbers from No. 80 in the future, and No. 80 should be able to supply them once he's more in rhythm with Kurt Warner and the offensive schemes.

49ers: Rumph suffers groin injury
The News
49ers' cornerback Mike Rumph injured a groin muscle while making a tackle during the week one game against the Falcons. Rumph is considered doubtful to play against the Saints on Sunday. "It's something I've done before and was able to come back from pretty quick, so I'm just going to rest it right now and do what they say once I get my MRI," Rumph told the Mercury News on Sunday.
Our View
This could be good news for fantasy owners who have Saints' wideout Donte' Stallworth on their rosters, as he would be pitted against Rumph on Sunday. Even if Rumph is able to play, the speedy Stallworth will test the defensive back's injured groin.

Broncos: Griffin breaks Portis' opening day record
The News
Broncos running back Quentin Griffin established a new franchise record for rushing yards on opening day. His 156 yards against the Chiefs eclipsed the previous record of 120 yards, ironically held by Q's predecessor, Clinton Portis. "It's nice to see Quentin come in and play at that level," Mike Shanahan said. "It didn't really surprise me, but any time you go into your first game and you have a lot of pressure on you, it's always nice to see a guy step up and get it done."
Our View
Griffin clearly established himself as the Broncos' starting running back, and until he opens the door for someone else, he should be the recipient of all the fantasy production we have come to know and love from that position. He won't always have a favorable matchup like he did against the Chiefs, but he should be starting in all formats.

Buccaneers: Galloway to miss at least a month
The News
Buccaneers' wide receiver Joey Galloway will be sidelined four-to-six weeks by the groin injury he suffered during the 16-10 loss to the Redskins on Saturday. Buccaneers' head coach Jon Gruden referred to the injury as a "significant tear in his left groin." Gruden also told the Tampa Tribune that Galloway will not need surgery.
Our View
We don't believe that Galloway's injury will have any affect on Keenan McCardell's holdout, as the feud between the disgruntled receiver and Bucs' general manager Bruce Allen appears to have become too personal for either side to compromise. Instead, rookie wideout Michael Clayton and fossil Tim Brown are likely to have more passes thrown in their direction.

Dolphins: Feeley to start Sunday
The News
A.J. Feeley was named the starter for Sunday's game with the Bengals. Feeley replaced an ineffective Jay Fiedler during Saturday's game against the Titans. He played the second half, completing 21 of 31 pass attempts for 168 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Our View
Coach Dave Wannstedt wouldn't commit to anything beyond this weekend's game, and the odds are Feeley will be on just as short a leash as Fiedler was in the opener. This week's matchup is actually a favorabale one against the Bengals and their banged-up secondary, however it is ridiculous to recommend starting a Dolphins' signal-caller at this point, considering their unsettled running back situation and the fact that Feeley could get yanked after making a couple of mistakes.

Cowboys: Johnson and Bryant both go over 100
The News
Cowboys wide receivers Keyshawn Johnson (111) and Antonio Bryant (112) both eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark on Sunday against the Vikings. They were the first pair of Cowboy wide receivers to both go over 100 yards since Michael Irvin and Raghib Ismail performed the feat on September 12, 1999 in an overtime game against the Redskins.
Our View
We don't expect the Cowboys to throw the ball 50 times per week, and we certainly think opposing teams will generate a better pass rush than the Vikings did on Sunday. In other words, the 100-yard efforts should not be the norm for Johnson and Bryant. However, the outing does show that Vinny Testaverde is on the same page as his receivers, and there might be more fantasy value in this passing game than we initially thought.

Bills: McGahee not part of game plan
The News
Early on Sunday, a certain sports media source currently celebrating its 25th anniversary reported that Willis McGahee would get significant carries, including at the goal line, against the Jaguars. In reality, McGahee did not touch the ball until the second half, and had eight of his nine carries on the last series of the game, when starter Travis Henry was sitting with cramps. In the only real goal line situation, Henry rushed twice from the Jacksonville three-yard line, but couldn't cross the stripe. Henry finished with 23 carries for 75 yards. McGahee had 31 yards on nine carries.
Our View
It looks like the whole goal line back thing was way overblown. It's still very possible Willis has an impact this year, but Henry is clearly the main man in Buffalo right now. Until we see otherwise during meaningful game action, we're sticking with him in all situations.

Cowboys: George frustrated but not surprised
The News
Cowboys running back Eddie George played just three series on Sunday and did not appear the in second half of the loss to the Vikings. "That's just how it worked out," head coach Bill Parcells told the team's official web site. Since the Cowboys were playing from behind, George understood that the team needed to throw a lot in the second half. "I wasn't really surprised," he said. "I knew we were trying to pass the ball and get back in the game. I'm frustrated with the game overall and that we couldn't put it in the end zone. But I really don't know what's going to happen (next week)."
Our View
If Eddie has no idea how many carries he's going to get from week-to-week, it's pretty tough for us to have an idea about the rushing distribution. The Cowboys shouldn't be playing from behind every single week, so we look for them to run the ball more in the future. However, Julius Jones will be around in future weeks to get carries, and ReShard Lee looked pretty good on Sunday. In other words, fantasy owners should not be relying heavily George in week two and beyond.

Vikings: Irvin ruptures Achilles
The News
Vikings' cornerback Ken Irvin ruptured his right Achilles' tendon during pregame warm-ups on Sunday and will miss the entire season.
Our View
The Vikings' lack of cornerback depth is showing. Vinny Testaverde threw for 355 yards against them in week one.
September 13, 2004 9:13 AM ET
Bears: Terrell has career day
The News
David Terrell was the only Bears wide receiver who showed up in week one against the Lions, catching five passes for a career-high 126 yards. He also drew a couple flags; one for taunting. 'It's about playing football. I am not out there talking to nobody," Terrell told the Chicago Sun-Times in response to questions about the 24 yards worth of penalties he was called for. "I'm not out there saying nothing to nobody. I'm playing football. I am not out there show-boating. I'm playing football. That's it, I'm out. Peace.'
Our View
Ah, David. We really want to believe that you're finally going to do something with that talent of yours, but your attitude just keeps getting in the way. We're out. Peace.

Broncos: Griffin goes off
The News
Quentin Griffin blew up in his debut as the Broncos' feature running back, gaining 156 yards and scoring two rushing touchdowns on 23 carries. He also added a short touchdown reception from the one-yard line.
Our View
Griffin was inches away from a fourth touchdown when he fumbled at the goal line, but in fairness, Q blew up on Sunday night. He performed in short-yardage situations (fourth-and-inches) and flashed big play ability (a 47-yard breakaway run). Rookie Tatum Bell and veteran Garrison Hearst got only four total handoffs as Griffin firmly positioned himself to be Denver's exclusive back for the long haul.

