Lydon opening eyes with hot hitting
Outfielder improves average as AFL season ends
By Kevin T. Czerwinski / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Wayne Lydon is making a run at opening some eyes this month as the Arizona Fall League draws to a close.
The speedy outfielder turned his season around for the Peoria Saguaros. Lydon finished with a .284 average after hitting just .239 two weeks ago. He led the team with 14 steals, and is trying to prove he is ready to make the jump to the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk.
Lydon swiped 65 bases this season with Double-A Binghamton, falling just short of Esix Snead's club mark. A groin injury cost him time at the end of the season. Otherwise, the mark would have been his.
Catcher Joe Hietpas saw his average drop from .326 to .313, while infielder Chase Lambin hit .227. First baseman Brett Harper was hitting .333 two weeks ago, but finished at .255 after struggling the last two weeks.
Harper, a 45th-round pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, earned the 2004 Sterling Award, given to the Most Valuable Player on New York's Florida State League affiliate in Port St. Lucie. The big first baseman hit .350 with nine homers and 55 RBIs in 60 games, and collected a hit in 30 of 33 games from April 20 to May 20.
Southpaw reliever Royce Ring, the cornerstone of the deal that sent Roberto Alomar to the White Sox in 2003, lowered his ERA from 5.65 to 5.28. Right-hander Matt Lindstrom pitched a scoreless third of an inning this week, while starter Brian Bannister didn't pitch.
