Might be fun...

Positives:
I, for one, am a pretty busy guy and I don't post on any message boards other than this one. I think this would be a fun thing to talk about, even though this is a sports site. We have forums like movies and stuff like that, so why not this? I think there are quite a few people around here that are politically active or are interested in the stuff.
Negatives:
Potential negatives of course are that politics and friends don't mix a lot of the time, and there could be some snafus from that. It would take everyone to have an open mind and not try to shove views down other people's throats.
I don't know, just an idea I was throwing out.

as long as things can be kept civil, its a good idea. that'll be the biggest problem. I dont see any problem with taking a flyer on the idea, though. If it works, it'll be a positive forum, if not, well, we can yank it out.
i trust that most people here are mature enough.

Should have thought of this *before* the election. ;)

Eh, politics is a year round game. :)
I mean there is a lot of crap going on still anyways: wars, potential wars, social security reform, ethics issues, etc.

Don't let Misha see this thread. She'll shoot down this suggestion, like she shot down a suggestion that I had and here's a quote that she used, so beware:
Actually, that is the most dumbest suggestion I ever heard.

Uhh, no. Sorry to disagree Vin, Dan etc, but this is just asking for trouble in my opinion. You thought the Football Forum could get heated?

The football forum hardly gets heated....
But I have to agree with Dan on this....
I have been on other baseball, sports forums where this destroyed them...

Hey - this is a great idea - as long as those liberal weinies keep their scatter-brained ideas to themselves! ;) <-- JUST KIDDING!
Maybe we could also have an eco-terrorist forum. And a forum for the PETA wackos.
Please check your guns at the door.
You could call it the Knee-Jerk Bar and Grill. :D

as much as I love talking politics with everyone, i have to agree that this is just looking for trouble...i mean, tempers will rise, and things will be said, either about the candidates, or about the people posting, that will not be a positive influence on this site...we have discussions about politics in the dugout every once in a while and I think 75% of those got closed, and ended up in a shouting match between the two sides.
if people can promise to keep it civil, it'd be fun, but that will never happen; people care too much (me included)

If there is a vote of some sort, I vote no. I dont see this as a good idea. I follow politics as well (mainly Canadian) but from what I've seen on other boards it usually doesent go so well.

We have a political forum at the mountain biking site I'm an admin at. It actually works very well there. Having a separate forum keeps all the political shit out of the open chat, and people that actually give two turds about politics have their own little place where they can beat on each other. We have not had any problems with political differences spilling into other forums (and that site is about 100x more active than Addicts).
*SPAM ALERT*
Here is our very active political forum:

I have a tendency to talk about politics with no emotion which really ticks people off. I was trained to do this (political science major in college), so for me, it's easy. However unless everyone can keep emotions out of their discussions, I really don't think it's a good idea. Most people cannot keep their emotions checked at the door.
It's a great thought though...
The political outlet in the county is complately two sided and most people are on one side or the other and there is little to no middle ground between them.
Sure it would be nice but there is very little chance of making it work.

I try to be in the middle but I lean a tad but right :).
Yeah, That is always the best to try to do so.
When I read someone opion I'll ask myself. "Does that make sence?"
And if you do that then you will always be in the middle.

I don't think there's any problem with leaning towards one side or the other. It's one thing to try and look at something from every perspective...which a wise person would do. But it's another to just be indecisive about something as important as some of the issues that we have now-a-days.

I think it's a good idea, but I think the rules have to be far tighter in a political forum to keep things from getting out of hand. And there should be a moderator of that forum almost full time to keep a watch on things.

It's not about being indecisive. It's about always being open minded and chosing what side to be on when the issue comes up. Not that you don't know something about the issue or have some kind of an option to begin with becouse it's not possable to not.
And the long and short of it is best to try and always be on the side that is right about the issue.

Don't let Misha see this thread. She'll shoot down this suggestion, like she shot down a suggestion that I had and here's a quote that she used, so beware:
I cannot believe you get this idea that I would shoot this politic idea down?!? I don't believe this crap.
I don't know who said we're mature enough to discuss the politics, you're dead wrong. I've been there and done that. All political shit had been hit the fan repeatedly for a very long time with "mature" posters. The results? Warning, banning and/or lock threads and/or delete some posts. Nobody is perfect, dammit. Nobody is mature enough to have the discussion without throwing chairs at each other. Almost every thread in other forum ended on very bad terms between some posters. That doesn't even surprise me. That's why other forum refused to set up a sub forum for that but allow us to put (P) on the title to alert them there's political discussion going on and enter there at your own risk. That is why I stay away from any political discussion due to my bad temper unless something interests me which is very rare.
However if you want to start that forum, fine but have it as sub-forum and find an intelligent and neutral moderator to deal with those potential hotheads. Don't ask me to moderate 'em...forget it because I would have been in the middle of fights, LOL. If you decide to go for it, good for you. I only wish you all good luck. :) But don't run crying to me because I've already warned you. ;) :D
