Great to have a Lions fan on board!!!
Cant wait to read your updates on the Lions and find out what is going on in Lions land!!!

Woody was one of the more reliable of the Lions' linemen this year along with center Dominic Raiola. It seemed most of Kevin Jones' simpler runs were right up the middle, whereas the ones where he had to work for yards were outside. Hopefully Woody can get some rings in his collection with Lions on them.

Mariucci Names Visionary Ted Tollner As Lions' Offensive Coordinator
The Detroit Lions today announced that they have hired Ted Tollner as the team’s offensive coordinator. Terms of his contract were not disclosed.
“I’ve known Ted for more than 20 years and consider him to be one of the best minds in football,” said Lions Head Coach Steve Mariucci. “His pedigree is incomparable, having learned from Don Coryell, who most regard as one of the most innovative offensive coaches in the history of our game. Ted’s been involved with the most successful and progressive offensive philosophies in football from Don Coryell to LaVell Edwards to John Robinson to Marv Levy to Chuck Knox. He will be a tremendous asset to our young offensive players. This is an exceptional addition to our staff.”
Having spent more than 30 years coaching on the college and NFL levels, Tollner’s experience was finely tuned working in three of the most innovative offenses in the history of the game. Given the coaching and player lineage and schematic evolution derived from these offenses, perhaps no other systems have had a greater impact on today’s offensive schemes than those that Tollner is associated. He began his coaching career at San Diego State under Don Coryell, the architect of the “Air Coryell” offense. As an assistant coach for Buffalo under Hall of Fame Head Coach Marv Levy from 1987-88, he tutored the Bills’ receivers at the launch of the “K-Gun” passing attack. In 2002, Tollner began coaching in the “West Coast” offense as quarterbacks coach and he then served as offensive coordinator for the 49ers this past season.
Under Mariucci in ’02, Tollner helped QB Jeff Garcia reach his third consecutive Pro Bowl by throwing for 3,344 yards, 21 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. The 49ers won the NFC West and advanced to the divisional-round of the playoffs that season.
From 1994-01, Tollner was the head coach at San Diego State, where he compiled a record of 43-48. He posted two eight-win seasons in his second and third years with the Aztecs (1995 and ’96), which marked the first consecutive eight-win seasons since Coryell accomplished the feat in 1976-77. Tollner also directed San Diego State to its first postseason bowl game in seven years with a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl (1998). Current NFL players that played under Tollner include Lions WR Az-Zahir Hakim, Cowboys DT La’Roi Glover, Rams T Kyle Turley and Packers DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.
Prior to his head coaching stint at SDSU, Tollner was the Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach under Head Coach Chuck Knox from 1992-93. He moved to Los Angeles after a three-year period (1989-91) as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator. From 1987-88, he was the wide receivers coach for the Buffalo Bills.
Tollner served as offensive coordinator and running backs coach at USC during the 1982 season, and in November of 1982, was named John Robinson’s successor as Trojans head coach. He compiled a 26-20-1 record and directed the team to a Pacific 10 Conference title and three bowl berths. His 1984 USC squad posted a 9-3 record, finished 10th in the AP poll and defeated fifth-ranked Ohio State 20-17 in one of the greatest upsets in Rose Bowl history. The Trojans finished 7-1 in the conference that year and earned their first trip to the Rose Bowl as conference champs since 1979. Tollner was named Pac-10 Coach-of-the-Year that season. His two other bowl appearances with the Trojans include the 1985 Aloha Bowl and the 1987 Citrus Bowl. Among the coaches on Tollner’s staff included Mariucci, Lions Offensive Line Coach Pat Morris, Oakland Raiders Head Coach Norv Turner, University of Pittsburgh Head Coach Dave Wannstedt and Bears Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner.
During his tenure at Brigham Young University (1981), Tollner served as the quarterbacks coach under LaVell Edwards. Among the crop of BYU quarterbacks that developed under Tollner included Jim McMahon (led nation in passing in 1981) and Steve Young.
Tollner’s coaching career on the college level began at San Diego State when he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Coryell from 1973-80. Tollner first started his coaching career in the San Francisco area at Woodside High School (1963-66) and San Mateo College (1968-72).
Born May 29, 1940, Tollner earned a bachelor’s degree in 1962 and later a master’s degree in physical education at Cal Poly. He was a starting quarterback for the Mustangs for two years and pitched for the baseball team for four seasons. He was one of 26 survivors of the tragic Cal Poly plane crash on October 29, 1960, which killed 22 people, 16 of them players. In 1989, Tollner was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame.
Maybe now the Lions will be able to run the West Coast Offense like its supposed to be run.

I think the Lions are moving in the right direction but I fear that they might end up doing what the Vikings are like right now... A great offenses but no defenses......... I like the Lions though so I always wish them luck but when the play the Vikings!!!!

Thanks for the luck. What do you think of Charles Rogers? Is it too soon to call him a bust? It seems like all the Lions have are wide receivers, yet they are the most unreliable players on the team minus Roy Williams.
Durango53
01-29-2005, 11:59 PM
I dont know about Rogers yet also... I would give him one more year... He has had some bad (pardon the pun) breaks.
The games he has played in and heathy he has done great and a game breaker... But that is the problem also. He hasnt been in hardly any games... I am more of a Mike McMahon than a Joey fan. The year that Mike started those games at the end of the season I thought he did a great job and had the team playing for him. Something I havnt seen I think for Joey. I would have gave Mike a shot this year to see what he has. I was just impressed by what he did to finsh out the year that year and thought he got sold short when they brought Joey in and handed him the starting job...

