Okay here is the deal. A very established NL only draft will have 13 or possibly even 14 teams (very deep). Very competitive, sure there are 2 or 3 fish but everyone else knows their game so heated battle is expected. It is a standard 4x4 roto scoring.

The idea: Punt batting average. This is one of the closest categories each year and people can move fluidly in this category and lets face it a lot of this one is left to chance! My idea is to pick up guys who can give me the HR RBI and SB numbers but who you really wouldnt wanna pay top dollar for --examples (Damien Jackson, Pokey Reese, K. Young, J Burnitz, T. Hundley, even studs like A. Jones and P. Wilson)....this means I can load up on the 3 other categories by getting guys who have downside for other people (that .220 average) but have no downside for me since I am aiming for last in BA...this should also leave me some extra money to make sure I get a good pitching staff

The downside to this strategy is there will no turning back after draft day....

Thoughts? Comments? Ever seen it tried?

Its a fantastic idea, in that you get extra value for your dollar. Todd Hundley is devalued because he kills BA, so you get all the power and the pain doesn't hurt.

I actually tried the reverse last year, which has gained the name, "Sweeney Plan". I was saddled with a poor keeper list in a strong league, so I decided to punt BOTH HR and RBI. I only picked up high batting average and/or speed guys (Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre, Bill Mueller) or guys who would not hurt my batting average by having low playing time. Would've worked better if Castillo had batted .330 and if my pitching staff had not been "anchored" by Kevin Millwood and Kevin Brown, but even with those problems, I finished in the money, although not in first.

The best part is that if its not a keeper league, your strategy could at worst cost you one year. If you win the championship, then you can brag on the size of your, um, guts, and your brilliance. If you lose, then you can say you play for fun and you like to try out new strategies!

Good luck!