September 13, 2004 12:01 AM ET
Chiefs: Holmes off to a fast start
The News
It didn't take long for Priest Holmes to begin his assault on the single-season scoring record he established last year. Holmes scored three times on Sunday night against the Broncos, twice from the red zone as usual and once on a 33-yard breakaway jaunt, and he totaled 151 yards on 26 carries.
Our View
Not only did Holmes reach paydirt like usual, he flashed the speed and elusiveness to amass huge chunks of yardage—something he said was his goal coming into the season. As a matter of reference, Holmes had only three 100-yard rushing games last season and only one in which he gained more than Sunday's 151 yards.

Titans: Anderson returns, Elling released
The News
Gary Anderson officially ended his retirement (again) and has signed a contract with the Titans. ESPN reports that Anderson signed a one-year contract worth $760,000. Aaron Elling, who filled in admirably as a kicker and punter last week because of injuries suffered by kicker Joe Nedney and punter Craig Hentrich. Nedney is out for the year with a hamstring injury, and Hentrich suffered a minor back injury that prevented him from playing in week one.
Our View
The Titans could save everyone a lot of trouble by signing Anderson to a long-term contract. Sure, he might be 45 years-old, but whether it's with the Titans or the Vikings, you can always count on Gary to come out of retirement. He may no longer possess the leg he had when he was younger, but he has been nearly perfect from inside 40 yards throughout his 22-year career. The Titans should score plenty of points this season, so Anderson is a solid No. 2 fantasy kicker (at worst) in most scoring formats.

Chargers: Dingle out for week two
The News
Defensive end Adrian Dingle will likely miss Sunday's game against the Jets because of a quad injury suffered in the season opener, according to the North County Times.
Our View
According to the Times, he will be replaced by one of Jacques Cesaire, DeQuincy Scott, or Dave Ball. None of the above should be used for IDP purposes.

Raiders: Harris may return
The News
Raiders head coach Norv Turner told the San Jose Mercury News that he is hopeful that starting middle linebacker Napoleon Harris will be able to return from his preseason knee injury in time for this week's contest against the Bills.
Our View
Harris has definite play-making ability in the Raiders' new defense and will be a welcome addition to fantasy lineups with individual defensive players. We'll keep you posted on his status as the Raiders return to practice mid-week.

September 14, 2004 6:30 PM ET
Packers: McKenzie to end holdout
The News
Packers' cornerback Mike McKenzie will end his holdout and report to practice on Wednesday, according to ESPN.com reporter Len Pasquarelli. However, McKenzie's agent Drew Rosenhaus says his client has not withdrawn his trade request. "The top priority for Mike remains a trade," Rosenhaus said on Tuesday. "And maybe him coming in will precipitate something. Sometimes you have to change the strategy, to try something new."
Our View
McKenzie has three years remaining on his contract, so he really didn't have any leverage to begin with. There is no word yet as to whether he will play Sunday against the Bears.

September 14, 2004 5:02 PM ET
Eagles: Levens re-signed
The News
The Eagles re-signed running back Dorsey Levens to a one-year contract on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.
Our View
Levens is just an insurance blanket for Brian Westbrook. The Eagles will continue to feature Westbrook in all situations, and Levens may receive an occasional carry in a change-of-pace situation.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 4:29 PM ET
Raiders: Gabriel, Rice will rotate
The News
In the wake of Jerry Rice's surprise benching in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Steelers, coach Norv Turner told the San Jose Mercury News that they had planned all along to mix in backup receiver Doug Gabriel and will continue to rotate the two going forward.
Our View
With another long touchdown to go along with three preseason scores, Gabriel is making it very difficult to keep him off the field. He certainly seems to be taking to Turner's vertical passing attack.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 4:24 PM ET
Broncos: Walls out a month
The News
Broncos starting cornerback Lenny Walls will miss up to four weeks with a dislocated shoulder suffered in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's win over the Chiefs, according to the team's official website. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Kelly Herndon, who started several games last season.
Our View
Walls also missed most of the preseason following arthroscopic surgery on his ankle. He could be back sooner than four weeks, but for the time being, the Broncos secondary is a bit thin behind Herndon.

Ravens: Taylor questionable for Sunday
The News
Wide receiver Travis Taylor aggravated his groin injury and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers. An MRI Monday indicated the injury may be more severe than the original groin pull Taylor had been playing with, according to Ravens coach Brian Billick.
Our View
Randy Hymes would start in Taylor's place, and the Ravens would be reduced to just three healthy wideouts—Hymes, Kevin Johnson, and Devard Darling. Tight end Todd Heap, who is usually the Ravens' primary receiver anyway, may become an even bigger part of the downfield passing attack this weekend.

September 14, 2004 3:50 PM ET
Chargers: Dwight to resume practicing
The News
Wide receiver Tim Dwight will return to practice on Wednesday and should be ready to participate in Sunday's contest against the Jets, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. He missed the season opener with a hamstring injury.
Our View
Dwight's hold on a starting job should be slipping after Reche Caldwell's solid performance last Sunday. Of course, that assumes the Chargers know what's good for them, which is very debatable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 3:15 PM ET
Chargers: O-line has solid debut
The News
Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer praised his brand new offensive line in the wake of Sunday's season-opening win at Houston. "They battled their tail off," he told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "We had a number of errors, more than 10 mental errors, and that's to be expected. But I think the positive thing was that nobody lost their poise, nobody came unglued about the circumstance."
Our View
The line play was far from pretty, but fantasy football is all about results, and the line helped LaDainian Tomlinson roll up 121 rushing yards and only allowed Drew Brees to be sacked once.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 3:10 PM ET
Chiefs: Welbourn struggles
The News
In his first career game as a right tackle, former left guard John Welbourn struggled, specifically in the passing game. "Sometimes you take a guy that's been playing left guard for four years and put him in a full time game for the first time, and it's a different experience," coach Dick Vermeil told the Chiefs' official website. "I think he's tough enough, certainly bright enough and mean enough and athletic enough to end up playing the position well. But he's going to go through some apprenticeship."
Our View
Priest Holmes had a fantastic yardage day against the Broncos, but Trent Green and the Kansas City's passing attack never got untracked. Welbourn has another nasty matchup against the solid front four of Carolina next week. Remember, this is the first turnover that the Chiefs have had on the offensive line in the last three years.

Lions: Mariucci doesn't consider Rogers injury prone
The News
Despite breaking his right collarbone for the second time in less than a year, Lions wide receiver Charles Rogers isn't injury prone in the opinion of head coach Steve Mariucci. "Hopefully, after the surgery, it'll be stronger than ever before," Mariucci told the Detroit Free Press. "I think it's just very coincidental right now and unfortunate. Let's go through the surgery and see what they think once they go in there and fix it. We'll see what the prognosis is. My guess is they're going to be optimistic and say this thing is fixed now and once he heals, he won't have to worry much about it anymore."
Our View
Whether it's deserved or not, the "fragile" tag is firmly applied to Rogers now. He'll need to make it through an entire season or two before he shakes it and his fantasy value recovers.

