Red Sox announce 2005 Pawtucket coaching staff
Ron Johnson promoted to Triple-A manager; Pitching coach Mike Griffin and hitting coach Mark Budaska to return
BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today announced their 2005 Triple-A Pawtucket coaching staff. Ron Johnson will serve as manager of the club after leading Boston's Double-A affiliate each of the last three seasons, while pitching coach Mike Griffin and hitting coach Mark Budaska return to their respective positions. Director of Player Development Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Ron Johnson, who in 2005 begins his 28th season in professional baseball and his 14th straight as a manager, joined the Red Sox organization in 2000 as manager of Single-A Sarasota, where he spent two seasons before moving to Double-A Trenton in 2002 and Double-A Portland each of the last two years. He previously has managed two seasons at Triple-A, guiding Kansas City's Omaha affiliate in 1998-99, including a first-place finish in the Pacific Coast League's Central Division with an 81-60 mark in 1999. Portland went 72-70 and finished third in the Eastern League's North Division in 2003 and went 69-73 and tied for fourth in 2004.
The 48-year old native of Wichita, KS began his managerial career in 1992 and spent eight seasons as a skipper in the Kansas City organization before moving to the Red Sox. In his first campaign as manager, he guided Single-A Baseball City to a playoff berth in the Florida State League. In 1995, Johnson was named the Texas League Manager of the Year when he led Double-A Wichita to a 72-64 record and a first-place finish in the second-half of the season. Johnson has guided his clubs to a 904-903 (.50028) mark in his 13 years at the helm.
Mike Griffin returns for his third season at Pawtucket, his seventh in the Red Sox organization and his 13th as a minor league pitching coach. Griffin spent four seasons as pitching coach at Double-A Trenton (1999-2002) after nine years in the Reds' organization as a minor league pitching coach and instructor. As a pitching coach in the Cincinnati chain, Griffin helped four of his six clubs capture league championships. The 47-year-old helped Pawtucket to a division title and Governor's Cup appearance in 2003.
Mark Budaska begins his third season in the Red Sox organization, his second as Pawtucket's hitting coach. He served as hitting coach at Double-A Portland in 2002. In 2001, Budaska was the hitting coach for Anaheim's Double-A Little Rock affiliate that won the Texas League Championship. The 51-year-old was a hitting coach and first base coach in Taiwan from 1998-2000.
