MIAMI (AP) -- The Florida Marlins on Tuesday hired pitching coach Mark Wiley and bullpen coach Harry Dunlop to serve on manager Jack McKeon's staff next season.

Wiley has served as pitching coach for 14 seasons with three other major league clubs, most recently Baltimore. The Orioles reassigned him to their scouting staff in June after his pitchers combined to top the league in walks and ERA.

Wiley was Cleveland's pitching coach during the Indians' World Series trips in 1995 and 1997.

Dunlop, 71, worked his last coaching job in 1999, when he was Cincinnati's third-base coach -- under McKeon. He was a scout for the New York Mets in 2001.

The Marlins still have an opening for a bench coach. McKeon said last week the job has been offered to Larry Bowa, who was fired as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies last month.

I am curious, why are all the coaches being replaced? I thought the pitching coach, Larry Rothschild was the pitching coach. Did he get fired?

yagsy: Rothschild used to be the Marlins pitching coach many moons ago. Then, he managed the Devil Rays for quite awhile. He is currently the Cubs pitching coach right now. Wayne Rosenthal was the guy that got fired by the Marlins. I thought that was interesting. He did a very good job with the young pitchers.

Mark Wiley is a lousy pitching coach. If he was that great, why didn't the Mariners hire him as their pitching coach or even a bullpen coach.

This is also evidenced by the floundering around by the young pitching staff of the Orioles.......and one Sid Ponson.... and the major change in them and their numbers when they let Wiley go and hired Ray Miller.

The pitchers seemed to be more confused by Wiley than centered and assured.

Miller actually make a big difference with the Orioles pitchers when he was hired. The pitchers particularly Ponson and Cabera threw lot of strikes and they worked fast. It's no coincidence that the Orioles finished September well unlike the last two years.

:duh: Rosenthal was who I was thinking of anyway. Thanks Timberwolf for the correction. So does anyone know WHY Rosenthal was fired?

I have no idea, Yagsy. I am really suprised too. He did a good job over in Florida. I guess there was a conflict with him and management. That has to be the reason.