Rumors are going around here saying that Joey might not be back next year. I've heard something about a Drew Brees sign and trade, but I've heard about McMahon getting a shot too.
Durango53
01-30-2005, 10:29 AM
Brees might be intresting because he would have to learn the system. And with the big playbook of the west coast that takes time. McMahon has had some time and practice to get it down. I would give that kid a shot...

I live in Detroit and I am pretty sick and tired of hearing Lions fans talk about how bad Harrington is. He has not had the opportunity of playing with an overall good team. Sure the Lions had some talent this year but their defense is pathetic. Plus Harrington is only in is 4th year and he is still somewhat young. If he played on a team like the Patriots, Eagles, Steelers, or Colts he would be a good QB. The Lions also are not a "team." The Patriots and Steelers have no superstars on their teams but are good because of the chemistry in the locker room. If Harrington falters this year then I would say that Detroit needs a new QB.

I am a graduate of Oregon, which means I'm a big Duck fan, which means I'm an even bigger Joey Harrington fan. I route for the Lions all the time. I think next year is a big year. Hopefully Roy Williams grows more accostomed to the NFL, Rogers hopefully lasts a full year, and Kevin Jones continues to put it together. I think this offense is on the verge of becoming really good.

Mooch has named Joey Harrington starter for next season. He said he would surround him with more offensive weapons. Great just what we need. More wideouts when our DBs cant cover other teams' receivers. Hopefully he means linemen.
MainEventMT
01-31-2005, 06:16 PM
The Lions should be improved on offense but on defense they are terrible. The DB's are overrated and should consider adding one in the offseason. One free agent possiblity is Chad Scott. I think that the Lions should focus on Defense in the draft. The OL needs improvement but that could come in free agency. Steelers guard Keydrick Vincent who started all 16 games this season is a free agent and the Lions should consider in trying to sign him. They could also pursue OT Levi Jones if the Seahawks dont use the "tag" on him but I don't think they have that kind of money to spend on him.
KingDave
01-31-2005, 06:27 PM
Mike-ChadScott was a bum for the Steelers and he won't be any better here, especially since we don't have Polamalu behind him. What we need is a shutdown corner. Bly is good but not great. If we had a shutdown CB, then he could cover #1 WRs. This would leave Bly to cover #2s. He could probably handle most any #2 except maybe Reggie Wayne or Steve Smith. We could also use a long snapper.
MainEventMT
01-31-2005, 06:36 PM
Chad Scott may have sucked in the past but this year he had a solid year and could help the Lions Dime and Nickel packages. He also would provide veteran leadership if the Lions drafted some DB's.
MainEventMT
01-31-2005, 07:05 PM
The Lions also have trouble in their linebacker unit. Earl Holmes is old, Boss Bailey is hurt, Teddy Lehman showed some signs of being good but needs improvement. A free agent possibility is LB Kendrell Bell. If Bell stays healthy he can be a dominating linebacker but the problem is is that he has not been healthy. When he plays noone can match his speed or hitting on the field. The Lions may want to consider him in free agency.
KingDave
01-31-2005, 10:14 PM
all you recommend are steelers. bailey will be good and donte curry may or may not be able to take holmes' spot. that is not a problem yet and the Lions should cross that bridge when they get to it. in the meantime bell is good but you cant rely on him to be on the field when you need him. hopefully we can find another gem in the next couple of years.
MainEventMT
02-01-2005, 03:54 PM
Boss Bailey has done nothing in two years to prove he will be good. A knee injury is something tough to come back from. Donte Curry hasn't done nothing either. And it is a problem for the Lions because they need players everywhere on the defensive side of the ball. I also recommend Steelers players because I am a Steelers fan and know all their free agents. They also have some really good players that are potential free agents. And I think that Kendrell Bell will sign with Kansas City anyways.
MainEventMT
02-01-2005, 05:04 PM
The coaching staff is not to good either. Dick Jauron did nothing to improve the Lions horrid defense. I don't know who the O-Coordinator is but they should probably try and find a different one. There also is no chemistry in the locker room. Good teams all had players who put themselves before the team. The Patriots would not have won 2 of 3 SuperBowl's if their players were more concerned about themselves. The Lions do not have that presence in their locker room otherwise they probably would be and 8-8 or 9-7 team. Matt Millen is also the worst guy involved in the whole organization. Ownership is not to good either. They do not have confidence in their coaches or players and that is why they are on there way out so early.

I said nothing about D-Line but it does not hurt to add depth at a postition. They need some help at DE and I believe some of their lineman are aging but I think there are more important positions to address before DL.

