The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Rangers do not believe they'll be able to sign free agent slugger Carlos Delgado. In order to pull off the move, the Rangers would need to first trade second baseman Alfonso Soriano (presumably to the Astros) and then outbid other clubs for Delgado's services. Neither scenario seems likely at this point..

I had been quite on talking about this due to the fact that I didn't want to jinx anything. I kept hearing that Delgado wanted to play here, that he likes Texas. But I guess it was a ploy to get his money. I think Soriano is just so much an unknow for other clubs that they aren't willing to take the chance that he MIGHT have a season like he had before with the Yankees. He was not that good here last year. And I am not sure why still?
Oh well, Delgado would have been a great bat to add to a already great line-up we have!!!

News
The Rangers met with agent David Sloane on Friday and offered his client, slugger Carlos Delgado, a four-year contract worth over $40 million. "[Rangers owner] Tom Hicks said that he was going to come to Puerto Rico and give it his best shot," Sloane told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram via e-mail. "He did all that and more. We will be talking to them again [today] in an attempt to sustain the positive momentum we generated today." The Newark Star-Ledger printed the salary figures and reported that Delgado would inform the Rangers of his decision before the end of the weekend.

Why am I not understanding the earlier report about having to trade Soriano first? Is he getting that much money? Just seems like the Rangers would be better off spending $40 million on more pitching.

That's always been the case, but when have they ever done it?

I think the Rangers figure that if they can find a way to score 20 runs a game then pitching dosent matter. lol

You say this with a premise that we have bad pitching?
Did you watch us last season. Our pitchers are young guys that still need to make a name for themselves, granted, but we have pitchers here now. Sure we don't have that great ace pitcher that puts the fear in opposing teams batters, but we have guys that Orel Hershiser has groomed into great sinker ball pitchers. In this park, to get the results we did last year was great. If the kids step up again like last year, I think we can make another run at the playoffs, just like last year. I think we made an offer to get a better DH then what we had last year. And that was what Hicks was trying to do. When the $ got too big we backed away. It was a smart move. Now if Fullmer comes around to his previous form then we don't need Delgado.
Give my guys some credit when it's due guys, stop baggin on the Rangers because we are young. I personally don't think the Rangers have bad pitching anymore. I think 4 or so of the top prospect pitchers in the minors are in our organization. Keep an eye open, we might suprize you again this year!!

Joe, I'm not knocking some of the young arms on the staff. I was just opining that a little more pitching, especially one more veteran arm for the rotation, would be more useful than another 1B/DH.

Willie I agree that a vet would help. Just as Rogers did greatly last year. But where do you turn to? Is there one that fits out there. I think they are always going to look at the bottom line now since the Arod contract. And if they can get a good, proven bat for cheap they will go get it. It is just in Hicks nature. He wants to win. I now am hearing locally that Mags Ordonez is going to give a workout next week maybe, and John Hart said they will be there to watch. He might fit well in that DH spot if he is still nursing a sore knee.
Thanks for the added life to my lowly Rangers forum PT. I always like to talk Rangers, it's just sometimes it gets boring posting to myself in here.

I'm not sure that any veteran starter really remains out there right now, Joe. Just glancing real quick at the "free agent tracker" over at ESPN, the only names I see are Omar Daal and Andy Ashby, and I'm not sure they could really be expected to fill that need. Would've been nice if the Rangers could've added someone like Eric Milton or Jaret Wright earlier in the offseason.
