FORMER PHILLIE MARTY BYSTROM JOINS R-PHILS BROADCAST TEAM
GPU Stadium– Marty Bystrom, a key component of the Philadelphia Phillies 1980 run to a World Series title, will join Steve Degler in the R-Phils television booth as the color-analyst for the team’s 12-home games that will be broadcast on CN8 in 2002.* Four road games are also scheduled to be televised to bring the season package to 16 games.*
*“I’m excited to be involved in baseball in this capacity,” said Bystrom.* “It’s going to great to work along side Steve and be part of one the nation’s best minor league franchises. “*
Bystrom’s Major League career started in spectacular fashion. He was called up to Philadelphia for the Phillies stretch run in September, 1980.* The former right-hander went 5-0 in five starts with a 1.50 ERA to help the Phillies clinch the National League East.* Bystrom won N.L. Pitcher of the Month honors for his efforts that September.
Though he did not get a decision in the post-season, the Phillies did win both of his starts and he posted a 3.48 ERA.* Both of his October starts were in a Game 5 situation.*
*The first was the decisive fifth game of the NLCS vs. Houston when he threw 5.1 innings and allowed just one earned run in the Phillies win.* Bystrom helped keep the Phillies in Game 5 of the World Series vs. Kansas City.* He allowed three runs in five innings and the Phillies won to take a 3-2 series lead and set-up their Game 6 victory.
“The Reading Phillies broadcasts on CN8 earned the highest ratings of all the minor league games that CN8 aired last season,” said R-Phils General Manager Chuck Domino.* “Our viewership from the greater Philadelphia region is important to us so we felt that a color analyst with name recognition for all Phillies fans could only enhance the product.”
Bystrom, who finished his career with a 29-26 record and a 4.26 ERA, was signed in December, 1976 by Phillies scouts Hugh Alexander and Catfish Smith. ** He went 15-7 for Class-A Peninsula in 1978.* He tied for the Carolina League lead in wins that season and threw a nine-inning perfect game vs. Winston-Salem on August 12.* He skipped over Double-A Reading in 1979 and went right to AAA Oklahoma City where he went 9-5 and tied for the league lead with 26 starts.* He would eventually pitch two games for Reading in 1981.
“I’m looking forward to working with Marty,” said Degler, going into his 11th season broadcasting R-Phils baseball.* “He will be able to provide valuable insight into the game especially the pitcher-batter relationship.”
This will be the Phillies third consecutive season on CN8. * CN8 is a regional network that is owned by Comcast-Spectacor and broadcasts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. The network reaches over 4,000,000 households in the region.*