Chad Scott is weak. I don't know the Lions cap situation, but if I were them I'd look at Law. He's got 2 stud years lefty.
KingDave
02-01-2005, 07:49 PM
If we got Law I would be so happy. I dont think the Lions have the room for him, so theyll probably draft one, or they'll do what the Lions always do. Sign an OK player that cant do the job any better than the players they already have.
MainEventMT
02-01-2005, 07:50 PM
Im not saying that Chad Scott is great but he is a solid corner. A possible 3rd or 4th CB. He could play in the Nickel and Dime packages. He also would provide some veteran leadership if the Lions add some young faces. The ankle injury to Law could be more serious than expected and he may have only sub-par years in his career. I also don't see him leaving New England.
PissedPrincess
02-01-2005, 07:56 PM
Oh, Law is as good as gone. The Pats won't pay a $12 mill cap hit. My guess is they try to get a low draft pick for him. His ankle will be fine.

There secondary is not the same without him. I think they most likely will place the "tag" on him. I think that it would be a dumb move if the Patriots let him go. However I wouldn't mind to see him play in his hometown of Pittsburgh.

Manning can't beat the Patriots and Big Ben was a rookie who will get his ring very soon. But Law was physical and the first game he went down, the Steelers exposed the weakness. If they let him go teams will expose their secondary next year. The Patriots I think will be hurting with their 2 coaches leaving them and their defense will need some DB's.

MainEventMT

I don't think the Patriots secondary sucks but they will eventually be exposed like the 2001 Patriots did to the 2001 Steelers in the AFC Championship game. In the AFC Championship Game a couple weeks ago the Steelers also got some big plays through the air and teams with good coaches will look at that and figure out what to do against the Patriots.

Law went down, and Randall Gay, an undrafted FA who never played a snap, had to go in. First play, Ben hits Plax. Now, the Pats had time to prepare playing without Law, moved Wilson, (he of the 2 AFC Championship INT's) back to corner, his natural position, and Gay got experience.
And please, I GUARANTEE you thought the Pats had no shot against Manning without Law. :)

My favorite team is the Steelers and I hate the Patriots but I knew that they would beat the Colts even without Law. The Colts cannot win outdoors and Belichick is one helluva coach. But if it was my choice I would sign Law because his experience cannot be matched by anyone in that secondary other than maybe Rodney Harrison.
PissedPrincess
02-01-2005, 08:26 PM
And I hate the Steelers, but you are the most rational Steeler fan I've ever met. Hey, I agree, Law is a stud, but he's not worth the HUGE cap hit. That $12 mill can be better utilized.
MainEventMT
02-01-2005, 08:26 PM
I don't mean on their last couple drives. The 30-yard Touchdown to Hines Ward that made the game closer by 1 or 2 td's was not garbage time. It may not seem like a huge play like the Patriots had(60-yd. TD) but I am sure there were other big plays like that during the regular season and not just in the playoffs.
MainEventMT
02-01-2005, 08:28 PM
The $12 million dollar cap space can be better spent on younger guys but then they have the inexperience and Law is good for atleast another 3-4 years while they can bring someone in and learn behind a really great corner.
PissedPrincess
02-01-2005, 08:28 PM
I am sure there were other plays in the regular season, but so what? They didn't change the fact that we are in the SB. And I say this in the nicest way, call me a homer, but once Rodney ran back that INT for 7, that game, for all intents and purposes, was over.
Feel free to disagree. :)

I will not disagree with you on the AFC Championship but they were making somewhat of a comeback and if their defense could stop them or make a play like they did all year long, the Steelers might have had a shot in that game. And like I have been saying he has experience that cannot be matched. He could be a number 3 corner and they could draft a guy to learn behind him. Now I don't think that they will spend that kind of money on a guy to be a number 3 corner. His best years are behind him and if he starts anywhere he will be good but he will not be dominant the way he once was.
I also did not mean to use the word "subpar."

