A bit of an academic endeavor, I'll admit but....
I post this with the sincere hope that the Mets do sign Carlos Beltran, but it's best to answer the question while we're still somewhat rational.
As a Mets fan, in what order would you rank your level of disappointment in:
--Not signing ARod as a Free Agent
--Not signing Vlad as a Free Agent
--Not signing Beltran as a Free Agent
Please cite your thoughts at the time, and what if anything, has heightened or lessened said disappointment at each non-signing.

I personally think Beltran will sign with us so I wont even consider him:)
In my opinion not getting Vlady was a bigger disappointment.. I just think he is an overall more talented player.. I think Beltran is a young good player that I want only because he is the best FA on the market but IMO he is not worth the kind of money that is being offered to him... He hits 30 hr's and hits about .280-.290.. Big deal..He is a legit 30-30 type of guy which is nice but I'm just not overwhelmed by him...

I agree completely with James. When has THAT ever happened? :yikes:
Love ya babe! :luvkiss:
I agree the Beltran will be a Met. Vlad was the one I really wanted simply because we didn't have a bonafide right fielder as a subsititution like we had with the promise of Jose Reyes. Okay maybe we didn't know about Reyes when Arod was first looking for a contract but the Mets did.

not that i am a mets fan. lol but i would think losing out on Vlad would be the biggest disappointment. Considering he is worth 11 million a year less than Arod (and for 5 less years).
and well beltran, he's overrated anyways.

EASILY VLAD!!! I was absolutely enraged when they missed their oppurtunity to land him. Bonds is a sure-fire HOF, but I think pitchers fearing him and walking him have made people go a tad overboard on how good he is. I think Vlad is number one, neck and neck with him though is Pujols.
Vlad's injuries might have derailed him a bit, but no reason he can't get 500+ HR. Not to mention that you can just tell when you watch him that like Bonds, the best is just waiting to come out later on in his career. Think about this, Vlad's career AVG is like .325. Bonds' is only like an even .300... and that's WITH all these ridiculous upper-.300 seasons he's had of late factored in! Vlad's base stealing prowess matches that of Bonds, the only difference being the era of play. And Vlad's defense is much better, topped off by the most intimidating gun in baseball.

Well not as confident about Beltran as I was yesterday:(
According to the New York Times A prominent executive with a major league team said the prevailing thought throughout Major League Baseball was that Beltran will return to the Astros...:Pissed:
Lets see what happens today as today is the deadline for the Stros to re-sign him....

At least we know they gave it an actual effort this year. Unlike just passing up on Vlad because their witch doctors thought his back was beyond repair... perhaps they didn't realize that some team doctors have more sophisticated methods than the the healing power of leaches and drills.
Anyway, resorting back to the list. A-Rod isn't worth his cash, so its not horrible for Mets fans that he didn't sign. And Beltran is already slightly overpriced, so to go higher would probably be a poor financial decision. Vlad's the only one I really regret. However, you know that Carlos Delgado is lickin his chops. Pedro Martinez is a great signing ONLY if the Mets can add at least one more power bat... meaning Mets' management will go balls to the walls for the power hitter.

I pretty much agree with what everyone here has said. I was only slightly disappointed at not getting A-Rod, but the Mets never were serious about him. But I did enjoy watching him fall apart over the least year. ;)
I was extremely excited at the prospect of getting Vlad, who is without question one of the best all around players of the game. I was so pissed that the Mets did not make the effort. I still wish he was one of ours. But it did make the Coupons realize they do have to pony up some dough to get some quality.
I like the idea of Beltran coming to the team, but I'm not letting myself get too excited. Just in case.
So my order of disappointment is
1. Vlad
2. Beltran, if it doesn't happen
3. Pay Rod

I am confused. I realize that you hate all things Yankee, but what about Rodriguez this year classified as him having "fallen apart?" Granted, he started slow, but in the end of the season, he still helped put up some damn good numbers and helped his team to within an out of the WS. Not sure that classifies as having "fallen apart."

Why don't we go after Mags?? :notme:

I am very surpsied that no one is going after him. I dont understand. Maybe, once Beltran is out of the way, people will turn towards him. I dont know.

You think maybe him being injured last season may have teams shying away from him? I personally think Ordonez is just a good if not better player than Beltran but don't hear the hype surrounding him.... The latest update I saw has the Mets and O's as interested teams...

I think that a lot of teams are shying away from him because of the fact that he had surgery outside of the country. Had a surgery which has not been approved in the US, so they dont know what to think.

Also, I've heard pundits say that this surgery may not have done the trick. He very well may need a a total knee replacement that would end his career.

I have always liked Mags... but even without the injury he isn't Beltran (and I am not caught up in the Beltran hype either). Beltran gives you 10 less homers, a lot more SB, and much better D. He's younger, and this is all WITH a healthy Mags. Furthermore, the Mets have been burned far too often by going after the middle of the line FA. They seem to finally be learning that if you buy the top of the line guy and he works out for you, it is far more effective (and financially efficient) than grabbing second teir guys who are still expensive, but have question.

I have heard that he basically has a career ending injury, and it's why Boras is trying so hard to shop him.

bullshit on the pundits. 90% of the time they are wrong. While yes it was a risky procedure, the surgery outside of the US isnt really the daunting part to deal with as the US is so hard on new surgeries.

This is not 20/20 hindsight, but I NEVER expected to get Vlad. Not for a minute.
As for A-rod, that signing was a real coup for Texas, wasn't it?
