This could be a good match. A team that just can't draw top Free-Agents, and a player who can lead a franchise, but is extremely risky.

It may look like Detroit may be the only option for Ordonez at this point. His agent Scott Boras hasn't scheduled any workouts for prospective suitors, and that's turning many teams off, like Baltimore.

looks like his price is going to skyrocket to 5 years/55 million. dont do it tigers!

he really shouldnt get more than a one year deal with a 2nd year option.

Yup. As much as I like Maggs his health will always come into question. 3 years/30 million would be my max.

The best teams in sports are the ones who take risks. Thats why the Tigers and Lions have sucked so bad lately. He's worth the risk IMO. And most of the free agents this offseason the Tigers were looking at were way overpaid as well.

If the Tigers really do want him, they better move quickly. The Cubs really want him now that Sammy's gone.

Let them take Burnitz. Or perhaps the Tigers should take him instead.

Magglio Ordonez
The Tigers have reportedly offered Magglio Ordonez a five-year contract, and he countered with a seven-year contract. The Cubs are said to have interest as well, but they won't offer anything more than a two-year deal. There's also an outside chance that the Mets will get involved with discussions, though they'd probably have to move some salary via a trade for that to happen.

Magglio Ordonez
The Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers appear to remain the front-running team to sign free agent Magglio Ordonez to a contract. The papers cites a source that said progress in contract negotiations is being made. The Mets remain in the mix, too.

Yeah, i heard they already agreed in principal to the deal, and they're just waiting till after the Superbowl to announce it.

And they better have injury clauses in this contract, because there's no way their going to pay him that much for 5 years, and not play.

Wouldn't be the first time.

Newday and the Booth Newspapers (http://www.mlive.com/tigers/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1107256220129650.xml) are reporting it's all but a done deal. And, yes, there are voidable years.

We now have to hope for two things. First, Ordonez can stay as healthy and productive as normal. Second, we have to hope Ilitch doesn't cry poverty after adding Pudge, Percival and Ordonez.

Magglio Ordonez
The Associated Press reports that free agent Magglio Ordonez and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract. He could earn more via incentives, but the Tigers would have the right to void the deal after this season if his injured knee forces him to the DL for 25 days or longer.

At first glance, this deal looks risky(5 at 75  ), but that clause that refers to his injury certainly balances things out. Gutsy move by the Tigers, hope it pans out for them.

not really. This is a bad deal as he wasnt worth 15 mil a year in the best circumstances, let alone like this. And the voidable years only come into play after the first season. what happens if he suffers another injury that only requires him to miss 25 games in years 2 or 3?

its not a gutsy move. its an act of desperation.

I tend to agree with Ray on this. I could see him signing a one year pact for $15 mil with someone just to prove his knee was healthy, but 5 years ? I hope the best for him and the Tigers but that is a huge gamble.

The DET OF situation could be interesting with a questionable Mags, Ron-DL White, Higgy and Alex Sanchez all candidates to break down for extended periods.

its not a gutsy move. its an act of desperation.25 games in the MLB isn't that much first of all. Second, this isn't the type injury that will only miss games here and there for, it's either career threatening, or nothing. Third, i'm sure there's something in his contract that says if he misses a good amount of games, he won't get paid in full.

And the White Sox offered him this much last year, and no one said they would be over paying him then.

actually, it was 5 years 70 million, not 75. ;)

and trust me, many people around these parts were raising big eyebrows at that.