Lions Join Nine Other NFL Entities In 'Gridiron Stadium Network' Venture
By DetroitLions.com
January 26, 2005
DETROIT -- Representatives of ten nationally known professional football stadiums on Wednesday announced the formation of the "Gridiron Stadium Network."
The Gridiron Stadium Network (GSN) will promote and raise public and industry awareness of the multiple uses of these state-of-the-art facilities. GSN venues are located across the country, from Washington D.C. to Detroit and Houston to Green Bay, Wis.
The primary goal of the Network is to optimize opportunities to expand the use of the venues for new sports, entertainment, public and private events. The Gridiron Stadium Network currently includes the following facilities:
(Team, Stadium, City):
Buffalo Bills -- Ralph Wilson Stadium -- Buffalo, NY
Cincinnati Bengals -- Paul Brown Stadium -- Cincinnati, OH
Denver Broncos -- Invesco Field at Mile High -- Denver, CO
Detroit Lions -- Ford Field -- Detroit, MI
Green Bay Packers -- Lambeau Field -- Green Bay, WI
Houston Texans -- Reliant Stadium -- Houston, TX
Kansas City Chiefs -- Arrowhead Stadium -- Kansas City, MO
Philadelphia Eagles -- Lincoln Financial Field -- Philadelphia, PA
Pittsburgh Steelers -- Heinz Field -- Pittsburgh, PA
Washington Redskins -- FedEx Field -- Washington, D.C.
“Ford Field’s involvement with the Gridiron Stadium Network is a natural fit, and we are proud to be included,” said Tom Lewand, executive vice president and COO of the Detroit Lions and Ford Field. “Pooling our resources with a number of other NFL stadium organizations will provide the potential for increased business opportunities as we strive to maximize the usage and the benefits of our facilities.”
The GSN will be an advocacy organization, lobbying industry, business and community leaders to insure awareness of the vast opportunities available to them at the facilities of GSN members. The GSN will not negotiate or promote directly an event. However, the Network will aid its members and potential users by facilitating introductions, negotiations and dissemination of information. Events sought by GSN members include: events using the field surface -- such as concerts, music and special interest festivals, soccer, non-professional football, motor sports, rodeos, spectaculars and trade shows -- as well as events using the wide array of alternative spaces available at member facilities. The GSN will assist its members with attracting and developing events, on either a single or multiple facility basis. From large-capacity events to smaller, more intimate shows and conferences, GSN members are dedicated to providing the best experiences for audience, artists, third party, corporate and community partners.
“We are very pleased that these illustrious venues have decided to come together and leverage their outstanding facilities and resources,” stated Tom Rooney, spokesperson for the GSN. “The public, industry and business leaders are aware through national media coverage of football games that venues like Ford Field are able to attract and entertain more than 65,000 fans. The Gridiron Stadium Network is here to insure that everyone is aware that these facilities offer great flexibility. The venues are able to accommodate just about any capacity or configuration.
"Our facilities offer outstanding alternative spaces with the availability of clubs, festival expanses and other unique areas. The group will be able to address single and multiple city needs of a third party as each market and each opportunity provides unique situations," Rooney adds. "Whether it is a rental, co-promotion or direct purchase of an event, the GSN members will have the resources and information as to the options available to them and the third party involved.”
does anyone understand what this is really about? what is the use of an organization where members can't even help each other out?

Coach Mariucci is expecting Ted Tollner to take over full offensive playcalling duties next season. The 2 also plan to expand their offense with non-West Coast playcalling. They are in the process of sorting out the strengths and weaknesses form 2004 and customizing their offense to fit the playmakers we have here.

Its a good thing that the Lions are getting away from the West-Coast offense. They have no guys on their offense who can make the plays for a west-coats offensive team. However if the Lions plan to run the ball then they will definitely need some help on that offensive line. If Walter Jones becomes available, they really should consider signing him.
KingDave

The Lions are still using the West Coast offense. They are just adding more plays to their book that are not West Coast.
MainEventMT

They need to get away from the west-coast. They do not have the qb who can operate well in the west-coast. They may have a lot of receivers but not one of them has proved their worth. Rogers has been hurt, Williams was o.k before he hurt his ankle and when he came back he wasn't that good, Streets was not that dependable, and Hakim could not catch a cold. They need to run the ball more with Jones and see if he is for real or if he was a one year wonder.

A team is only as good as its O line. Bad O line bad team good O line good team. No matter what you do run or pass it all has to do with the line...

Kind of like when the Vikings had great WR and a good RB but no line. Culpepper would get the ball and have to run for his life right away and he had no time to get the ball down field. Run or pass it all is the line. Joey should be fine in the west coast or Mike who I like. But you got to have time to look at your WR...

Make all the excuses you want about Williams. An injury to your ankle doesn't cause you to drop passes and Williams had quite a few of them after the injury. I think that Jones will be good but you never know. He could be a one year wonder but I think he will be alright.

This is from detroitlions.com FERNANDO BRYANT AND ROY WILLIAMS TAKE HOME HONORS AT 2ND ANNUAL "DETROIT SPORTS FANS CHOICE AWARDS"
DETROIT -- Lions’ cornerback Fernando Bryant and receiver Roy Williams were honored at the 2nd Annual "Detroit Sports Fans Choice Awards" on Thursday (January 13) night at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Hotel in downtown Detroit. Bryant received the 2004 Humanitarian Award for his commitment to the Detroit community while Williams was presented the 2004 Detroit’s Rising Star Award. Awards were based on fan voting.
Bryant was presented with the Detroit Sports Fans Choice Award for Outstanding Humanitarian work by an athlete. He initiated the T.A.L.K. (Talking About Life with Kids) program with which he spent many Tuesdays during the 2004 season going to different high schools in Detroit to visit with student athletes and talk to them about academics, peer pressure and stress management. Along with the T.A.L.K. program, Bryant started an essay writing contest in Detroit inner city middle schools. Winners were selected each week of a Lions’ home game and rewarded with an opportunity to attend the game. Both programs were setup through Bryant’s 25-Sports Foundation, which was established in 2001 to provide guidance and encouragement to inner city children through a variety of initiatives.
Williams was presented the Detroit Sports Fans Choice Award for Detroit’s Rising Star. In his rookie season with the Lions, the speedy receiver from the University of Texas stepped right into the starting lineup and made an immediate impact, becoming the first Lions’ rookie to catch multiple touchdown passes in more than one game since David Hill in 1976 and the first rookie to record a 100-yard game since Larry Foster in 2000. Williams also set Lions’ rookie receiving records for touchdowns (8), receptions (54) and yards (817) in 2004.

