Boggs, Sandberg elected to MLB Hall of Fame
SportsTicker
COOPERSTOWN, New York (Ticker) -- Wade Boggs, one of the most prolific hitters of the last 25 years, and Ryne Sandberg have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
One of just 25 players to record 3,000 hits, Boggs was elected in his first year of eligibility. Since Stan Musial in 1969, no eligible member of the 3,000-hit club has failed to get in on his first try.
Sandberg made it in his third year of eligibility, surpassing the required 75 percent of the nearly 600 ballots cast by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
After spending his first 11 years with the Boston Red Sox, Boggs won a World Series title with the New York Yankees in 1996. He recorded his 3,000th hit with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999, hitting a home run and kneeling down and kissing home plate as he achieved the milestone.
Boggs will go into the Hall of Fame wearing a Boston cap. With the Red Sox, Boggs won five batting titles, including hitting .368 in 1985.
Thought of mostly as a singles hitter, Boggs led the league in on-base percentage six times, intentional walks six times and hit 24 homers in 1987. A 12-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner, Boggs is the only player to hit a homer for his 3,000th hit.
Boggs could have some company during induction ceremonies as a couple of holdovers from previous ballots are poised to make a run at enshrinement. The leading candidate among those former players is second baseman Ryne Sandberg.
A 15-year veteran, Sandberg was the National League Most Valuable Player in 1984. He hit 282 homers, won nine Gold Glove Awards and made the All-Star team 10 straight seasons.
Toss in seven Silver Sluggers, a major league record 123 straight games at second base without an error and five seasons hitting at least .300.

what i find to be the most disturbing is that 42 people actually DIDNT vote for Boggs....
AND 26 people actually voted for Willie Mcgee...13 people for Jim Abbott..
does the HOF have a requirement that you have to have watched any baseball in order to be allowed to vote?

actually, that isnt too disturbing. I'm actually surprised more people didnt vote him in, based on previoius years. He was viewed as selfish and put his hitting stats above the team.

OK, so what are the reasons not to vote for this guy again? Those 42 conscientious Boggs objectors sure needed to work hard to find them.
How do you not vote for a man who hit .352 for a whole freaking decade in the 1980s -- the highest average by any hitter in any decade since the '20s?
How do you not vote for one of the four players in history to bat .300 in every one of his first 10 seasons? (The others: Ted Williams, Al Simmons, Paul Waner.)
How do you not vote for the only man since Wee Willie Keeler to rip off seven straight 200-hit seasons?
How do you not vote for a man who won five batting titles, made 12 straight all-star teams, started six of those All Star Games in a row (more than any third baseman in history), batted .350 or better in four straight seasons, scored 100 runs in seven straight seasons and thumped 30 doubles in nine straight seasons?
We don't care how many hits he sprayed to the opposite field. Or how many doubles he clanked off the Green Monster. Or how many of those hits came in Fenway, period. Wade Boggs was one of the great hit machines of all time.
But that's not all. He was also one of the great on-base machines of all time.
Boggs had the same career on-base percentage (.415) as Stan Musial. He led his league in OBP five years in a row -- a streak topped only by Rogers Hornsby. He even led the AL in intentional walks six straight seasons -- which tells us all we need to know about how much teams enjoyed pitching to him.
But the feat that defined the precision of both Boggs' swing and his batting eye was this: He had four straight seasons with 200 hits AND 100 walks (the longest streak in history). Which means he did that as many times in a row as all the other players in baseball have done it in the last half-century combined.
So some people may have other ideas. But Wade Boggs was such a slam-dunk candidate to this voter, it took about 1.8 seconds to decide to check his box.

We don't care how many hits he sprayed to the opposite field. Or how many doubles he clanked off the Green Monster.
but that DOES matter to some. that and he put himself before his team. not saying its right, but that should be in the equation somewhere. (albeit a small portion)

why would hits to the opposite field detract from anything at all??
rockin500
01-05-2005, 01:18 PM
because he was being a glorified singles hitter instead of going for a little power once in awhile. a guy at first base, dumping it in front of the outfielder usually doesnt advance a guy more than one base.
imgreat95
01-05-2005, 01:26 PM
so?? it still gets man on base, and opens up the possibility to score runs. That is what baseball is all about. Who cares about power?

Boggs was definitely a slam-dunk, but Bill Simmons has a great column HERE, haha - my favorite part:
Boggs never resonated with fans like other Boston stars of that era. You never went to Fenway thinking, "Boy, I get to see Boggs today, somebody pinch me." You never watched a Red Sox-Royals game and thought to yourself, "I'm glad we have Boggs instead of Brett." Even the sight of the Chicken Man wearing a Yankees cap didn't spawn 1/100th of the bitterness Clemens faced. We just didn't give a crap, at least until we saw an emotional Boggs riding that horse after the 1996 World Series. Then we wanted to punch him in the face.
Here's the picture, as he says, "for any Red Sox fans that still like Boggs."

What amazes me is that 6 people voted for Strawberry - WTF is up with that????!!??

when you are trying to score runs with two outs, power is more important than a single with a guy at first base.

I guess my problem with that argument, Ray... and i am not saying it cant be a valid one, is that if Boggs were to have played the same style of game back in the dead ball era or even in the 30s and 40s, he would have been considered one of the best in the game. BUT, since he played in the "juiced ball" era, everyone expected him to hit homers. To me, a double, be it off of the Green Monster or not, is still a double. Maybe Boggs was just playing to the ballpark he played in? Or maybe he was TRYING to hit for power, just couldnt get it up over the damn green thing.
rockin500

i have no problem with the doubles part off the wall. HEll, the wall is there, might as well use it. its just dinking the singles in front of a fielder that some people dont care for.
imgreat95
01-05-2005, 01:59 PM
ya know what though, if he had walked every one of those times, would people have had a problem with it?
Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldnt just about anyone consider a guy who got on base on average almost 2 times PER GAME and consider him to be one of the greastest players ever no matter how he got there?
Baseball Guru
01-05-2005, 04:15 PM
I totally agree with Shon on this...
If he played back in the dead ball era he would be celebrated for doing what you are supposed to do, gets hits and on base...
Boggs was NEVER a power hitter as he had 1 year he hit 24 homeruns and never had another year where he hit over 11....
Does the fact that Susuki this year didnt hit for power but did set the hits record? I dont think so... The fact is that Boggs mostly hit 1-3 in the lineup and got on base for the big hitters after him... Ask Baylor, Rice, Armas, O'Neil, Bernie Williams or Tino Martinez how valuable of a player Boggs was....
Boggs is one of the greatest "pure hitters" that I have ever seen... Only 3 times in 18 seasons did he NOT hit over .300...
Did you you know he is in the top 34 ALL-TIME in the following catagories:
Batting Average
On Base %
Hits
Doubles
Walks
Times on base
Sac Flies (take one for the team ;) )
Intentional Walks

Boggs played 11 years with us. When he left, and became a Yank, he said he wanted to erase all the years he spent as a Red Sox. He trashed everyone.
EVEN WORSE, the MOFO waltzes into town after we win the WS, jumps on a parade boat, and yada..yada..he loves the Sox now.
F*CK him. Phony.
