Preliminary Strategy...

First few rounds, bid people up near value to prevent a bargain from slipping through. Try to sneak some undervalued players through as my call outs.

Don't worry about positions, don't follow trends, set them.

My first call out was a player I liked, so in round 2, I will go with players likely to be overvalued - new Rockies like Agbayani and Zeile.

Baum Threat and KingFish will be saving their money until the end.

BLSP will quickly be in the $1 rounds and is not a factor for bargain-hunting, but he'll have a heck of a foundation with Sosa, Vlad and Maddux!

Strickland was the biggest surprise. I expected low-20s for a second-tier closer, but some people really don't want the Expos closer! In a 4X4, closers should be more valuable. I may try to sneak off with another cheap middle-tier closer soon, and guarantee a top-3 in saves (assuming every team picks up one closer) while also helping my whip/era slightly....

Bull went big after the studs, but essentially no-bid everyone else.

BID LIST FOR ROUND 3:
Strategy: A lot of money flew out last round. I calculate DEFLATION to be around $77 on hitters and $66 extra on pitchers. 298 for 232 of value on pitchers and 403 on 326 value on hitters. So there is 2677 to spend on 2812 of ability. So I should be able to reduce my bids by about 8%.

Now, I really am looking for bargains. I am going to bid at what I feel is 65-85% of the player value just to make sure the winning bid is at least near what I think the player’s value is… And if I win some players, then I have some minor bargains. Who I win will determine my strategy in later rounds.

Hernandez,Carlos P HOU (METS*2) $9 – future stud.
Castillo,Luis 2B FLA (AMAG) $23 – try to sneak a cheap speedster.
Goodwin,Tom OF LA (GOLD) $2 – cheap steals
Farnsworth,Kyle P CHC (BLSP) $7 – the anointed future closer
Ramirez,Aramis 3B PIT (GHAS) $21 – future stud
Bagwell,Jeff 1B HOU (RSOX) $30 – he’ll go higher, but if he don’t steal…
Loduca,Paul C LA (BAUM) $22 – he has arrived
Vaughn,Mo 1B NYM (METS) $11 – won’t revert to form
Oswalt,Roy P HOU (BULL) $22 – I’d go higher, but sophomores at Enron…
Burroughs,Sean 3B SD (OMG6) $14 – worth more in a keeper league
Petrick,Ben C COL (GEEK) $6 – I think he’ll win the job
Jones,Chipper 3B ATL (DOGG) $33 – simply price enforcing
Cedeno,Roger OF NYM (USCG) $17 – cheap speed
Green,Shawn OF LA (FISH) $ 37 - stud

BID LIST FOR ROUND 4:
Strategy: More money flew out last round. I calculate DEFLATION to be around $77 on hitters and $66 extra on pitchers. 298 for 232 of value on pitchers and 403 on 326 value on hitters. So there is 2319 to spend on 2537 of ability. So I should be able to reduce my bids by about 10%.

Now, I really am looking for bargains. I am going to bid at what I feel is 65-85% of the player value just to make sure the winning bid is at least near what I think the player’s value is… And if I win some players, then I have some minor bargains. Who I win will determine my strategy in later rounds.

Dunn,Adam OF CIN (BLSP) $24 – Monster rookie season, but hasn’t faced anyone twice.
Sheffield,Gary OF ATL (GHAS) $36 – Price enforcing, but I’d be happy with him here.
Lopez,Javy C ATL (BAUM) $12 – catchers going quick
Beckett,Josh P FLA (RSOX) $14 – likely to be overpriced
Floyd,Cliff OF FLA (METS) $37 – Has he kicked the injury bug? I say yes.
Dempster,Ryan P FLA (BULL) $11 – should bounce back
Rollins,Jimmy SS PHI (OMG6) $18 - speed
Zeile,Todd 1B COL (GEEK) $9 – I’ll take the 3B at Coors
Griffey,Ken OF CIN (DOGG) $27 – won’t be running again
Klesko,Ryan 1B SD (USCG) $32 – is speed for real
Izturis,Cesar SS LA (FISH) $6 – cheap steals
Alou,Moises OF CHC (AMAG) $21 – already gimpy
Young,Kevin 1B PIT (GOLD) $9 – don’t really want him

BID LIST FOR ROUND 5:
Strategy: More money flew out last round. Another 327 spent to acquire 232 worth of talent. So there is 1992 to spend on 2305 of ability. So I should be able to reduce my bids by about 12%.

Picked up 1B and an OF, but spent big bucks. Someone has to keep BAUM honest, so I’ll play it careful here… Only the big OF are being bid up near value.