"DETROIT LIONS NAME FRED GRAVES AS WIDE RECEIVERS COACH
(Feb. 9, 2005) ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The Detroit Lions today announced that they have hired Fred Graves as the team’s wide receivers coach. Terms of his contract were not disclosed. Graves will replace Kevin Higgins whose contract expired following the 2004 season.
Graves brings 30 years of coaching experience to the Lions -- 26 in the collegiate ranks and four at the NFL level. Prior to joining the Lions, Graves served as the Cleveland Browns wide receivers coach during the 2004 season, where despite a revolving door at the quarterback position, Browns leading receiver Dennis Northcutt racked up a career-high 806 yards on 55 receptions.
Graves spent the three previous seasons (2001-03) with the Buffalo Bills, where he worked with a receiving corps that featured Eric Moulds, Peerless Price and Josh Reed. In 2002, Graves guided both Moulds and Price to 1,000-yard receiving seasons, while Reed posted the fifth-highest rookie total in team history (37 receptions for 509 yards). Moulds set the franchise record with 100 receptions and finished the season with 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns. Price added 94 catches for 1,252 yards and nine touchdowns.
Prior to joining the professional ranks, Graves spent the previous 19 seasons at his alma mater, the University of Utah. Graves held a variety of coaching positions during his tenure with the Utes, including: Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers (1994, 1998-00); Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers (1995-97); Wide Receivers (1982-89, 1991-93) and Running Backs (1990).
Graves’ coaching career began at Northeast Missouri State, where he served as the tight ends and wide receivers coach from 1975-76. He then held similar positions at Western Illinois (1977-78) and New Mexico State University (1979-81).
Born March 2, 1950 in Los Angeles, Graves earned a bachelor’s degree in 1971 in business at Utah, where he played halfback and split end from 1968-71. He led the team with 45 receptions his senior year. Following his collegiate career, Graves spent part of one season on the Chicago Bears’ roster and played for the California Suns of the World Football League. "

This is from detroitlions.com too
After assessing the final tallies for Detroitlions.com's three separate polls for the topics -- "Best Catch By A Receiver," "Best Offensive Play" and "Best Defensive or Special Teams Play" -- there are two main factors in selecting the victors of the fans' choice awards:
No. 1 -- The play must be spectacular, in nature....OR
No. 2 -- The play must have occurred during moments of extreme adversity.
All in all, Detroitlions.com is proud to announce the worthy winners of the 2004 fans' choice awards for greatest individual plays:
Best Catch By A Receiver: Roy Williams' leaping, one-handed snare (for 17 yards) against Washington on Nov. 7.
Best Offensive Play: Williams' 26-yard tipped reception -- between two defenders -- at Chicago on Sept. 12.
And Best Defensive or Special Teams Play: Eddie Drummond's improbable 83-yard TD punt return to force overtime at Jacksonville on Nov. 14 -- his second punt-return TD of the game.
They were all sweet, but I don't understand how 2 different catches could be winners when they both fall under the same categories.

I dont like the way the Lions are doing this QB thing.
I have said many times in here that I thought Mike McMahon never had the chance he should have got. He looked good those few games that he started the year before they drafted Joey. I thought he looked good those few games and was doing a lot with not that good players and getting the best out of them. I would be pissed if I was Mike.
I think Jeff would be good with the Lions ONLY as a backup. The Lions have to go young and have to get players to grow with. Jeff would be great to teach a system to a young player and that might be just what Joey needs also...

The quarterback is just suppost to A) Push Joey; and B) play when Joey's injured. I Don't know how Warner did statistically, but i do know that when he was starting, the Giants were winning, and when Eli came in, they were a losing team.
As for the signings, these were what the Lions needed. Good role players, who will start, and get the job done. They're not franchise players, they're going to do what we need them to do. Hopefully now in the drafty they can look to add depth to this injury plagued team, instead of going for need, which there really aren't many of.

To them, if Harrington rises to the challenge and wins the job, he'll have earned their respect and developed some leadership qualities. If Harrington either shrinks from the struggle or simply isn't good enough to beat out Garcia, the team will simply move on. Braylon Edwards will not perform at the level he will be expected to perform. He will be like all other WR's that come out of Michigan, no good (David Terrell). He might have a couple of decent years but he is definitely not a WR that I would take. The best WR in the draft is either Mark Clayton(Oklahoma) or Mike Williams(USC). One big sleeper at the WR/TE position is Matt Jones(Arkansas). He has the size and great speed to become a good WR.

The Lions want to do what most teams in the top 15 want to do: trade down and get more value. Because that isn't likely, they probably will stand pat at No. 10 and -- unlike previous seasons -- take the best player available regardless of need. The team is more likely to make trades in the second and third rounds to acquire targeted players. Though president Matt Millen believes the foundation of a team is its offensive and defensive lines, he knows the Lions have sorely lacked playmakers on both sides of the ball. If he can make an upgrade at a position such as receiver or cornerback that seemingly is set, he will do it.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team?statsId=8
That seems like the only way to go for now...
KingDave
04-14-2005, 10:40 PM
There are several positions -- linebacker, defensive line, offensive line, cornerback and receiver -- that the team could target with its first-round pick. Millen will take the player who can help the most -- and the fastest--because he believes the Lions are on the verge of making a serious playoff run. Because the team lost RT Stockar McDougle as a free agent, it could consider Florida State OT Alex Barron in the first round. The team also is looking for defensive playmakers, and Texas OLB Derrick Johnson, Georgia S Thomas Davis, Maryland DE Shawne Merriman and Miami CB Antrel Rolle are options. It's true the team already has spent a lot of money on CBs Dre' Bly and Fernando Bryant, but having three top-notch corners would give the defense a significant advantage. The Lions would like to improve their pass rush (Merriman), play in the deep secondary (Davis) and playmaking ability at linebacker (Johnson). If Virginia TE Heath Miller slips to the second round, he will be considered because free-agent signee Marcus Pollard has only a year or two left. The Lions can strengthen their lines in Round 3 with Southern California DT Mike Patterson or Tennessee OT Michael Munoz. They will target developmental players in the later rounds, especially at receiver and quarterback.

