Mets trade catcher Vance Wilson
The New York Mets today traded catcher Vance Wilson to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league shortstop Anderson Hernandez.
"Vance has been a valuable contributor to our team over the last few years," said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya. "However, this trade enables us to capitalize on our catching depth to add a young, switch-hitting shortstop to our minor league system."
Hernandez, 22, batted .309 (43-139) with 23 runs scored, six doubles, three triples and 14 RBI in 37 games for Lakeland (A) of the Florida State League last season. In addition, the 5-9, 168-pound, switch-hitter batted .274 (108-394) with 65 runs scored, 19 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 29 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 101 contests with Erie (AA) of the Eastern League last year.
Anderson has hit .258 (398-1,543) with 223 runs scored, 52 doubles, 29 triples, nine home runs, 129 RBI and 89 stolen bases in 424 minor league games in four years in the Tigers organization.
From 2002-2004, Hernandez was voted as the best defensive infielder and possessed the best defensive arm in the Tigers organization by Baseball America.
Wilson, 31, hit .274 (43-157) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 21 RBI in 79 games with New York in 2004. Vance, who was drafted by the Mets in the 44th round of the June, 1993 Free Agent Draft, played with the Mets from 1998-2004.
He has hit .254 (165-649) with 68 runs scored, 29 doubles, triples, 17 home runs and 92 RBI in 267 major league games.