Duckworth,Brandon P PHI (RSOX) - $10
Hundley,Todd C CHC (BAUM) - $7
Trammell,Bubba OF SD (METS) - $10
Burnett,A.J. P FLA (BULL) - $4
Anderson,Marlon 2B PHI (OMG6) - $11
Wagner,Billy P HOU (GEEK) - $26
Furcal,Rafael SS ATL (DOGG) - $17
Bonds,Barry OF SF (USCG) - $42
Jiminez,D’Angelo SS SD (FISH) - $11
Patterson,Corey OF CHC (AMAG) - $9
Zaun,Gregg C HOU (GOLD) – $2
Gonzalez,Luis OF ARI (BLSP) - $32
Berkman,Lance OF HOU (GHAS) - $33

CALL OUT LIST FOR ROUND 6:
More closers…
Armando Benitez
John Smoltz
Danny Graves
Trevor Hoffman

BID LIST FOR ROUND 6:
Strategy: Last round was more reasonable, but bargains aren’t coming yet. Another 265 spent to acquire 220 worth of talent. So there is 1727 to spend on 2085 of ability. So I should be able to reduce my bids by about 17%.

My roster is (with my value in parenthesis)
1B Ryan Klesko $31 (34)
OF Cliff Floyd $31 (35)
CL Scott Strickland $21 (24)

Lets try one more round of price-enforcing at near 90%, then battle it out for bargains. Bidding on Wagner was light, so it may also be light on these closers, so I’ll keep my bids under 30, as I really want my second closer to be a cheap guy.

Nen,Robb P SF (METS) - $29. Price enforcing the best closer (35)
Kim,Byung-Hung P ARI (BULL) $21. Maybe I can sneak off another Strickland here. (25)
Drew,J.D. OF STL (OMG6) $29. Big bat (33)
Benitez,Armando P NYY (GEEK) $29. Another big-time closer (34)
Edmonds,Jim OF STL (DOGG) $21. Usually overbid (23)
Rodriguez,Felix P SF (USCG) - $6. The best setup man in show business (9)
Nevin,Phil 3B SD (FISH) $28 – love to have him (29)
Smoltz,John P ATL (AMAG) $26 – risky closer but I think he’ll be great (33)
Lampkin,Tom C SD (GOLD) $0 – Nice 2nd catcher for $1
Benson,Kris P PIT (BLSP) $0 – In a keeper league, certainly, but not here.
Giles,Brian OF PIT (GHAS) $29. Who knows, he might slip (31)
Hoffman,Trevor P SD (RSOX) $29. Defines the term stud closer (34)
Casey,Sean 1B CIN (BAUM) - $22. Purely price-enforcing to my value.

If I get a closer, reduce bid on remaining closers by $5

CALL OUT LIST FOR ROUND 7:

IF YOU ARE COMPETING IN THE AUCTION DO NOT READ THIS UNTIL AFTER THE AUCTION

BID LIST FOR ROUND 7:
Strategy: More money went out, and some bargains were found. Smoltz at $25 is pretty sweet, since I valued him at $33. Another 320 spent to acquire 312 worth of talent. So there is 1407 to spend on 1773 of ability. So I should be able to reduce my bids by about 20%.

My roster is (with my value in parenthesis)
1B Ryan Klesko $31 (34)
OF Cliff Floyd $31 (35)
CL Scott Strickland $21 (24)
CL John Smoltz $25 (33)

I now have closers, and two 4-category guys. I need to look at who is left at key positions, and I need to evaluate my competition. So I’m not rushing my bids out this time, and will just turn my email off…

Here are the top players left at each position…

BAUM: 243 – 26 bids on closers, 221-25 on stud hitters
METS: 206 – new ownership is looking for bargains 17 on studs
BULL: 143 – Got closer Benitez – 37 on closer, 36 on hitter.
GOLD: 148 – bid 31-33 on closers and did not get! 26-31 on hitting studs
USCG: 155 – most bids around 27-28 for OF, Closer
BLSP: 112 – hasn’t spent since Round 1. Bid 27 on Giles, 20 on closer
DOGG: 93 – Many bids for CLOSER around 30.
AMAG: 78 – Saving money, bid 22 on stud hitters, 13 on closers

That said, here’s our strategy for Round 7. Only closer is Graves. Do not want under any circumstance, assuming bidding will be high. Stud hitters are Jones and Alomar. Price enforce these to the 30’s, but assume/hope I won’t get. I love Pierre, but will only go to high 20’s on him. Glavine, Wood and Estes will go for more than I think they are worth, so I can bid near value to price enforce. Elarton and Coggin are no-bids. Don’t like Larkin or Bell. Might slip Stevens through under the (18) I value him at. Johnson is last double digit catcher, but he will be too much for me.

Coggin,David P PHI (OMG6) $0
Graves,Danny P CIN (GEEK) $0
Pierre,Juan OF COL (DOGG) $28
Elarton,Scott P COL (USCG) $0

BID LIST FOR ROUND 8:
Strategy: I hoped to get Pierre, Cjohnson, and Stevens last round. Only got Stevens <sigh>.