Raiders: Fargas nursing toe injury
The News
The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Raiders backup running back Justin Fargas was forced out of last Sunday's loss to the Steelers due to a sore left toe. Coach Norv Turner said the injury will require a couple of days to determine its severity.
Our View
Starter Tyrone Wheatley (11 carries, 24 yards) struggled against the Steelers, but Turner was quick to point out that the defense was doing everything in its power to prevent them from running inside. Fargas didn't fare much better, and the ground game faces another tough opponent in Buffalo next week. We'll keep you posted on Fargas' status, but he doesn't belong in your starting lineup next week.

Titans: Kicking situation still up in the air
The News
Who will kick for the Titans this week remains a mystery, as the team is waiting on Craig Hentrich's sore back before making any decisions. Hentrich said in a published report he plans to play Sunday against the Colts, but he declined to share the results of an MRI with reporters Monday. Meanwhile, veteran Gary Anderson remains in Canada, willing to board a plane and join the Titans as soon as they require his services. Aaron Elling, who handled both punting and kicking chores after Hentrich came up lame last week, remains on the roster.
Our View
The Titans say they're willing to carry three kickers on their roster this week, though that's hardly an ideal situation. You'd best look elsewhere for a fantasy kicker this week, as the Titans probably won't decide anything until Thursday or Friday.

September 14, 2004 2:18 PM ET
Ravens: Gregg has knee surgery
The News
Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg had minor knee surgery Monday and could miss two weeks of action. Gregg was injured in the Ravens' season-opening loss to Cleveland.
Our View
Gregg is a solid fantasy lineman who ranked among the league leaders at his position in tackles last season. Rookie Dwan Edwards would likely see a sharp increase in playing time with Gregg on the sidelines.
September 14, 2004 2:16 PM ET
Lions: Smith to have shoulder surgery
The News
Lions' backup running back/fullback Paul Smith will undergo shoulder surgery this week. He might land on Injured Reserve if extensive repairs are needed.
Our View
If Smith goes on IR, we could see more of Shawn Bryson backing up Cory Schlesinger at fullback.

September 14, 2004 2:04 PM ET
Steelers: Faneca breaks finger
The News
Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca suffered a broken left ring finger in Sunday's win over the Raiders, but he won't miss any playing time because of it.
Our View
The Steelers can ill afford to lose another lineman, especially their best one. Faneca had a cast on the injured digit Monday but will be in the lineup this weekend against the Ravens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 2:01 PM ET
Panthers: Colbert to start
The News
Fanball has learned that rookie wide receiver Keary Colbert will start in place of the injured Steve Smith on Sunday against the Chiefs. Smith is expected to miss at least a month with the broken fibula he suffered during the 24-14 loss to the Packers on Monday night. During the preseason, Colbert had eight receptions for 276 yards and three touchdowns while playing mostly with the second-team offense.
Our View
Given Colbert's impressive preseason numbers and the Panthers' sudden emphasis on the passing game, the rookie wideout could be a solid fantasy replacement for Smith.

September 14, 2004 1:46 PM ET
Packers: Jackson dislocates knee
The News
Packers' defensive tackle Grady Jackson suffered a dislocated left kneecap on the third play from scrimmage during their Monday night game against the Panthers. Jackson will undergo more tests on Tuesday to determine the extent of the damage.
Our View
If this is "just" a dislocation, Jackson will miss four-to-six weeks, but if there is ligament damage, he could be lost for the season. Grady is the glue that holds their line together so this is a pretty big blow to the front seven…not that the defense fell apart without him against the Panthers.

Cardinals: Green defends McCown
The News
Cardinals' head coach Dennis Green said Monday that starting quarterback Josh McCown's job security is not in jeopardy. "The worst thing we'd ever do is think that it's all about the quarterback," Green told the Arizona Republic. "This is not that kind of offense, and I think if you look throughout the history of the teams that have played this style of play and been successful, it's never the quarterback that keeps it from going. He's the driver, but it's never one player."
Our View
If it's not the quarterback's fault, then why did Green feel the need to change "drivers" eight times during the 10 seasons he coached the Vikings? If McCown continues to struggle, it's probably only a matter of time before Denny calls on No. 2 quarterback Shaun King.

Seahawks: Alexander details knee injury
The News
Seahawks' running back Shaun Alexander said Monday he feels lucky that he did not suffer a more serious knee injury in week one against the Saints. "All I know is that the leg bone and the knee bone smacked into each other, and that's not normal," Alexander told the Seattle Times. "Everybody said I'm really blessed. Normally you do tear an MCL or an ACL. The bones are just bruised, but the ligaments are all straight." Alexander is still hopeful of playing on Sunday against the Buccaneers.
Our View
If Alexander cannot play, Maurice Morris would replace him in the starting lineup. No. 3 running back Kerry Carter's role would also increase without Alexander in the lineup.

Vikings: Williams' status up in the air
The News
It's looking like Moe Williams won't be available for their Monday night game against the Eagles. The Vikings running back left their week one game against the Cowboys with a sprained right ankle and had a boot on his foot and was on crutches Monday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Our View
The Vikings will probably hold Williams out of practice until the weekend. Right now it does not look like he'll be suiting up against the Eagles next Monday night. Onterrio Smith will get the bulk of the carries even if Moe is available.

September 14, 2004 1:19 PM ET
Redskins: Taylor loses focus, playing time
The News
Redskins rookie safety Sean Taylor didn't start on Sunday and didn't see too much action, and the team gave their reasons on Monday. Taylor, who was battling an illness last Monday, reportedly did not appear focused or effective in practice throughout the week, the Washington Times wrote. It's unknown whether the dejected rookie will see more time or regain his starting role this week. "When coaches feel you're ready, they're going to put you in at the right time," cornerback Fred Smoot said. "Basically I just tried to keep his head up, let him know that he's going to be a star in this league."
Our View
Fantasy owners who picked up Taylor in their IDP leagues had to be disappointed on Sunday, but we expect Sean's playing time to grow in the coming weeks. It might be best to use other options until his role is clearer, though.

Texans: Brown gets bell rung
The News
Kicker Kris Brown suffered a concussion in Sunday's season-opening loss to the Chargers, but it won't keep him out of action this week. Brown was injured while making a tackle on a kickoff and lay motionless on the field for some time before getting to his feet.
Our View
Brown returned to the game and kicked an extra point, so the fog must have lifted quickly. Maybe they told him he was Jan Stenerud while he was woozy. He's fully expected to kick this weekend against the Lions.

