Well since I have all this time in between rounds I suppose I will have to fill it talking smack.
Anyone got a pick for the worst pick so far?
Think you got the best pick?
Think another owner is drafting like a fish? (apologies to Kingfish)

I like Schilling at $38 as a pretty good bargain for 2nd best SPer in the NL.
I think I definately over payed for Brown at $45 cosidering the injury risk.
If all goes right I have 2 of the top 3 pitchers.

but if you are at the top for ERA, W, and WHIP... what about the other categories... Spending $83 on two pitchers leaves you with not a whole lot of money for offense...

After seeing about 10 players go for over the $41 I spent on VLAD, I feel very good about that pick.

First off I have a specific strategy I am trying out in this league just to see if it would work BUT I am considering dumping it simply because this league would be TOO easy too win right now (or at least finish in the money)....People you are WAY OVERPAYING for stuff....its gonna be sick the kind of bargains I get later on in this draft (and a few other owners who have been smart enuff to sit out of this feeding frenzy.
I mean $18 for Farnsworth?!? Hey I like Kevin Brown and all but $45? Not even if last year didnt happen. $41 for Piazza? Try $31?
Here is the "stone cold bottom line" if you have $47 left and 17 spots to fill I OWN YOU...I dont care what 6 players you have...your season is over.
:2guns:
of course i could be wrong too =)

Nate-
I like a few of your early picks... With the way spending has been, to get the players you got at the prices was a good job by you. I'm surprised i didnt even go $21 on Aurillia

How the overbidding continues!! How I wish all my leagues were like this! The lesson applied in the later rounds will certainly be a painful one not only for those with maximum bids of $11 but also for the other owners in the middle of the cash flow range who will be forced to price enforce the Baum Threat at the risk of blowing the rest of their wad also.....oh I can taste the bargains already!

As long as you dont wait too long... A team of all second tier players is a team that finishes as a second tier team in the standings. You've got to find the median between waiting around and jumping right in.

As long as I dont get in bidding wars at the end and pay $18 for Damien Jackson or $29 for Jose Jimenez second tier players will do just fine...if I can fill out an offense with 14 guys who will all be starting and getting AB's I will be more than happy to compete against teams with 3 or 4 studs and 4 or 5 bench players.
Actually a pretty popular strategy involves never playing over $30 for anyone...I have won with this strategy and with the overbidding going on right now I may never have to go over $25 :hmm:
But rest assurred the Baum Threat wont be late in going off :2guns:
To all the other owners I got one thing to say..SPEND SPEND SPEND!!!

Now that I've completely screwed myself over I can say...
I have
Casey, Rollins and Dunn
and Schilling, Brown, Hernandez, Nenn and Kim
Nice place to start. To bad I'm out of money and completely screwed.
Maybe you guys will allow me to have my shitty players that I call out for the next... 14 or so rounds.
I don't mind telling you the plan is to call out guys that aren;t worth squat and are at least competing for a spot.

Baum threat, I think your stradagy would be more suited for a mixed league. With all the star players off the boards you will wind up with a mediocer team and still pay close to full price for them. There is enough money left by most of the owners to make it so you wont get any great bargins. You should have plenty of money left once the auction is over.

Actually, Baum Threats strategy is MUCH Better in a deep NL-Only 13-team league, than in a shallow mixed league. In the Mixed league, you can get Lee Stevens for $1.
Some of the names that will go for $1 in this league are Alex Cora and Terry Jones. Ken Griffey, Sammy Sosa, and 12 Alex Cora's are not likely to beat a more rounded team of $7-15 players...
My goal was to be THE price enforcer, and take the bargains where I could find them. But its gonna be hard to stop Baum from getting many major bargains. I was hoping he'd slip in Round 7 and go after Jones or Alomar. Instead, it was METS who decided it was time to spend.
The best way to combat this type of strategy is to call out nothing but studs to make BAUM spend. Although at this point, I'm feeling real good about my chances, too, so keep trying to get your $1 keepers and overspending on the sexy names like Larkin and Wood...

Plenty of money left over at the end? Ahh yes that is always the hope of other owners as they see their finances dwindle and they see the juggernaut that is my wallet =)
Trust me there are plenty of studs left --methinks I might even land on here in Round 7. You can try to make the argument that 2nd teir players dont win but I can guarantee you this...teams that have 10 or more $1 players are completely hosed...might as well start looking forward to football season.
If my offense has 500 more AB's I like my chances...I also love the pitching I still see out there...will be hard deciding which players I wanna take =)
Actually Smelly Cat's strategy of calling up $1 players plays right into my hands...leaves the players I want on the board longer. Soon pricing enforcing against the Baum Threat will become a very dangerous thing for the teams still able to do it. Can they afford to get stuck with a player? Can they afford to fill their Utility spot so soon?
Been doing this too long and seen this scenario too many times to be worried :biggrinpa

Aww you mean I got outbid on Andruw? Just as good, METS needed to spend some money =)
Actually in a shallow mixed league the smart play is to get the superstars especially at the thin positions...(are you listening Kingfish?) and then pick up OF and pitching at the end -- always gonna be servicable OF's in a shallow mixed league cant say the same about C, 2B, SS, 3B

Exactly - shallow league, prices for studs go even higher, and positional scarcity plays a big role. Maybe Piazza goes for $41 in a 6-team NL-only, for example. But positional scarcity don't mean as much in a deep league. IMHO.

I never said a team of 10 $1 players would do very good. In my opinion, its best to go somewhere in between. You dont want to wait too long, but you dont want to overbid too often and early either.
