My plan: I got out a piece of paper and wrote down all of my positions, and wrote down $260. Next to each position, I wrote down what I would expect from the guy I got there. After that, I wrote what I thought it would cost. Of course I was over the cap, so I adjusted my costs (and expectations) until I got something that I liked and fit the budget. I didn't include any specific player names. When a player comes up in the draft, I would look at them, and see if they fit somewhere on my team good, and bid accordingly. If I got him, great. If not, it's more to spend on someone else.

Of course all plans change a bit, and I got sucked in to the overbidding in the second round out of fear I wouldn't be able to get a real core to my team. Mistake. And I was actually happy my bid on RJ never went through because I was starting to go a new direction with pitching: spare parts. Pitching is very unpredictable. But as much as it may be a bad thing it also can be a good thing. I started to go for the cheaper sp's trying not to bid too much for them, so maybe my overbidding wouldn't reflect badly on my offense.

Another strategy: I started to pull away from overbidding about a round before the others did, and had tried to call out people who would be overbid on... like Josh Beckett, Moises Alou, and Charles Johnson. Some other owner may have chosen them first but I'm not sure

During the end of the draft I was carefully budgetting, and had to go for a cheap overall pitching staff. I was able to make my offense look solid, and my pitching could go either way. I'm taking chances more on capability than sure things, as evidenced by my going after Daal, Ashby, and well, everyone in my staff. I think somone can emerge as a really good player from that bunch and others can post solid seasons for me. I am lacking a bit in saves and steals though... I could shop one of my catchers around out there, or a third basemen. I just need a guy like Edgar Renteria... ;)

And comments on my players

C- Miller $7
He was a solid choice in case I never got another good C. I figured he'd be underbid on and put up $9 hoping he'd go for less.

C- Kendall $26
Yep. I admit it. I overbid. Even if he comes back and has one of his stellar years it wasn't a bargain, though I could break even. Although expensive, I'm glad my catching is out of the way for the rest of the auction.

1B- Helms $2
I hope my $2 is playing for a full season from him. I wanted guys who look like more than cheap fill-ins to my team, but I'm afraid that's what it looks like here.

3B- Tatis $11
Banking on him being healthy, which is admittedly stupid. Another attempt at spreading a little to make a lot. Unlike Helms, it is more realistic with him. Maybe for once he can make Jocketty look bad with one of his daring trades.

CI- Zeile $16
Not a bargain, but I didn't expect one. He is a good pickup for me. He will eventually qualify at both 1B and 3B so I can put him at the CI position and he would fill in solidly at 1st or 3rd as needed. Because he tries to be a run producer/power hitter I think he will try everything he can to maximize his Coors output.

2B- Vina $5?
Forgot what it was I got him for. I hear he may have a very good year this year, due to improved conditioning habits. Even though I was short on cash, it was well worth bidding up for a solid option. Just wish I got Renteria to go with him. :ohno:

SS- Lugo $4
Lugo should be okay, he could get met some good all-around numbers. Man I wish I had gotten Renteria. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Geek.. Trajedy. My.... arch enemy. I hope I win every player we tie on bids for, and that I "happen" to bid $1 more than you at every turn! ;)

MI- Hill $9
At first I thought he would be my starting second basemen. Way too expensive for a bench player though. I think he has the stuff to clear the hurdles we refer to as Chris Stynes and Delino Deshields at second base. Stynes will have to cover ground for Mueller if he's still hurt, right??? No wonder I got him :hmm:

OF- Green $41
I got him right around the time I was paying too much. He might be my best player, and even ay $41 I'm glad to have him though. Because I paid so much, I'll be hoping he comes out a 5-category player for me, so I could break even or gain back a few dollars on him.

OF- Gonzalez $37
I think he can still be a 40-homer hitter. With a little luck I could break even on him and not be burned by my heavy and naive spending. He, Green, and Kendall need to set my offensive table for me this year.

OF- Jeffrey Hammonds $6
If for once in his life he stayed healthy this man could have a fine year. If he plays a half-season (and not playing through an imjury :hmm:) he should be worth $6. It would be interesting to see what he can do if he did play a full year without being hurt.

OF- Devon White $2
Big mistake. Didn't mean to do it, I swear. Just someone, refund my money... please?

OF- Tsyoshi Shinjo $1
I hear the Giants have allocated a starting center-field job for him, and he has better power capability than he displayed statistically last season. I would much rather have 2 Shinjo's over one Devon White. I'd rather have one Shinjo over 2 Whites, or 3, or 4, or......

SP- Armas Jr. $13
I need to go cheap on sp's because of my foolish hitting expenses. I don't really consider him a bargain, but he is an accurately priced pitcher with good enough potential for me. Paired with guys below I may not do too bad with pitching.

SP- Benson $10
The kind of guys I'm aiming for. If he truly is healthy after he comes back then I just purchased half of an ace for $10. Will be important to my team.

SP- Elarton $3
The first bargain of the draft? After being called the ace of the Astros last year at this time he got injured, and playing in Colorado. That makes him a player for the bargain bin. I like his chances, especially at $3 when you consider how he pitched for Houston in thier very poor losing season of 2000, in Enron field. I will need at least two more buys like these and then I may be able to say I have a competent SP staff.

SP- Ashby $9
More than I hoped to spend in my situation, but I like what I got. He should have a spot and be a worthy #3 sp if he's healthy. This money would have been much better spent on a Houston Tim Redding, or someone but I think he will be a big part in solidifying my rotation.

SP- Daal $8
Again, someone like him should go for less but he fits in well. He has a place on my team, and will get a good shot at an LA sp job. He has his risks but these are the kind of pitchers I'm looking to take right now.

SP- Ainsworth $5
Cheap pitching is my game. Hopefully he fits into the plan. I'm surprised he cost $5 but it's my fault for bidding that much.

RP/SP- Padilla $4
I see the Philly Bullpen as something to worry about. He could help... however he doesn't have a good job, but that's only if the whole staff plays consistently all year. When's the last time every pitcher on a certain team did what was expected of them? He has good stuff, more than one job open for him, and lots of promise, and that's what I paid for.

RP- Wagner $32
My appointed Closer. Most of my saves and also worth the few extra bucks because of how he contributes to ERA/Whip, and K's. He will get plenty of save opps, but until I get either a peice of the LA bullpenn or a very cheap closer I am not comfortable with my position in the saves category.

RP- Bottalico $3
Some possible save insurance. If Mesa goes down, that would be the key to everything for me. Bottalico could get a shot at closer, Padilla would find somewhere to pitch.... but I'm forgetting this won't be a real league.