Lions sign T Kosier, release OL Joyce
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (April 21, 2005) -- The Detroit Lions have signed restricted free agent tackle Kyle Kosier to a one-year deal and released offensive lineman Matt Joyce.
Kosier signed an offer sheet with the Lions on April 13, the team said.
San Francisco, which took Kosier in the seventh-round of the 2002 NFL draft, declined to match the offer and will be compensated with Detroit's seventh-round pick this weekend.
Kosier, who started 28 games the past two seasons, will compete with Kelly Butler and Victor Rogers to be Detroit's starting right tackle.
Joyce completed his 10th season in 2004, playing 12 games and starting three at left guard for Detroit. He signed with the Lions on April 26, 2001 and played in 69 games with 27 starts over four seasons.

Question: How much money does the Lions have wrapped up in the WR?
As the NFC North knows by watching the Vikings for the past few years. You might have a great offense that can get down the field but if you have no defense then you dont win.

Let me look it up, but arguably the best wide reciever taken in the last 3 drafts, plus Kevin Johnson who they just signed, and thats too much for 1 position.
I predicted they'd take one of the Cody's with their second pick, but did they have to give up a 4th to get him? They needed help everywhere but tackle on defence, and it was all available for them where they were. Now all they have is a 6th rounder left.

Lions Favor West Coast Talent, Select CB Wilson In Third Round Of Draft
By DetroitLions.com
April 23, 2005
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Capping their unofficial "Pac-10 Reunion Day," the Detroit Lions selected Stanford cornerback Stanley Wilson in the third round (No. 72 overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, the Lions upheld their recent tradition as draft-day aggressors, choosing two USC standouts -- wide receiver Mike Williams (No. 10 overall) and defensive tackle Shaun Cody (second round).
A key player in the Cardinal's secondary for three years, Wilson was also a standout sprinter on Stanford's track team the past four years. He turned in two of the top times in Stanford track and field history in the 100- (10.46) and 200-meters (21.4). He is the son of Stanley Wilson, who played running back for the Cincinnati Bengals for six years in the 1980's. His father also starred at Oklahoma and is fourth on the Sooners' all-time rushing list with 2,993 yards.
Wilson attended Bishop Montgomery (Carson, Calif.) High School, where he was named All-Farwest by SuperPrep as a running back and cornerback. He gained 1,206 yards and 16 touchdowns rushing and had 40 tackles and an interception as a cornerback during his senior year. Wilson was selected the Angelus League Player of the Year, adding All-CIF Division VII honors as a running back. He was a member of the Los Angeles Times All-Star Team as a cornerback. Wilson also competed in track, and was a CIF finalist in the 100 and 200, boasting a career-best 100 time of 10.5 seconds.
Wilson saw action mostly on special teams, recording two assisted tackles and an interception in six games during the 2001 season at Stanford. He took over weakside cornerback duties in 2002, finishing seventh on the team with 32 tackles (27 solos), adding two interceptions and six pass deflections. He shared time at that position in 2003, starting seven games and totaling 27 tackles (17 solos) with a pass theft and six pass breakups.
Wilson earned nine starting assignments as a senior, recording a career-high 54 tackles (41 solos) with 2½ stops for losses, an interception and five pass deflections. He started 27 of 39 games for the Cardinal during his career. Wilson collected 115 tackles (85 solos) with 2½ stops for losses, 17 pass deflections and five interceptions for 103 yards in returns.

Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington will be among some of the National Football League’s top quarterbacks – past and present -- converging on Greater Fort Lauderdale on Friday to compete in the 2005 EA SPORTS NFL QUARTERBACK CHALLENGE.
The Bahia Mar Beach Resort & Yachting Center will be outfitted with FieldTurf and transformed into a football field for the competition, which will be televised on CBS Sports July 16-17. One thousand local middle school pupils will serve as the audience for the event, which is not open to the public.
Harrington will compete against six other current NFL quarterbacks participating in the event. In addition, some of the NFL’s quarterback greats also will participate in a separate competition during the event.
The quarterbacks will compete in four different skills competitions: accuracy, speed and mobility, long distance throw and “No Huddle.” Participating in the “No Huddle” timed event in which the quarterback must complete passes to receivers are several top NFL wideouts.

 ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Making the transition from college football star to transplanted NFL rookie is seldom seamless.
This explains why the Detroit Lions rookies are participating in a six-week orientation program throughout May and June -- specifically designed to help them adjust and assimilate to the multi-layered world of professional athletics.
Beginning yesterday through June 26, the Lions' 2005 rookies will glean much pre-training-camp knowledge about the inner-workings of NFL living -- from a physical, mental and financial perspective.
For Phase One, Lions head coach Steve Mariucci indicated that 22 rookies (excluding Stanford draftee Stanley Wilson, Oregon State's Bill Swancutt and Ohio University's Chip Cox -- who cannot attend the orientation while their respective schools are still in session) are officially under the watchful eye of Jason Arapoff, the team's strength and conditioning coordinator.
During the workouts, the rookies will get a firsthand look at how to prepare for the rigors of training camp and the upcoming season.
Strength and conditioning is critical for rookies at this point. Mariucci says they trained hard for the scouting combine, but they have not trained at the pace expected at the NFL level. This provides the rookies a chance to get acquainted with the team's training program; and it is not only for conditioning but injury prevention, as well.
In Phase Two, the rookies are participating in classroom sessions with the coaches -- essentially learning approximately 80 percent of the Lions' overall system. Upon arrival, they took a "pop quiz" from Mariucci, who tested the players on what they had retained from last month's mini-camp.
And with Phase Three, the rookies have been tutored by the front-office personnel on the value of sound financial planning -- in terms of dealing with salaries, establishing credit and finding quality housing.
The rookies have already begun the process of budgeting their resources. During the orientation, they will learn to get by without weekly paychecks and with limited monies (per diem) for dinner. Of course, the Lions do provide the room and board and serve breakfast and lunch at the team's headquarters.

Lions reach one-year agreement with McQuarters
By John Clayton
ESPN.com
The Detroit Lions came out the surprise winner in the R.W. McQuarters' sweepstakes Friday by reaching an agreement in principle on a one-year, $1.6 million deal.
The Lions edged four other teams who were trying to sign the former Bears defensive back. The Vikings and Giants came the closest to beating out the Lions. The Redskins and Dolphins were also in the hunt but could only offer the NFL minimum.
In the end, McQuarters preferred going to a team with familiar faces. He played for Lions coach Steve Mariucci when he was a former first-round pick of the 49ers. In Chicago, McQuarters started for former Bears head coach Dick Jauron, who is the current Lions defensive coordinator.
McQuarters, 28, has played seven seasons, two with the 49ers and five with the Bears. In his final season with Chicago, McQuarters showed the versatility of playing cornerback and safety. He's also a punt-returner.
The move by the Lions to sign McQuarters could end their bid to get former Patriots cornerback Ty Law, who visited the team last month. Prior to the draft, the Lions identified cornerback as a need.
"I love Ty Law and I want to think I would still consider him, but right now, with where we're at, I wanted to make sure I'm getting something," Lions president Matt Millen told the Detroit Free Press.

LB Winborn leaves Niners amid trade talks
NFL.com wire reports
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2005) -- Linebacker Jamie Winborn cleaned out his locker and left the San Francisco 49ers as the club abruptly announced plans to trade the former starter.
Winborn lost his job to converted defensive end Andre Carter last week, and coach Mike Nolan suggested the fifth-year pro should stay away while the 49ers find him a new home.
"He sees himself as a starter, and I would tend to agree with that," Nolan said. "It just won't be here."
Winborn's departure is the biggest move yet in a promised shakeup by Nolan, who hasn't been pleased with the 49ers (1-2) after consecutive losses. Nolan said he already received several inquiries from teams seeking the speedy linebacker, who has showed flashes of brilliance since the 49ers drafted him out of Vanderbilt in 2001.
Winborn's teammates were surprised by the swiftness of his departure from San Francisco, where he never played a full season because of injuries. He was among the 49ers' fastest players, earning the nickname "Speed Limit" because of his No. 55 jersey.
But Winborn developed a reputation for sometimes playing without discipline and relying on his athleticism to cover it. Nolan hasn't specifically criticized Winborn, but after the 34-31 loss to Dallas, he was furious about unnamed players who refused to trust the coaching staff's schemes and decisions.
"I guess it's a good situation," said linebacker Julian Peterson, who praised Winborn's leadership and locker-room levity. "It's all part of the business. He just wanted to go in his own direction right now. It's hard to keep rotating two good, talented guys like (Winborn and Carter)."
Winborn had 104 tackles and a career-high 4½ sacks last season while starting 10 games. but for the third straight year, he was injured at the end of the season, missing the final two games with a shoulder problem.
Carter, who also joined the 49ers in 2001 as the seventh overall pick, spent his first four NFL seasons as an average defensive end before Nolan moved him to linebacker in the coach's new 3-4 defensive scheme. Finally pain free after a series of back problems, Carter has adapted quickly to his new responsibilities.
"It's weird for this to happen with Jamie, but he's moving on to do bigger and better things, hopefully, and I'll do bigger and better things," Carter said. "Me and Jamie were just talking about the draft class of 2001, how there were only four of us left. Now there's only three."
Carter and backup Corey Smith both said they learned important aspects of the job by watching Winborn and Peterson. Derek Smith and Jeff Ulbrich are the other two starters in the 49ers' impressive corps of linebackers, which was among the main reasons Nolan converted the defense to a 3-4 scheme this season.
But Nolan, the former defensive coordinator for Baltimore, Washington and both New York clubs, is making several adjustments after his club gave up a league-high 101 points in the first three games. He switched positions for two defensive backs, moving Mike Adams to safety and putting Mike Rumph back at cornerback.
But Rumph hurt his foot in practice and was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam. Ahmed Plummer, the 49ers' starting cornerback opposite Shawntae Spencer, will have arthroscopic surgery Sept. 29 on his ankle, keeping him out at least three weeks.

