Well it's this time of year again. Time to nominate a sports figure for the Turkey of the Year. I was inspired to do this award last year from reading Patrick Reusse's Turkey of the Year in the Star-Tribune on Thanksgiving Day. Last year, Kobe and Shaq won the first annual Turkey of the Year from me.
My Turkey of the Year for 2004 is that scumbag piece of filth, Bruce Ratner. I did not like him when I heard about him last summer when he talked about plans of moving the Nets to New York City. Being a Jersey guy, I found this to be offensive. Where was he when the Nets stunk? Why didn't he brought the team and moved to NY then? Why buy it when the team was good? That pissed me off to no end and I could not fanthom rooting for a team that was going to move. I was hoping that he would somehow lose that bid. I did lot of praying over the months, but the dark day and really a sad day came in January when Ratner was awarded the franchise over Charlie Kushner. That really got me angry and upset. I said to myself I was not going to root for that guy when he brought the Nets and I was true to my word as I stopped rooting for the Nets in January.
What Ratner has done is a disgrace. Bad enough he is moving the team with the fanbase starting to grow, but to go strip this team is even more offensive. To pissed your two stars off is not the way to go. For him to admit publicly that he would trade Jason Kidd is very offensive and insulting after what Kidd has done to this Nets franchise. To go say screw you to the fans in New Jersey by dismantling the team and offer the fans a bad team while he is waiting his move to Brooklyn is simply despicable.
I hope Ratner and NBA do New Jersey and the franchise a favor and move the Nets to Long Island while the arena in Brooklyn is being built. There is no sense keeping the Nets in NJ where the team is playing in an empty arena every night. Start building your fanbase in Brooklyn right now by moving to Nassau Collisseum. NJESA should agree on a buyout for the Nets and end the lease of that contract.
Ratner is never about winning and I doubt he will ever be about winning. I am amazed Thorn wants to be surrounded with this loser, Ratner after that piece of filth destroyed Thorn's good work with the Nets.
Here's hoping the Ratner era is a disaster not only just now, but especially when they go to Brooklyn.
Happy Thanksgiving, folks
