Manny Parra struck out a Tennessee hitter Friday on such a nasty pitch, the ball hit the dirt. And then eluded catcher Jeff Winchester. And the batter reached. Parra was temporarily fazed by the play and yielded a pair of runs in the inning. Still, said pitching coach Rich Sauveur, "He had one bad pitch. He's thrown the ball the last three games in a row. I'm very proud of the kid. Things weren't going well for him early, but he's worked hard on improving. He'd done just that.'' ... Parra has allowed six earned runs in his last 20 innings of work, striking out 19. But he is 1-1 with one no-decision for that time.

Double-A Huntsville pitchers Manny Parra and Dennis Sarfate have spent more time than they'd like of late in the training room.

Parra missed a start on Tuesday because of lingering discomfort in his left shoulder, a problem that dates to last season. Parra was in Milwaukee for an MRI earlier this season but, according to player development director Reid Nichols, doctors saw only normal wear.

"Every pitcher has a little wear and tear in there. We'll know more once the doctors have a chance to look at it and we can all sit down," Nichols said. "There's something minor in there. He's been able to pitch with it so far and it doesn't appear to be serious."

Parra is 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA this season. He is one of the Brewers' top left-handed pitching prospects.

Sarfate, who is 7-5 with a 3.62 ERA in 17 starts, left his last start after walking a hitter to open the seventh inning.

"It's a first-time thing," Nichols said. "It's not serious."

Money and the Huntsville club will be without the services of left-handed pitching prospect Manny Parra for the rest of the season. Parra has been sent to extended spring camp in Arizona, where the club is trying to decide whether his ailing shoulder needs surgery.

"This has been nagging him the past couple of years," Money said. "We need to find out what the problem is. They're going to decide which way they want to go."

Money confirmed that Double-A starter Manny Parra's season is over. The left-hander, who has experienced ongoing shoulder soreness, was sent to Arizona and doctors are trying to determine the source of soreness. Parra was 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched.

"He went back there where the weather's warm, and we'll just see what's going on," Money said. "He's back in Arizona and they'll decide which way they want to go with him."

Class AA Huntsville left-hander Manny Parra, considered one of the Brewers' better pitching prospects, was declared done for the season several weeks ago and underwent shoulder surgery Thursday. The procedure was performed by Brewers doctor William Raasch.

"There was some fraying in the labrum, but it wasn't anything structural," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "They said he should be able to start throwing again on Nov. 1 and then be ready for spring training."

Parra, who was a "draft and follow" player, was chosen in the 26th round in 2001, had a standout season for American River Junior College in California and was given a $1.55 million signing bonus.

In 16 starts for Huntsville, Parra went 5-6 with a 3.96 earned run average. He worked 91 innings and allowed 111 hits. He walked 21 batters and struck out 86.

Pitching prospect Manny Parra is ramping up his rehabilitation and hopes to resume throwing early next week.

Parra, one of the team's top left-handed prospects, has not thrown a baseball since the second week in January but is scheduled to see Dr. William Raasch on Saturday. Parra hopes Raasch gives the go-ahead to resume workouts.

"It's kind of hard right now because we're out there doing [fielding] drills and I'm the only one not throwing," Parra said. "But at the same time, I have to remember that this way is probably smarter."

He can't throw. He can't lift weights. He couldn't even join roommate and fellow pitching prospect Mike Jones for a round of golf Tuesday.

Parra was limited to 16 starts at Double-A Huntsville last season and underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery last August. He had been throwing successfully before the Major League Baseball Players Association Rookie Career Development Program in mid-January. But after resuming workouts, Parra felt some discomfort in his shoulder and was shut down.

"We're just letting things calm down," he said. "When I get back throwing, my goal is to be totally healthy for a whole season -- no setbacks."

Highly-regarded left-hander Manny Parra, sidelined with a sore shoulder, has moved over to the Minor League complex at Maryvale Baseball Park.

"He saw the doctor yesterday and there is no concern," assistant general manager Gord Ash said. "But he can't participate in the [Major League] program right now, and with the crowded conditions there is no sense in him being here."