Can I ask how come Lions fans hated Bobby Ross? I think he is an excellent coach. He is a genius. His work with the Chargers spoke for himself. Lions were always competitive under Ross. I never knew why the Detroit media and the fans hated Ross. I wouldn't mind him coaching the Purple next year in Minnesota. Ross would provide the professionalism and discipline that the Vikings need since Dennis Green left.

Ross was a bozo, who ran many gret players out of town (Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, etc.), drafted terrible, and constantly put the blame on others. The team did nothing but fight among itself.

Has anyone ever seen a team undersucceed as much as the Lions offence has, with the talent it has? I know the Bears and Bucs have very good defences, but come on, this is god awful! :hmm:

i also feel that mooch got a little bit shafted and that all this millen hate is more just a release of the last 5 years of frustration. he is the last guy left. in truth, the ford family should get just as much heat as old matt. i wore honolulu blue and silver to the bengals game

Shefter's hot rumor: Parcells to Detroit
In his Around the League segment on the NFL Network Adam Shefter says the one hot rumor that will not go away is Bill Parcells being constantly linked to the Detroit Lions opening. Shefter also says Gary Kubiak, the Broncos offensive coordinator, has been contacted by the Lions. Here's a transcript of Shefter's words about Parcells.
"The wildest, craziest, most-longshot thing that won't go away... I'm going to give it up right now... I kept hearing it throughout the day from various people... I don't know how much there is to it, but Bill Parcells continues to be linked to the opening in Detroit.
"I don't know if there is any credence to it, but let's break it down: Him and Matt Millen are very close. Matt Millen would look like a star if he were able to lure Bill Parcells to Detroit. The problem is Bill Parcells has got one year left on his contract. Would Jerry Jones ever let him out of it? I don't think so, but that rumor continues to percolate out there. It's the one that won't go away. We'll track it and see what happens"
Shefter went on to say he didn't want to speculate further, but says Parcells' agent's cell phone voice mail is full to capacity, and he's very hard to reach. He says something is going on with Parcells, we just don't know what it is. Tom Kowalski tells the Lions forum -- don't buy it.

Lions to interview Haslett, Singletary about vacancy
ESPN.com news services
A day after being fired by the Saints, former coach Jim Haslett has scheduled an interview with the Detroit Lions for later this week, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.
The Lions have also contacted Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary about their vacant coaching job.
Asked if he thought he was ready to be an NFL head coach, Singletary said, "Absolutely.''
Singletary, an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers, said Tuesday night the Lions have spoken to him, but an interview has not yet been scheduled.
He also has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Green Bay Packers' vacant coaching job, but Singletary said the Packers have not contacted him.
Singletary was considered a strong leader in 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears, but lacks some of the coaching experience of other candidates.
This is Singletary's first season as the assistant head coach/linebackers under 49ers coach Mike Nolan. Before that, he spent two years as the Baltimore Ravens' inside linebackers coach. Nolan was defensive coordinator in Baltimore at the time.
Haslett was the 2000 NFL Coach of the Year in his first season after leading the Saints to the only playoff victory in team history. But he never made it back to the postseason, finishing 45-51 in six seasons for the second-most victories in team history behind Jim Mora's 93.
Haslett is expected to be a highly sought candidate in an exploding market. More respected leaguewide than within some quarters of his own organization, he likely will hear from multiple suitors as franchises begin the process of filling vacancies.
Steve Mariucci was dismissed Nov. 28 after 11 games and a 4-7 record. Dick Jauron went 1-4 as Detroit's interim head coach.
Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Haslett is the only fired coach i would want this year if Herm Edwards isn't fired.
But i really hope they take a good long look at Singletary. Him and Kubiak are really the only assistants i really want.

Coaching rumor mill
Lions president Matt Millen is scheduled to fly to Pittsburgh today for a brief interview with Steelers offensive line/assistant coach Russ Grimm. Millen, who talked to New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis on Wednesday, may get only a couple of hours to speak with Grimm.
Because several teams are interested in interviewing Grimm, who will be available only for a short period today and Friday, the Lions' time with him will be limited. According to NFL rules, a team cannot have additional contact with Grimm until the Steelers are no longer in the playoffs.
The Lions are expected to close out the first round of their interviews on Friday when they talk with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders
The Lions have refused to either confirm or deny any meetings with possible candidates. Club officials said that once they have narrowed their choices and move into a second round of interviews, they will publicly reveal the candidates.
The Lions have already interviewed Tampa Bay defensive line/assistant head coach Rod Marinelli, Lions interim coach Dick Jauron, Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon, former New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak and San Francisco 49ers linebackers/assistant head coach Mike Singletary.