September 14, 2004 1:07 PM ET
Falcons: Pruitt signed, Melton released
The News
The Falcons re-signed safety Etric Pruitt on Monday, according to the team website. Pruitt had been released over the weekend, but team officials elected to re-sign him. To make room on the roster for Pruitt, the Falcons released linebacker Terrence Melton.
Our View
The move was made to add depth to the secondary. Pruitt does not have fantasy value in leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Steelers: Bettis ties record
The News
Jerome Bettis tied a little-known NFL record with his five-carry, one-yard, three-touchdown performance Sunday against the Raiders. The Bus etched his name in history alongside the Chargers' Hank Bauer for the fewest rushing yards while running for three or more touchdowns. Bauer had one yard and three touchdowns on four carries in 1979 against the Saints.
Our View
Bettis appears to be set as the Steelers' go-to guy at the stripe, so those in basic scoring leagues can sit back and watch the scores pile up.

Chiefs: Morton will likely start Sunday
The News
Head coach Dick Vermeil told the team's official website that wide receiver Johnnie Morton will probably start this week against the Panthers, a week after testing his ailing Achilles' tendon on Sunday against the Broncos. Backup Dante Hall started for Morton against Denver.
Our View
Morton caught only three passes for 30 yards last week, and the Panthers have allowed only one wide receiver score since week 11 of last year. Keep the Chiefs' receivers on the pine this week.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 12:53 PM ET
Jaguars: Fu returns
The News
Fullback Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, out the past month with a foot injury, is expected to return to practice this week and may play Sunday against Denver.
Our View
Fu gives the Jags another short-yardage option, but he's way down on the pecking order and nowhere near a decent fantasy play.

Broncos: Pryce battles through back pain
The News
Defensive lineman Trevor Pryce was nearly sidelined by lower back pain last Sunday, but he played through the injury to participate in 40 plays against the Chiefs. "He's getting an epidural," coach Mike Shanahan told the team's official website. "Hopefully that will alleviate some of the pain, and he'll be able to practice on Wednesday."
Our View
Pryce was forced to move inside to tackle due to the injury to Luther Elliss, a switch that limited his opportunities to get after the quarterback and register significant IDP fantasy totals. Due to the position change and the of course injury, he had just one tackle on Sunday.

Colts: Burris, Duff get workouts
The News
Former Colt Jeff Burris and ex-Texan Vontez Duff are getting tryouts from the Colts, who are looking to shore up a defensive secondary decimated by injury. Burris, who started 61 games for the Colts from 1998 to 2001, played for the Bengals in 2003 and was released by the Patriots in the offseason. Duff, a sixth-round pick out of Notre Dame, was cut during the preseason.
Our View
Both of Indy's starting corners, Nick Harper and Donald Strickland, are nursing shoulder injuries. Joseph Jefferson is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, and Jason David and Von Hutchins are rookies. The situation isn't much better at safety, where rookie Bob Sanders is unlikely to be available for this game and Cory Bird has yet to be cleared to play after suffering a concussion in the preseason finale.

Saints: McAllister gets his wish; more fullback
The News
Saints' running back Deuce McAllister has been trying to put on a happy face for the local media for months now, but it's been obvious to just about everyone that he is not crazy about head coach Jim Haslett's decision to use more two-tight end sets as opposed to using a fullback. On Monday, Haslett said he has decided to use fullback Mike Karney on early downs. "We're going to go back to what we do best," Haslett told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Our View
This could be bad news for tight end Boo Williams, whose poor blocking was singled out by Haslett as one of the primary reasons McAllister was held to 57 yards rushing in the week one game against the Seahawks. Williams will still be featured in passing situations, but fellow tight end Ernie Conwell might be used as the lone tight end whenever Karney is on the field.

Vikings: Kleinsasser might be out a month
The News
Vikings' tight end Jim Kleinsasser's right knee injury is worse than initially feared. An MRI on Monday revealed damage to his anterior cruciate ligament, and surgery is a possibility. Kleinsasser is doubtful for Monday night's game against the Eagles and might miss as much as a month. "We'll monitor it over the next week and get a better idea of where we're at," head coach Mike Tice told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Our View
Kleinsasser is an under-appreciated player; he's an important blocker for the Vikings' offense, and is a top-15 fantasy tight end. With him out, the Vikings will lean on Jermaine Wiggins to catch a few passes.

Cowboys: Testaverde fine after 50 throws
The News
Cowboys quarterback Vinny Testaverde said his arm felt fine on Monday after making 50 throws in Sunday's game. However, the quarterback pointed out that tossing so many passes was not the plan. "Our main emphasis wasn't to throw it 50 times," Testaverde told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "It was to control the time of possession. We didn't live up to our end of the bargain. We need to score more points in the red zone."
Our View
The Cowboys prefer to win with a strong defense and by controlling the clock via the running game. Unfortunately that did not happen on Sunday, and fantasy owners may be misled into thinking that strong numbers from Testaverde, Keyshawn Johnson, Antonio Bryant, and Terry Glenn will be the norm. Don't jump on that bandwagon just yet, folks.

Titans: Calico may play Sunday
The News
Wide receiver Tyrone Calico, who missed the season opener after spraining both knees in the preseason finale, has run on a treadmill in recent days and could be available for this Sunday's AFC South showdown with the Colts. "You'll have to ask the coaches," Calico told the Tennessean. "If it was up to me I'd say I'll be able to do it, but you'll have to ask Coach Fisher."
Our View
Calico had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee but said that knee is not bothering him any more than the other. The Titans threw just 14 times in week one, so Calico was not greatly missed.

Buccaneers: Smith questionable with rib injury
The News
Buccaneers' strong safety Dwight Smith suffered bruised ribs during the week one game against the Redskins and is listed as questionable on the injury report for Sunday's game against the Seahawks. Buccaneers' head coach Jon Gruden told the Tampa Tribune that he is "optimistic" regarding the possibility of Smith playing this week. If Smith is unable to go, John Howell and rookie Will Allen will likely share the duty of filling in for him.
Our View
Smith is a top-20 safety in fantasy leagues that award points for individual defensive players.

Vikings: Bennett update
The News
Vikings running back Michael Bennett continues to make progress with his sprained right knee. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports Bennett began a running program over the weekend, and while he could be ready in time to play in week three he will probably be held out through their week four bye and play in week five. He says he is running at about 70 percent. "Coach Tice said to just take my time with it," Bennett said. "We still have Onterrio Smith, Moe Williams, Mewelde Moore, and Larry Ned. It's just a matter of time. If I have to wait, I have to wait. But I'm getting better each and every day."
Our View
We'd be surprised to see Bennett back before week five so fantasy owners should already have a plan B in place. The Vikings' depth at running back is being tested with Bennett out and Williams nursing a sprained ankle. Smith is easily their safest fantasy play right now…at least until he starts serving his suspension.

