He's looking for a 5 year deal at 55 million with a no-trade clause.

I'll dig up the link and post it here.

Now the question is: is he worth 11 million a year? What was his previous salary?

I wouldn't do it. I know he is the heart of that team, but you cannot afford to give any catcher five years guaranteed. That goes double for one that is past thirty. Eleven million a season also seems excessive. I would spread that money around to the pitching staff (lower part of rotation)

how about 3 yrs., 30 mil, and throw in the no-trade clause he wants? i think he's worth that. JMO

3 years. $36 mill. Not a cent more. His offense can easily be replaced.

I think Doug Mirabelli, if playing full-time, can quite easily exceed Varitek's offensive numbers.

no...that isn't going to happen. Mirabelli puts up the good numbers because he doesn't play very often. Pitchers will not pay as much attention to replacement players than to the stars, like Varitek, or Manny. They throw him fastballs, to try and get an out, and he just bolts them out of the yard. Once he becomes a full time player, pitchers will figure him out, and start throwing him pitches he cannot pull over the fence. Then he will be a .250 hitter at most.
