At 31, Helton is entering his eighth season as the team's oldest starter. Some teammates have kidded him, labeling this year's Rockies "Todd and the Toddlers." Helton remains open-minded and was pleased the team gave Jennings a two-year contract.
A more frequent fitness program has left Helton leaner and stronger than ever a year after a noticeable weight gain didn't translate into bigger numbers.
"I am just trying to get in shape, where I feel comfortable," Helton said. "Last year, I wouldn't really call that in shape. I was strong and fat."
"He's a lot leaner this year, but he feels stronger and he's definitely demonstrated that in the weight room," Andress said. "Todd is highly competitive."
Monotony, a potential death knell to conditioning, is avoided through competition. Jason Jennings, Joe Kennedy and J.D. Closser are among the teammates who work out regularly at the stadium.
Well he is about the only guy that everyone will know this year...