Broncos: Lelie plays through dislocated shoulder
The News
The Broncos' official website is reporting that wide receiver Ashley Lelie dislocated his shoulder during Sunday's win over the Chiefs, but returned after the injury to catch four passes for 88 yards, including a 58-yard bomb. "He should be all right," coach Mike Shanahan said. "Any time you shoulder pops out, there's definitely pain. But they popped it back in and he played with it. It's very impressive."
Our View
This is the kind of effort that will endear Lelie to Shanahan and fantasy owners. We'll keep you posted on how he is feeling in practice, but week two's matchup at Jacksonville isn't all that encouraging anyway. The Jags gave up just 14 points per game in their last seven efforts a year ago and looked equally stingy at Buffalo last Sunday.

Eagles: Sheppard should be able to play on Monday
The News
Eagles starting cornerback Lito Sheppard saw a hand specialist on Monday, and there's a "good chance" he'll be able to play on Monday, head coach Andy Reid told the team's official web site. Sheppard broke his right thumb during Sunday's game. He will wear a cast during the week. The Eagles host the Vikings on Monday night.
Our View
The Eagles can't really afford to lose anybody at the cornerback spot, but Sheppard is certainly going to have a tough time containing the Vikings receivers with a broken thumb. We can't upgrade Randy Moss any higher than number one, but fantasy owners in deeper leagues may want to think about using some of the Vikings other receivers.

Panthers: Colbert, Proehl leading candidates to fill in for Smith
The News
With wide receiver Steve Smith sidelined for at least a month with a broken fibula, the Charlotte Observer reports that Panthers' head coach John Fox is considering whether to replace his top receiver with 15-year veteran Ricky Proehl or rookie Keary Colbert. Wideout Karl Hankton filled in on Monday night after Smith was carted off the field, but Fox apparently doesn't consider the eighth-year veteran a starting caliber player.
Our View
At age 36, Proehl probably doesn't have enough gas left in the tank to play on every down. We'd prefer to see Colbert move into the starting lineup. Keary obviously lacks experience, but he has more upside than Proehl, and finished the preseason with eight receptions for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

Titans: Brown should play on Sunday
The News
An MRI on Chris Brown's sprained left ankle revealed no significant damage, and the Titans running back should be available for Sunday's AFC South showdown with the Colts. "I ain't worried that much about it," Brown told the Tennessean. "I should be all right in a couple of days and ready to go again on Sunday."
Our View
Brown was not limping, nor was his ankle wrapped, when he visited Titans' facilities Monday. He rushed for 100 yards in the first half against Miami but sat out the entire second half.

Cowboys: Anderson awaiting MRI results
The News
Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells told the team's official web site on Monday that he did not yet have the MRI results on running back Richie Anderson's sprained knee. Anderson suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. Parcells said that Anderson is "nicked up," and the coach does not think it is serious.
Our View
Anderson is much, more important to the Cowboys than he is to fantasy leagues. Parcells asks a lot of the veteran, and the team would miss his presence on offense. We'll let you know when more info in available.

Giants: Coughlin unsure on Stoutmire knee injury
The News
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin did not have much of an update Monday on safety Omar Stoutmire's knee injury. Coughlin confirmed the injury with the team's official web site but added "to what extent, we're not sure."
Our View
The Giants rotated Stoutmire, Brent Alexander, and Shaun Williams at the two safety spots in the opener, and if Omar needs to miss time, both Alexander and Williams would see a boost in production. However, this troubled defense would also become that much weaker.

Cowboys: Walter's status unclear, but not serious
The News
Cowboys starting center Tyson Walter sprained his knee on Sunday, and although head coach Bill Parcells did not have official word on the extent of the injury, the coach told the team's official web site that Walter would not need surgery. "Those injuries don't look quite as bad as they did (Sunday)," the coach said of ailments to Walter and right guard Andre Gurode. "I can't tell you exactly where we are yet. I'll probably have to tell you on Wednesday."
Our View
Walter did try to stay in the game after injuring his knee, so we're hoping that this is a short-term ailment. Al Johnson would start if Walter misses any time.

September 14, 2004 10:53 AM ET
Giants: Severity of Emmons injury still unknown
The News
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin did not have much update on the status of starting linebacker Carlos Emmons Monday. Emmons injured his groin during Sunday's game against the Eagles, and the coach told the team's official web site that they would not know more on the linebacker's status until the soreness subsided.
Our View
Groin injuries typically don't go away very quickly, and our guess is that Emmons could be sidelined for some time. Fantasy owners who employ Carlos in IDP leagues should use another option for at least the week ahead.
September 14, 2004 10:49 AM ET
Cowboys: Gurode knee injury not too serious
The News
Cowboys starting right guard Andre Gurode sprained his knee on Sunday, and although head coach Bill Parcells did not have official word on the extent of the injury, the coach told the team's official web site that Gurode would not need surgery. "Those injuries don't look quite as bad as they did (Sunday)," the coach said of ailments to Gurode and center Tyson Walter. "I can't tell you exactly where we are yet. I'll probably have to tell you on Wednesday."
Our View
While positive, this news doesn't mean that Gurode won't miss some games with a minor sprain. We'll let you know when more info is available, as obviously it's never good to lose a starting lineman.

Jets: Jordan down and out
The News
LaMont Jordan did not get any carries and caught just one pass for five yards in Sunday's win over the Bengals. He sat on the sidelines as starter Curtis Martin racked up 196 yards and two touchdowns.
Our View
There have been grumblings that perhaps Jordan would cut into Martin's carries as the Jets begin looking for their back of the future. That now appears to be a moot point. Despite coach Herm Edwards continuously insisting that Jordan has a role in this offense, we'll believe it when we see it. Jordan does not appear to have any fantasy value at this point, and unless he somehow steals some goal line carries or Martin gets injured, he won't all year.

Titans: Brown's ankle improving
The News
Running back Chris Brown, who rushed for 100 yards in his first NFL start but sat out the entire second half of Saturday's win over Miami with a sprained ankle, is improving, according to Titans coach Jeff Fisher. However, the team still plans to run more tests on their second-year back before making a decision as to his availability for this weeks' AFC South showdown with the Colts.
Our View
Antowain Smith was unimpressive in relief of Brown. If Brown can't go, expect Robert Holcombe to see an uptick in his workload.

Colts: Cobbling together a secondary
The News
The Colts' secondary, which was picked apart by Tom Brady in the season opener, won't likely have all its pieces assembled for Sunday's AFC South showdown against the Titans. Starting strong safety Mike Doss will miss at least three weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the Patriots game, and his backup, Cory Bird, hasn't been cleared to play since suffering a concussion in the final exhibition game. Second-round pick Bob Sanders was added to the active roster Monday, but he is still not ready to provide a significant contribution after holding out for much of the preseason.
Our View
Cornerback Donald Strickland will get some work at safety this week, though he is playing through an injured right shoulder. Expect Steve McNair to attack the Colts' secondary much like Brady did—and similar results are a distinct possibility.

