NEW YORK (AP) -- Kris Benson and Al Leiter are likely to be back with the New York Mets next season.

Benson and the Mets closed in Friday on a three-year deal worth about $22.5 million, a baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations said on the condition of anonymity.

Leiter and New York were nearing agreement on a one-year contract worth $4 million to $5 million plus performance bonuses, the official said.

Benson was acquired by New York from Pittsburgh on July 30 along with infielder Jeff Keppinger for infielder Ty Wigginton, right-fielder Matt Peterson and infielder Jose Bautista. Benson, a 30-year-old right-hander, went 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 11 starts with the Mets and 12-12 with a 4.31 ERA overall.

Talks with his agent, Gregg Clifton, began soon after the trade.

``We've made tremendous progress over the last 48 hours, and we're getting within range where it's pretty much conceivable that we'll get a deal done,'' Clifton said.

Leiter, a 39-year-old left-hander, has pitched with the Mets for the past seven seasons and possibly could have interested the Yankees. After he went 10-8 with a 3.21 ERA in 30 starts last season, the Mets declined his $10.2 million option and opted to pay a $2.1 million buyout.

``We've had continuing conversations with the Mets,'' his agent, Alan Hendricks, said Friday.

I'm glad Benson is about to be signed. I think it's a fair contract, even on the generous side.

I'm basically glad that Al will be back. He's a great clubhouse guy and will be a great mentor to the younger arms. I just think $5 mil plus bonuses is a bit high for a #4 guy.

A little over 7 per for a #4 pitcher = once again overpaying for mediocrity when there are pitchers on th emarket with more upside.

As for Al, 4 - 5 million is ridiculous for a 39 year old pitcher who can't avoid a 3-2 count on every hitter and can't get past 5 innings. Let him go...for God's sake.

Leiter is a 39 year old pitcher that is pretty darn good... He won 10 games and should have won about 15 and his hits to IP were fantastic:thumbsup:

138-hits to 173-IP and a good 3.21 era...

Is it confirmed that Leiter is our #4?? I see him as a #3 behind Glavine and Benson... I think Trachsel should be #4...

It depends on which Al shows up. He could be either a 3 *or* a 4. I tend to find Trax more reliable. Unless we get another arm, and Al could drop down to a 5.

But another thread talks about him shopping himself.

Al aint no 3-5 starter. He's a reliable #2. Trax is the 5 with Zambrano or Benson 3-4. Benson is being almost pathethicly overpaid. 22 mil for a guy who has yet to even show that he is half as good as they say. Benson isn't anything sepical. He isn't anywhere near anything speical, just another .500 pitcher.

Al is NOT a #2. a #2 goes beyond 6 innings routinely.

i thought this was going to say mets close in on sosa trade! :D lol j/k

Vinnie, Vinnie, Vinnie, my young friend. Al Leiter is no longer a #2 starter. His best years are behind him. Whereas Benson does indeed need to prove himself, his youth bumps Al down a notch or two. The aging Glavine ended the season on a loan note, but for the moment he's still our ace. Trax is #2 then Benson, unless he proves himself well enough to overtake the 2 spot and drop Trachsel down to 3. Then comes Leiter, unless we get ourselves another arm.

Hey, I'd be quite happy with a team who's weakest link is Leiter in the 5 spot!
