Not much too post here recently, but there is minorly news worthy. It doesn't mean Omar is gone, just that he won't be on the same contract. Hopefully he'll actually give the Tribe a hoetown discount. Even if he does sign back here, I expect Johnny Peralta to get a lot of playing time.

Indians decline option on Vizquel
Team still intends to sign veteran shortstop
By Justice B. Hill / MLB.com

CLEVELAND -- The Indians declined to pick up the $5 million option on Omar Vizquel's contract, marking the next step in the on-going dialogue between Vizquel and team officials.

"This step is a mere formality and does not impact the process in re-signing Omar Vizquel," general manager Mark Shapiro said in a statement. "It does not lessen our hope or desire in bringing Omar back."

Both Vizquel and Shapiro have expressed interest in trying to work out a deal that would keep the 37-year-old Vizquel, the last link from the glory days of the 1990s, with the Indians. He has said he would like to retire as an Indian.

But with younger and cheaper shortstops like Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Phillips seemingly ready to step into Vizquel's shoes, Shapiro has said he might not be able to afford Vizquel, who made $6.25 million last season, and also land the kind of quality starting pitcher the team needs to contend in 2005.

Shapiro, who has not seen his budget for 2005 yet, has called finding a No. 2 or No. 3 starter and an experienced arm for the back end of the bullpen his highest priorities this offseason.

"I want Omar back," he said earlier this month. "But more than anything, I want this team to have the best chance to win a championship.

"I want this team to be able to fulfill our expectations from Opening Day next year of contending for a division [title]."

The Indians now must pay Vizquel, who batted .291 with seven homers and 59 RBIs this past season, a $1 million buyout.

Interesting...

Could be a couple of old timers in the SS position in new places in Omar and Larkin..

I would think they will somehow re-sign Omar...

HAHAHA, that is pretty funny.

I've heard that O has told friends that he'd accept 1.5 million for next season, so hopefully they'll get this done. I think it will hinge on whether or not they can move Matt Lawton and how much of his salary they'll have to eat.

I really want to see Omar retire here. It killed me when Thome left, you always hate seeing your favorites walk away.

I met Omar's wife in '99 and we had a long chat. One of the things that she mentioned was that if she couldn't live in her hometown of Seattle (where Omar started) then for sure they wanted to stay in Cleveland. She said that Cleveland fans are the best baseball fans and how much they enjoy the city of Cleveland. Very family oriented. I can't imagine them moving anyplace else.

Just my two cents. Of course alot has happened since '99 but that was directly from the Vizquel family.

That's so cool that you got to talk with her. And in every interview I've heard/read with him, he's echoed those same statements. The only team he said he'd approve a trade to was Seattle. So I know he wants to stay here, hopefully the management wants him to stay as well.

:rotf: Yeah, she was the nicest. She introduced me to all the Cleveland wives, Thome's wife (newly married at the time), Steve Reed's wife, Jaret Wright's girlfriend (poor thing was so upset, as per usual, Sox fans were brutal on him), some others I can't remember. But she and I talked the most. She was fascinated that I was at the playoff game (Game 3 '99 ALDS playoff game where Pedro's brother pitched) when I wasn't specifically a fan of either team. I wanted at the time for the Indians to win because I was a NY AL team fan at the time and the INdians of that season got clobbered by that team. She agreed, that the Indians just couldn't seem to play that team well.

It was a great conversation. We'd be in the middle of something, she was sitting behind me so I had to turn around to talk to her, and when Omar came up at one point, struck out, she'd yell, "Omar, ya bum" :rotf: and come back to the conversation. She's a huge Supersonics fan and never got tired of them but baseball, she said, she didn't make it to the park as often because it was always there. I told her, I wouldn't miss a single game including road trips but she said that with kids (they had three at the time) it was far more difficult which made perfect sense.

It was a very interesting conversation, getting a baseball wife's perspective. When she introduced herself, I asked her, "is Omar as nice in person as he appears to be" and she just gushed over how wonderful he was. I thought that was adorable!!! :)

That's a great story. That's hilarious that she heckles her own husband :D

How'd you get so lucky as to get tickets in the wives section?

Especially at Fenway, to get tickets it's horrible at any given time but playoff time is near impossible...that is if you do one thing; call the same day that the game is held or maybe day before. What happens is that season ticket holders release tickets or sell back to the Sox and the Sox resell them. A friend of mine called up that day got 4 tickets and called me to ask me to go with him. He was the one that got the tix, so I can't say I did. :D It just happen that the tickets that day were literally behind home plate in the visitor's ticket section.

Oh, and Omar's wife (can't remember her name right now) did heckle him not once but twice. She was very cute, I just remembered too, I called her on one time, saying she shouldn't call him a name. Don't remember what that name was... :rotf: She said she could do that to him and she said that he also hears her when she does that. :rotf:
