SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- Free-agent pitcher Odalis Perez will meet with New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya later this week, the lefty said Monday.
Perez said he'll get together with his fellow Dominican either Tuesday or Wednesday in Santo Domingo.
``My agent, Fernando Cuza, informed me that Minaya is coming to the Dominican Republic to talk to me personally. After that conversation, I will have a more clear picture about my immediate future in the major leagues,'' Perez told The Associated Press.
Minaya used a similar approach to lure Pedro Martinez to the Mets, meeting with the Dominican pitcher during the Thanksgiving weekend before signing the three-time Cy Young Award winner to a four-year, $53 million contract.
``I'm excited about the possibility of joining Pedro Martinez in the Mets' rotation. Pedro's intelligence and maturity and my abilities to pitch would be a tremendous combination,'' Perez said.
Perez, 27, was 7-6 with a 3.25 ERA in 31 starts for Los Angeles last season. He is 45-43 with a 4.00 ERA in six season with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles.
Perez said he wants a contract similar to the recent deals signed by Kris Benson and Matt Clement.
Benson got a three-year, $22.5 million contract with the Mets, and Clement signed a three-year, $25.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.
``I don't want to sound arrogant, but I believe I deserve a similar deal to the ones that Kris Benson and Matt Clement received,'' he added.
