Orioles plan to introduce Sosa
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles made plans Wednesday to introduce Sammy Sosa as their new right fielder in a press conference at Camden Yards to be held at approximately 6 p.m. ET.
The club issued a press release stating its plans, adding that they were contingent upon Sosa passing a physical examination Wednesday afternoon.

Sosa arrived in Baltimore late Tuesday night. The Players Association approved changes to Sosa's contract on Monday night, leaving MLB approval and Sosa's physical as the final two hurdles to the completion of Sosa's trade from the Chicago Cubs.

The deal was tentatively approved Wednesday by the Commissioner's office, but it has not received the last draft of necessary paperwork.

Jerry Hairston, the central player in the deal going to the Cubs, passed his physical on Monday afternoon.

Orioles officials still have not commented publicly on the trade, but that likely will change Wednesday when Sosa should be holding up his Orioles jersey -- No. 21 is available -- and begin his era in Baltimore.

If the complicated deal goes through, Sosa will be obligated to the Orioles for the 2005 season. He has agreed to waive his no-trade clause and another clause that guaranteed his contract for $18 million in 2006 if he was traded.

Sosa will earn $25 million in 2005 -- $17 million base salary plus a $4.5 million buyout for 2006 and $3.5 million in severance pay 30 days after the trade is completed. The Cubs will pay for $15.5 million, while the Orioles will pay Sosa $9 million next season.

According to agent Adam Katz, both sides have decided to table a potential contract extension, but are open to the idea.

"As far as an extension, that's something that will be tabled for the time being," Katz said Monday night. "It seems like both parties seem to have an inclination for a long-term relationship. He's anxious to get all of this behind him with his new club."

Sosa will become the team's starting right fielder, with Jay Gibbons moving to first base and Rafael Palmeiro to full-time designated hitter. The minute the contract becomes official, Sosa and Palmeiro will make baseball history as the first teammates with at least 500 home runs each.

There have been teammates with 500 home runs, such as Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews, and Willie Mays and Willie McCovey, but they did not all have 500 homers while teammates.

Sosa has 574 home runs and is almost certain to become the fifth player to hit at least 600 with a healthy season.

"As much as we have been struggling against lefties, we can definitely use his bat," Gibbons said. "He just makes our offense that much better. We will welcome him here and are ready to go. I'm excited."

Sosa is a career .294 hitter against left-handers with a .559 slugging percentage.

Gibby's excited!

Actually, I'm pretty excited now myself.

I was wondering what number he was going to wear. I wonder...... perhaps Ray can answer this...... is 21 his regular number?

Ooh! Maybe I can watch it on ESPN at 6:00

And, here's Sammy when he arrived in Baltimore last night.

This is cool... Especially the 500 hr teammates...

I said in the Cubs forum that I really think that the O's by far got the best of this trade... Even in a bad year Sosa will hit ya at least 30 hr's plus the Cubs have to pay half his salary, plus they really didnt give up much player-wise???

A great situation for the O's IMO:thumbsup:

I like this one quote from Sammy during the press conference.

"Baltimore is my new house, and I love it!"

He also said that Tejada is the leader and he is just one of Tejada's "employees."

Ohmigosh! I love that!

He certainly is saying all the right things.

I got to see part of it on ESPNNews. Wish I could have heard the whole thing. But some of the things I came away with:

He actually said something about, "It's not 'I'...... it's 'we'."

People kept asking things about last year, and he was steadfast and kept saying things like, "It's the past. I'm here now", and "[now is important", and "it's time to move on."

When someone asked him about getting his numbers up, he said, showing a wry sense of humor, "Well, I did have 35 homeruns last year." and then smiled...... everyone laughed.

He seemed very calm and happy and content.....he seemed to not be flustered at anything, any question........ very poised, but not super slick.

He talked about helping the kids in the franchise.

Later, Steve Stone (from some Chicago affiliate, I believe) and Peter Gammons were adding commentary. They had some good things to say...... Stone obviously loved him.

One of the things Stone brought up was the lineup surrounding Sammy. These guys are going to be on base when Sammy steps in. I LOVE IT!

Hmm. What else did they say. Steve Stone mentioned something about the guys who are established there making him comfortable in the clubhouse...... he won't have to make a big show, because there are already guys there who are big stars...... it doesn't have to be the "Sammy Sosa Show", so he can relax a little. (I think it was Gammons, actually, who said that.)

All in all........ I came away impressed with the part of it that I saw.

23........... was Lee Mazzilli there at the press conference? Since I didn't see it from the beginning, I didn't see who was alongside him on the platform.

Whole thing was pretty cool, actually. He looks good in an Orioles' uni.

yes he is #21. and yah pretty good press conference. Of course, listening to the wrap up of it on comcast was pretty funny when Jimmy McMahon said he never woulda suffered through those questions.

and again jaymz, i think you dont understand just how untenable the situation was in chicago. so the proverbial bag of baseballs would have been enough when they might have just cut him than deal with the distraction

I do understand that... All I said was that the O's got the better of the deal.. No matter what the reasoning is, and I agree that it was best for him and the team for him to leave Chicago, the trade was a great one for the O's...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if Sammy and Raffy hit 30 bombs this year they will both reach 600 home runs. That is more cool in this day and age than two with 500.

True. Two guys on the same team going for 600? Extra cool. Could make for some excitement.

Rafi needs needs 49 and Sosa needs 26...

IMO Sosa will easily get to 600 and Rafi may need a couple of seasons to reach that #..

Oh. Hmmm. Yeah. Raffy getting 49 homeruns this season is sort of not ......... uh....... in the realm of possibility.

Can definitely see Sammy getting to 600 though. :cheer:

Nice to see Sammy making all the right noises....maybe I'm being optimistic, but I think he might have learned a lesson from his last days as a Cub. More of a team player this year, one hopes.

And I totally agree with James, the O's easily got the best of this trade.

I'm telling you--Wild Card.

There is also a small possibility of the Yankees not making the postseason at all if the BoSox and Os play well.

I like the O's, but that ain't happening. The Yankees will make the postseason, but it's anyone's guess after that. I'm thinking the Orioles don't quite have enough to make the playoffs yet.

Go Orioles!

Don't hold your breath on the wild card guys. I don't see the Yankees finishing third.

O's have the hitting but not strong enough yet with the pitching... They will score, but they will also be scored on very much as well....