Jaguars: Scobee solid in NFL debut
The News
Rookie kicker Josh Scobee converted both of his field goal tries and launched all three of his kickoff attempts into the end zone during his NFL debut Sunday. The Bills' best return of a Scobee kickoff was to the 21-yard line.
Our View
Scobee was considered the top kickoff specialist coming out of college, and his accuracy is another breath of fresh air for a Jaguars team who struggled through Seth Marler's growing pains a year ago.

September 14, 2004 2:30 AM ET
Bengals: Warrick's knee holds up
The News
Wide receiver Peter Warrick was limited throughout the preseason by residual pain in his surgically repaired knee. The injury didn't seem to bother him in the season opener, however, as he had five catches for 76 yards and rushed once for eight more yards.
Our View
Kelley Washington and T.J. Houshmandzadeh were also incorporated into the Bengals' passing game, but it's great news that Warrick's knee isn't bothering him. He shouldn't be counted on to replicate last year's breakout season, but he's still worthy of consideration in most fantasy leagues.

Ravens: Hymes fills in for Taylor
The News
Wide receiver Travis Taylor aggravated a groin injury and was held out of the second half of Baltimore's season-opening loss to Baltimore. The injury left the Ravens with only three healthy receivers, and Randy Hymes was called on to take Taylor's place in the lineup.
Our View
Hymes made a nice play to convert a third-and-15, but overall the Ravens' passing game was nondescript. Taylor is scheduled for an MRI, and if he is to miss any time Hymes would make an intriguing fantasy play.

Browns: Suggs has stenosis
The News
Running back Lee Suggs, who sat out Sunday's win over the Ravens with a neck stinger, also has a condition called stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal column. Browns coach Butch Davis said at the time Suggs was drafted that the condition was not uncommon and wouldn't interfere with Suggs' career. However, published reports indicate the team is being extra cautious with his current neck injury because of the condition.
Our View
William Green started in Suggs' place, and both Green and James Jackson saw carries. Suggs could return this week, but the Browns face another strong run defense in the Cowboys so from a fantasy perspective there's no need for Suggs to hurry back.

Panthers: Smith fractures fibula
The News
Wide receiver Steve Smith will miss at least a month after fracturing his left fibula in a season-opening loss to the Packers. Smith sustained the injury with about five minutes remaining in the game, as he made a catch and was dragged down from behind by Hannibal Navies. Smith was in obvious pain as he went down and had to be helped off the field. Panther head coach John Fox said in his postgame news conference that Smith had suffered a fractured fibula. He will be out at least a month, and possibly longer depending on the severity of the injury.
Our View
Karl Hankton took Smith's place in the lineup and caught two passes on the team's final drive. He and rookie Keary Colbert are the likely fill-in candidates for the Panthers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 14, 2004 12:15 AM ET
Packers: Green goes off
The News
Ahman Green rushed for 119 yards on 33 carries and scored three touchdowns on Monday night. The Panthers could do nothing to stop the Packers' rushing attack, and Green pounded the ball down their throat. He scored on runs of six and three yards, and also caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Brett Favre.
Our View
Green did no want to be outdone by fellow top five fantasy running backs Priest Holmes and Shaun Alexander. He gave notice that his 2003 was no fluke, and looks to be on track for another stellar campaign. It is also worth noting that this performance came against what many believe to be the NFL's best defensive line.

Giants: Stoutmire out for season with torn ACL
The News
Giants safety Omar Stoutmire will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Stoutmire suffered the injury on Sunday, and head coach Tom Coughlin announced the MRI results on Wednesday. According to the team's official web site, Stoutmire has been placed on Injured Reserve.
Our View
Stoutmire was the only healthy man in the Giants starting secondary last season, and now he's the one out with the major injury. Stoutmire had been part of a three-man safety rotation with Shaun Williams and Brent Alexander, but now Williams and Alexander should see more playing time. Sadly, this poor secondary is now looking very thin behind the starting four.

Browns: Warren expected to play
The News
Defensive tackle Gerard Warren, who was knocked out of the Browns' season opener with a strained pectoral muscle, is expected to be available for Sunday's game in Dallas.
Our View
Michael Myers played well in Warren's absence, so expect him to see plenty of action even if Warren is healthy.

September 15, 2004 4:18 PM ET
Chiefs: Secondary hurting
The News
The Chiefs came away from Sunday's week-one loss at Denver with several injuries in their defensive backfield, most notably suffered by starting cornerback Eric Warfield (knee) and starting safety Greg Wesley (hamstring). According to the Kansas City Star, Warfield is considered questionable to probable for Sunday's game against Carolina, and Wesley is questionable.
Our View
The Chiefs' secondary dealt with injuries all preseason and left the opener even more banged-up. Reserve corner William Bartee also suffered a sprained neck, though he is probable. Typically, we would upgrade the opponents' fantasy potential through the air, but we're not sure that the Panthers minus Steve Smith will be able to take advantage. Upgrade Jake Delhomme, Muhsin Muhammad, and sudden starter Keary Colbert slightly.

Browns: Suggs cleared for workouts
The News
Running back Lee Suggs, who sat out the Browns' season opener with a stinger in his neck, has been cleared by doctors to return to practice. The plan will be for Suggs to work out on a limited basis at first, until his shoulder is strong enough to withstand contact. Browns coach Butch Davis also refuted earlier reports that Suggs has stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column.
Our View
It sounds as if the Browns will bring Suggs along slowly, which means you'll see more William Green and James Jackson this week against Dallas. Hey, if Suggs is going to miss time, it might as well be against the Ravens and Cowboys.

Packers: McKenzie returns
The News
Mike McKenzie is back in Green and Gold…for now. The disgruntled cornerback ended his holdout and met with Packers' general manager/head coach Mike Sherman Wednesday morning. He then practiced with the team. "Mike McKenzie is back here to play for the Packers, and that is where we are right now," Sherman announced in an Associated Press report. "We will take it one day at a time." McKenzie is entering the third season of a five-year, $17.1 million contract he signed with the Packers in January of 2002. The team has not re-worked his deal.
Our View
Yesterday McKenzie's agent Drew Rosenhaus said the cornerback still wanted to be traded. We'll see how this plays out, but you can bet the team is fielding trade offers now that he has shown up for work. Whether he will play this Sunday against the Bears is uncertain.

Lions: Williams ready for top receiver role
The News
Rookie Roy Williams is ready to assume the mantle of the Lions' No. 1 wide receiver. "Hopefully [opposing defenses] watch the film and see Charles [Rogers] is down and they get excited and say, 'This is going to be a cake ballgame,' " Williams told the Detroit Free Press. "I hope they do that so we can show them how we play the game on the outside." Williams displayed his physical style in week one and told the paper he's ready to do whatever it takes to help the team make up for the loss of Rogers to a season ending broken collarbone. "There's not too many physical receivers in the league," he said. "I like it when corners get physical with me. When a receiver plays tough, you're earning your game check. A lot of corners just like to cover and be the pretty boy. I like to get down and dirty."
Our View
Williams walked the walk in week one. Now we'll really get to see what he's made of when he starts facing the shut down corners and double-teams Rogers would have drawn.

