MIAMI - Reliever Todd Jones agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Florida Marlins (news) on Monday, finalizing a deal that was struck in principle late last week at baseball's winter meetings.
Jones, 36, went 11-5 with a 4.15 ERA for Cincinnati and Philadelphia last season, and will add depth to the back end of the Marlins' bullpen — something general manager Larry Beinfest has identified as one of the team's top priorities this offseason.
The Marlins will be the right-hander's eighth major league team. He's 50-47 with 186 saves and a career 4.07 ERA in 12 seasons.
Florida has also reached a preliminary agreement with reliever Antonio Alfonseca, who was 6-4 with a 2.57 ERA serving primarily as John Smoltz's setup man in Atlanta last season. He saved 102 games for the Marlins from 1998 through 2001. Alfonseca's deal has not yet been finalized.
