Prospects pick it up lately in AFL
Lindstrom, Hietpas, Lydon post impressive numbers
By Kevin T. Czerwinski / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Matt Lindstrom has an opportunity to showcase himself a bit during the Arizona Fall League season and until recently, he hadn't taken advantage of the opportunity.

The young right-hander went 1-0 in a pair of games this week for the Peoria Saguaros, lowering his ERA from 6.75 to 4.76 in the process. The Ricks Junior College product figures to start the 2005 season at Class A Port St. Lucie and perhaps see time in Double-A Binghamton after going 8-7 with a 3.52 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) for Class A Capital City and St. Lucie last year.

Lindstrom has eight strikeouts in 11 innings and has surrendered only seven hits.

Southpaw reliever Royce Ring saw action in three games. Though Ring didn't earn a decision, his ERA rose from 4.22 to 5.54. Right-hander Brian Bannister didn't pitch this week and remains 2-0 with a 3.77 ERA.

Catcher Joe Hietpas remained hot, going 3-for-8 to boost his average to .344. He has three RBIs, but it's his defensive prowess that will earn him a look from the parent club during Spring Training.

Outfielder Wayne Lydon also picked up his play this week, raising his average from .239 to .292, stealing five bases in the process to raise his total to 12 in 23 games. He swiped 65 bases this season with Binghamton, falling just short of Esix Snead's club mark.

Infielder Chase Lambin saw his average shoot to .226, up from .190 a week ago, while Brett Harper continued to cool off. His average dropped from .333 to .279.

Harper, a 45th-round pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, earned the 2004 Sterling Award, given to the Most Valuable Player on New York's Florida State League affiliate in Port St. Lucie. The big first baseman hit .350 with nine homers and 55 RBIs in 60 games, and collected a hit in 30 of 33 games from April 20 to May 20.
