That SOB down the LF line tonight will somehow blow a call against Boston this series, you watch! He rates in the poop for brains category and should never be arbitrating a playoff game.
Go Sox! :smokin:

He shouldn't have tried it, not with 2 outs (Manny's an idiot), but he was safe, replays showed that.

it doesn't matter what the replay shows. There is no replay in baseball

My Joe West story! I can't believe after what I told that man that he did this AGAIN!
Back in early Sept, I was in San Diego to enjoy Petco with some friends. One is dorca on the Pads board, she and I and aspadsfan were hanging outside of Redfield's which isthe bar that has the postgame radio show for the Padres. We were drinking (no, wasn't purple thingys, that was another :naughty: night) chatting about baseball and I don't remember how we got on the subject of Joe West but I made the statement, "Red Sox fans and Met fans swear Joe West is on Steiny's payroll" and they laughed. Dorca said, "he was calling the balls and strikes tonite". Yes, there were many controversial calls that night too. What a surprise, right?
Well, we're chatting away, this guy we noticed kept coming outside to smoke but hanging over near our table. At one point he must have heard my comment, because he came over to us and said, "would you ladies like to meet Joe West"? Sure, hell ya, of course we would! :naughty: He told us that he was a former scout and he couln't help but overhear my comment about Joe and asked me if I would like to TELL him that comment. If you know me personally, then you know, I'm a very direct person. Some folks on other boards don't like that about me but I feel there's no point in not being honest. I told the guy I would.
We go inside, he introduces us, and I told him, "your friend here overhead a comment and asked if I would tell you, so I said I would. Did you know that Met fans and Red Sox fans think you're on George Steinbrenner's payroll" to which he replied to me, "if that were true, I'd be making a helluva lot more money" and laughed. The rest of the guys turned out to be umpires, except the guy that originally talked to us who was a former scout. Well, he said to his group, "I overheard these ladies' discussion, they weren't talking about manicures and pedicures, they were talking baseball and they know their stuff". We were very proud. :D
Joe West in person is a very  guy. He's very nice and all the guys really do love baseball. What we found out was that Joe really does indeed know baseball and knows the rules better than alot of umpires (according to his friend, the scout). We talked about the controversial out call on Shawn Greene the night before in AZ, cause I wanted to know why Greene was called out, cause I had watched that game and the play was one of the weirdest things I'd seen. Joe explained the rule to me.
When you meet an umpire, you change your mind about him and now even though I saw that play last night, I thought, as professional as Joe is, he just missed it. Noone is perfect. But even he said himself, "I seem to get in the middle of alot of controversial plays against the Red Sox". So he notices it, but sometimes he does make mistakes.
And maybe for everyone's sakes, he should NOT do any Red Sox/Yankee matchups, but most especially playoff ones.
That's my story...

I remember that nite, Yagsy! And it's true ..... once you meet an ump and get to talk to him about games and calls, you tend to think differently. Sure, Joe makes a lot of controversial calls (and there was that body-slam thing!) but he does indeed know the MLB rule-book better than most ....... including a lot of players!!
It was an enlightening conversation, and made me realize how difficult an ump's job really is! We have the benefit of watching the replay, while they do not. They have to make those calls split-second as they see 'em.
And as for the issue of replay in baseball .......... NNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Some calls are accurate and some are not, but that's the way it has always been .... Human!! Let's keep it that way!

Hey Rowdy, don't think I don't still suspect him of being on Steiny's payroll. I just think that when you meet the guy you realize that yes, he is a pretty  guy and he does know his rule book. I think his vision is what I question.