For some reason, owners seemed to panic last round and spent WAY more on players then they are worth. Only, three bargains were found. Pierre, Graves, and Stevens. And the prices on Larkin, Glavine, Estes, and Wood all seemed very excessive. Another 243 spent to acquire 168 worth of talent. So there is 1165 to spend on 1605 of ability. So I should be able to reduce my bids by almost 30!

My roster is (with my value in parenthesis)
1B Ryan Klesko $31 (34) - will be OF eligible in season so make UT a CI.
CI Lee Stevens $13 (14)

Strategy for Round 8.
I think Ortiz is gonna have a monster year. DOGG called out Pierre last round and bid big on him and may do the same here on Ortiz. Daal,Clement are $3 tops. Padilla is a nice sleeper with Mesa only blocking him.
Would love to have Ortiz,Wilson,Lieber or Person out of this group, but I’m going to get them only if they are below the values I have for them.

I really like Javier Vazquez, so I’m going 20+ on him. I also really like Brian Tollberg, but I may limit my $ amount there. I’m not big on Ward or Schmidt, but I think they will go high, and I’m gonna take a chance and price enforce high – this could hurt me if I get stuck with them, but what the hey…
Wiki would be a nice catcher to get. Jiminez, Grace, and Tatis I will take if they are big bargains.

Ideally, if I get beat on the players I want, it puts LARGE dent in the owners remaining bank account.

BAUM $135 – OF,CI,UT (no 3B,OF)
Let him get Jordan
GEEK $105 – a 1B costs the UT slot – don’t do it.
METS $39 (max 33) 3 OF, UT, 3 P
BLSP $44 (max 31)
USCG $44 (max 31)
AMAG $35 (max 28) – no P
BULL $38 (max 27) – no CI,UT
GOLD $25 (max 16) – no MI,UT

Strategy for 13
Well someone finally called out Rolen. I’m assuming Baum wants him bad. I value him at $29 (and I’m sure others value him higher).
If I bid $28, then only two teams can get him, me or BAUM
But then, I don’t get a big bargain. Oh well, I’m goin 28

Shaw I would like, but since this ain’t a keeper league, I think I’ll get the more sure Chad Fox shortly.

No other pitcher here interests me, nor do the scrubinis.

DLee – I originally called him out in hopes of locking BAUM out of CI for the
Rolen bidding. But since Rolen came out first, the strategy backfired, and now he will be a top CI remaining for my UT slot. Still, I can keep the UT slot for several people, so I will just price enforce

Shaw – I was gonna take him as a late $2 guy, but with Chad Fox still available, I’ll pass.

Glanville - This would lock BAUM out of OF, so I’m gonna let him have Glanville, whose skills are declining.

Womack – I need some speed, so I will at the least price enforce him, assume BAUM going similar to Eric Young with a $17 bid, so I will go $14

I’ve got $45 to spend on 5 hitters and 6 pitchers. I need to bleed more money out. Plenty of decent outfielders out there.

Anyone with a max bid > $1 is now interesting
BAUM $75 Needs: P-4,C-2,SS,CI,UT – get him to take a UT and he’s out of my OF. He will get the pitchers he wants. He’s making a mistake, though by not just getting the players he wants, and is instead trying to get them at low prices. Cost him Ausmus. Not a keeper league so price doesn’t matter.
USCG (MAX:12) $22 Needs: P-4,SS,3B,MI,CI,OF-2,UT – will be around

Looks like my strategy should be to get the hitters I want, wait for BAUM to take his pitchers, and then bid $2-4 on pitchers I want.

Strategy for 15
In 14, picked up stud SS Cabrera and staff ace Ortiz. But money is spent.
In this round, I’d love to get any of Ochoa, Hammonds, Uribe, Burrell, but I won’t go to high on any of these. In fact, I will not bid on Ochoa in hopes that BAUM gets him and locks him out of other Ofs. Uribe would cost me my UT slot, but still would love to have him.

Keep letting BAUM get whoever he wants. He will have a LOT of money left over.

BAUM can’t get my OFs or a 2B, so pick them off one by one.
AMAG(max=13) has caused me much grief, and may hurt me on my quest for Renteria.
He can’t bid on Lowell. Needs SS,MI,OF only
BLSP (Max=18) Can’t get pitchers
METS (Max=5) needs a P, OF, hitter
USCG (Max=6) needs everything
I own tiebreak over every team but METS. So bid 6 on hitter if I want them.

Spend my money to get the hitters I want (5 @ $6 apiece). Use $3 apiece on pitchers I want.

Strategy for 16

I think Fox is only a half-closer anyone and 13 is too much. If I get him for that, I’m screwed. In a REAL auction I would NOT do this, but since this one is for grins… why not?
