Stephenson, who had Tommy John elbow surgery last April, is throwing hard and freely. Stephenson, a 16-game winner in 2000, is hopeful of regaining a spot in the rotation by opening day, although the cautious Cardinals brass want him to take it slowly. Stephenson might start the season in Florida until he can be more ready. (Rick Hummel/TSN)
Fantasy Spin: He's a big risk but could be solid if he earns a spot in the rotation. We'll have a better idea of his status as the season approaches.

The Cards have three capable men who are trying for the spot, all can be solid an even pretty effective. With Darryl Kile's surgery, however, the Cards may not have the kind of depth they'll hope for, and I predict that a lot of guys will share time similar to how the bullpen did last year... It will be much different from 2000 when the Cards only had 5 different pitchers start games until a month or so after the all star break.

That the Cards will be very cautious with Garrett though ala Morris. No sense rushing him unless the situation turns desperate.

Andy Benes could turn out useful. The Cards are stuck with his contract so if he can be stable (which isn't out of the question) he could take some pressure off as well.