Packers: Davenport nursing another hamstring injury
The News
Packers' backup running back Najeh Davenport might not be available for this week's game against the Bears because of a strained right hamstring. Davenport sustained the injury on a kickoff return during their Monday night game against the Panthers. "He is day-to-day," head coach Mike Sherman told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We won't know anything about him until later in the week."
Our View
The injury-prone Davenport missed a lot of time with hamstring problems this preseason too. It's getting to the point that Tony Fisher might just be the more reliable player to have on your roster as Ahman Green insurance.

Lions: Streets is the starter
The News
The Lions are officially listing Tai Streets as the starter at wide receiver opposite rookie Roy Williams. Az-Zhair Hakim is the third wideout on the depth chart.
Our View
Exactly how things would shake out between Streets and Hakim in the aftermath of losing Charles Rogers was unclear at first. Expect to see a lot of both players on the field, but make no mistake, Williams is the clear-cut No.1.

Seahawks: Alexander has to practice if he wants to play
The News
Seahawks' head coach Mike Holmgren said Wednesday that injured running back Shaun Alexander must practice on Friday in order to play in the week two game against the Buccaneers. Holmgren told a Seattle radio station that he intends to "go with Mo" (Maurice Morris) if Alexander doesn't practice this week, according to an ESPN.com report.
Our View
Alexander suffered a bone bruise to his knee late in the week one game against the Saints. We'll keep a close eye on this situation leading up to kickoff on Sunday. At this point, Alexander owners must handcuff him to Morris.

Vikings: Williams improving
The News
Vikings running back Moe Williams, who sprained his right ankle during their week one game, might be available for Monday night's game against the Eagles. Williams reported improvement with the ankle on Tuesday, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, saying he hopes to practice on Saturday.
Our View
The Eagles are not that good against the run, but leave Williams on your bench this week. Even if Moe manages to practice and suit up, Onterrio Smith will get the bulk of the work on Monday night.

Cardinals: Hambrick not counting carbs
The News
When running back Troy Hambrick joined the Cardinals via trade last month, he weighed in at 260 pounds, roughly 30 pounds above his listed playing weight, according to the Arizona Republic. He also forced the Raiders to deal him by skipping a practice shortly before he was traded.
Our View
Someone should inspect Troy's Gatoraid bottle, as we have a feeling he might have replaced the liquid thirst quencher with a gallon of gravy.

Ravens: Taylor will miss four games
The News
Wide receiver Travis Taylor is expected to miss the Ravens' next four games after aggravating a groin injury in the season-opening loss to the Browns. "Given he has had the history with it, it would probably be prudent to let him rest until the bye," Ravens coach Brian Billick told the Baltimore Sun.
Our View
Randy Hymes will start in Taylor's place, and the Ravens will have just four healthy wide receivers on their roster—two of them rookies. The team says they have no plans to sign a veteran free-agent wideout.

Seahawks: Palepoi released
The News
The Seahawks released defensive end Anton Palepoi on Tuesday, according to the Seattle Times. The move was made to create room on the roster for free agent cornerback Tod McBride, who signed with the team on Tuesday.
Our View
Palepoi has been a bust ever since the Seahawks selected him in the second-round of the 2002 draft. He was so disappointing that he started only one game during his two seasons with the team.

Titans: Piller has surgery
The News
Guard Zach Piller, who ruptured his left biceps in the season-opening win over Miami, had surgery Monday and will miss at least three to five months. The Titans want a second opinion before placing Piller on injured reserve and ruling him out for the entire season, and he traveled to Miami on Tuesday to see a specialist.
Our View
Rookie Jacob Bell, who saw limited action against the Dolphins, will take Piller's place in the Titan lineup.

Seahawks: McBride signed for cornerback depth
The News
The Seahawks signed free agent cornerback Tod McBride on Tuesday, according to the Seattle Times. McBride is a five-year veteran who has played for the Falcons and Packers during his career. The Falcons released McBride earlier this month after he missed some training camp time with knee tendinitis.
Our View
The Falcons attempted to re-sign McBride earlier this week, but he elected to play in Seattle, where he will be the Seahawks' fifth cornerback.

Jaguars: Taylor's drops continue
The News
Running back Fred Taylor failed to catch a single one of the four passes Byron Leftwich threw to him on Sunday, forcing the Jaguars to turn to LaBrandon Toefield as their third-down back.
Our View
Taylor is so good in the open field, it's a shame to see him sitting on the sideline when he could be turning short passes into long gains. Fred cited a lack of concentration and the proverbial running-with-the-ball-before-he-catches-it, but the fact remains: until he proves he can catch, he's going to lose playing time.

Colts: Dungy not concerted about tight end drought
The News
It's been almost a year and a half since Colts tight ends combined for just one catch, but with Indy focused on running the football against the Patriots, that's exactly what happened in the season opener. "[That's] just the way it went," Colts coach Tony Dungy told the Indianapolis Star. "When you run as many times as we did in that game, that doesn't leave you many times to throw."
Our View
Dallas Clark had the tight ends' lone grab, a short toss he stretched into a 64-yard gain. Marcus Pollard did not have a catch. If Indy continues to focus on the running game, it will impact Pollard's numbers more than the versatile Clark's.

Raiders: Line still in limbo
The News
Rookie Robert Gallery debuted as a reserve lineman for the Raiders at left guard and at right tackle on Sunday against the Steelers, and the team is still trying to figure out where to best use the second overall pick. Head coach Norv Turner credited Gallery with settling down the right side of the offense while subbing for right tackle Langston Walker against Pittsburgh.
Our View
The Raiders' offensive line did not play up to its capabilities on Sunday in either the pass or ground games, so it wouldn't surprise us to see them find a way to get Gallery into the starting lineup in week two. Given the circumstances of last week's performance, it appears that Turner would be inclined to use him at right tackle for Walker rather than at left guard for Frank Middleton.

Chargers: Foley goes off against former mates
The News
Chargers linebacker Steve Foley, cast off by the Texans after last season, had a huge day against his former team in week one, recording six tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery, and two passes defensed in the Bolts' 27-20 win.
Our View
Foley amassed some serious IDP totals last week and can likely be found on your waiver wire because he's never had more than 43 tackles in a season. We'll take a wait-and-see approach on him, as he is starting alongside Donnie Edwards in the Chargers' new 3-4 scheme.

Broncos: Holliday questionable with groin injury
The News
Defensive end Vonnie Holliday is questionable to doubtful for Sunday's game against Carolina with a groin injury suffered in the season opener, according to the Kansas City Star.
Our View
We'll keep you posted on his availability, but those who have Holliday on their IDP roster should plan on using someone else.

Saints: Ivan forces a move to San Antonio
The News
Due to the threat of Hurricane Ivan, the Saints flew to San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday and will not return to New Orleans until Friday. The team will practice at Alamo Stadium for the remainder of the week. They are scheduled to play the 49ers in New Orleans on Sunday. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Saints' officials feel that rescheduling the game is not an option, because the teams have conflicting bye weeks. Saints' officials have also said that they are not interested in moving the game to a neutral site.
Our View
This could be a major distraction to the players this week. Not only were they forced to leave town on short notice, but they'll also be concerned with how their families and homes might be affected by the storm. If the weather is severe enough, the league might step in and force the Saints to postpone the game or to play it elsewhere.

Vikings: Irvin placed on injured reserve
The News
The Vikings placed cornerback Ken Irvin on Injured Reserve on Tuesday. Irvin ruptured his Achilles' tendon during pregame warm-ups on Sunday and will undergo surgery.
Our View
Irvin's season is over and the Vikings' secondary depth is looking a little shaky unless the two veterans they signed Tuesday—Terrance Shaw and Ralph Brown—really step up. If the Vikes lose Antoine Winfield or Brian Williams, they will be in serious trouble.

Broncos: Griffin's complete package praised
The News
Effusive praise for Broncos' running back Quentin Griffin continues to pour in after his franchise-record rushing performance in week one, and not only for his success in the ground game. "Quentin did a great job of pass protection," coach Mike Shanahan told the Denver Post. "You never know for sure how a running back is going to step up and block the linebackers and possibly the defensive tackles. He doesn't shy away from anything. He's a complete back, and we love what he's doing."
Our View
After the preseason, we knew Q could handle running the football between the 20s. We learned on Sunday that he can also break the big one, handle short-yardage situations, and pass protect. That certainly sounds like a feature back to us. Fantasy owners have to temper their expectations for week two, however, as the Jaguars were the NFL's second-best rush defense a year ago and allowed the Bills only 2.6 yards per carry last Sunday.

Panthers: No timetable set for Smith
The News
Although Panthers' officials are still hopeful that wide receiver Steve Smith will be able to return in four weeks, no official timetable has been set. Smith had surgery on Tuesday after breaking his fibula the night before in a week one game against the Packers. "He's not out for the season," Panthers' head coach John Fox told the Charlotte Observer on Tuesday. "But anything after that or short of that, I don't know. But it's not season ending at this point." Meanwhile, Smith said he intends to "cry a little bit" and has "a lot of time for me to read my Bible."
Our View
As reported on Tuesday, rookie Keary Colbert will replace Smith as a starting wideout. Another rookie, Chris Gamble, will fill in for Smith as the punt returner.

Chiefs: Home sweet home
The News
After a disappointing week-one loss at Denver, the Chiefs are happy to welcome the Panthers to Arrowhead Stadium this Sunday, where Kansas City scored at least 38 points in four of their eight games in 2003. At home, quarterback Trent Green averaged 240 passing yards, threw 14 of his 24 touchdown scores, and completed an astounding 67 percent of his passes.
Our View
The Panthers afforded opposing quarterbacks some big fantasy totals on the road last year—including Peyton Manning (293 yards, one score), Brad Johnson (339, one), and even Quincy Carter (254, two). After being ravaged by Ahman Green on the ground last week, we expect them to be focused on stopping Priest Holmes and the ground game, which should only open things up more for Green. Expect big numbers from Trent and the Chiefs' passing game.

Vikings: Two corners added
The News
The Vikings signed free agent cornerbacks Terrance Shaw and Ralph Brown on Tuesday. To make room on the roster, they placed corner Ken Irvin on Injured Reserve and released safety Omare Lowe.
Our View
With Irvin out and the inexperienced Rushen Jones as their top backup, the Vikes needed to add some depth. Shaw and Brown could leapfrog Jones into the third and fourth spots on the depth chart behind starters Antoine Winfield and Brian Williams. They are hoping to re-sign Lowe to the practice squad.

Broncos: Smith fields punts
The News
For the first time since 1996, it appears that veteran wide receiver Rod Smith will be the Broncos' No. 1 punt returner this season, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Coach Mike Shanahan had intended to use rookie Triandos Luke in that spot, but Smith returned four punts for a 13.8-yard average that ranked first in the AFC in week one.
Our View
Shanahan decided that the risk of injury to Smith was outweighed by his experience and play-making ability. Rod returned one of the six punts he fielded last season for a 65-yard touchdown and gives the Broncos' special teams unit a bit more appeal in fantasy play.

Patriots: Law doing better
The News
Cornerback Ty Law, who suffered from a tight hamstring during the Patriots' week one game and was forced to alternate series after the first quarter, is reportedly feeling better, but his status for Sunday's game is uncertain. "This is football, and you're not ever going to be 100 percent," Law told the Boston Globe.
Our View
It sounds like Law will play through the injury even if it hampers him a bit. Bill Belichick, unsurprisingly, had little to say about the injury. We'll know more about this situation once the official injury report comes out.

Dolphins: Cornerback un-Surtain, Wyrick signed
The News
Patrick Surtain suffered a leg injury near the end of Saturday's 17-7 loss to the Titans, and his status is up in the air for Sunday's matchup with the Bengals. The team re-signed cornerback Jimmy Wyrick on Tuesday for depth in the secondary.
Our View
If Surtain can't go, Reggie Howard would likely start in his place, with rookie Will Poole playing the nickel and Wyrick providing depth. With defensive lineman Tim Bowens doubtful for the game, things are shaping up quite nicely for a good offensive game from the Bengals behind Carson Palmer and his Johnsons (Chad and Rudi).

Patriots: Faulk still not at practice
The News
Backup running back Kevin Faulk is still not back with the team. He continues to miss time because of the death of his mother. If he can't go, the newly-signed Rabih Abdullah would be Corey Dillon's backup.
Our View
Part of the reason the Patriots came out with so many five-receiver, no-running back sets in the opener was because they had no backup behind Corey Dillon. If Faulk misses his second straight game, you can expect something similar on Sunday against the Cardinals. It all adds up to another big day for Tom Brady and friends.

Dolphins: Bowens' absence could mean big day for Rudi
The News
The Miami Herald is reporting that defensive tackle Tim Bowens is unlikely to play on Sunday night. Citing a "source close to Bowens," the Herald said he is doubtful for the game and that he could miss two or three more weeks with the same back problems that sidelined him last Saturday.
Our View
The fantasy impact of this is that the Dolphins clearly missed their big run-stopper on the defensive line. They surrendered 182 yards on the ground to the Titans, which was the most the Dolphins have given up since 2001. Chris Brown had 100 yards on 16 carries in the first half alone. Without Bowens in the lineup, the Bengals' Rudi Johnson could be in line for a big night on Sunday.
