View Full Version : Overated ACC or weak Big 10?

With all the talk about how the Illini are playing in a "weak" conference this year and so many people saying that N. Carolina is the best team in the NCAA (even though they have lost a couple games including a nobody), I am beginning to think that they ACC is overrated.
Duke is not that good. No matter that they beat UNC the other day. It was at Cameron, tough place to win no matter what. Illinois destroyed Wake --> Wake beat UNC. There are just as many quality teams in the Big 10 as in the ACC. Minnesota is underrated, Wisconsin is pretty good, and MSU will go deep into the tourney. Maryland is definately not very good this year, yet they get as much or more respect than MSU or Wisconsin. Almost as much respect as Illinois.
I think that because of all the hype surrounding teams like Duke and UNC, that they are automatically considered better. Certain announcers (we wont mention any names, BABY!!) are obviously biased.
Anyone else?

The ACC is damn good, but maybe a bit overrated. The Big 10 is pretty average this year. No real teams that seem to be real good other then Illinois. Michigan St. and Wisconsin were good tests, but most of the teams aren't nearly as tough as ACC competition.

I don't think people actually look at the Big 11, they just assume their weak every year. I saw Illinois play, and their as good as anyone in the country. And all that matters is March anyways.

i think its a combination of two this year. sure the top of the ACC is very good, but there are just as many bottom feeders if not more in the ACC as the big 10.
but the bottom of the big 10 is very bad too. and wisconsin is very good, but they arent overly dominant. MSU is also very good. then you have the next rung down which is adequate. and then you have the bottom feeders.

ACC has 1 team under .500 (Florida State, who won at Minnesota and has beaten Wake Forest).
Big 10 has 4 teams under .500(Penn State, no good wins, Purdue, no good wins, Northwestern, they beat Iowa, and Michigan, who beat Iowa and Norte Dame, but have lost 8 straight games).
Next best 4 teams in the Big 10 are Iowa, Ohio State, Minnesota and Indiana. Iowa was good early on beating Texas and Lousiville, but are trash now. Ohio State beat Iowa. Minnesota beat Wisconsin. Indiana is trash and is one loss from being below .500. No good wins.
In the ACC between the main 5 and FSU are Miami, Va Tech, Virginia, NC State, and Clemson. Miami beat Maryland and Florida, Va Tech beat Georgia Tech, Virginia beat Arizona, NC State beat Georgia Tech, and Clemson beat Maryland.
In the ACC the Top 5 teams(Duke, NC, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest all are possible top 3 seeds and any are good enough to win it all IMO).
In the Big 10 the top 3 are Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Illinois. MSU and Wisconsin are good, but only Illinois seems good enough to win it all. I think it's obvious that the ACC is MUCH Stronger. I think FSU could even finish in the top 6 of the Big 10.

There is a HUGE difference between the 2 or 3 top teams in the Big 11 and the rest of the pack.. Clearly Illinois is the class of the league with MSU a strong #2 and then you kinda have Wisconsin at a decent #3....
Then there is a HUGE dropoff in quality teams in the Big 11... Honestlyt I can easily see only 3 Big 11 teams getting in with OSU, Minnesota and Iowa as posible bubble teams... More so OSU and the Gophers because they at least have winning conference records... After this week you will probably have only 2 teams left in the top 25 with Wisconsin having a possible shot at staying ranked 24-25....
In the ACC you have 3 great teams, especially NC and Wake as well as very good teams like Maryland and G-Tech... You should see 5 teams get in from this conference at least...
Personally I think from top to bottom the ACC teams are a lot better than the Big 11 teams...
I also personally would rank the BE right up there with the ACC... They had 5 ranked teams in the top 25 this past week (tied witht he Big 12 for most) and their 2 worst teams are only 1 and 2 games below .500... I honestly think that there will be at least 6 if not 7 BE teams in the tourney this March...

That is what I am talking about. Yeah, there are more ranked teams in the ACC, but rankings are based on opinions and opinions can get hyped up. I think a match-up like Minnesota vs Maryland would be a great game. 2 mid-level teams. After seeing the Terps beat Duke (the most overrated team in the NCAA) I would have to say that they would be favored to beat Minn, but a good game anyway. The Big 10 has had some troubles this year, like the dude (cant remember his name right now) from Iowa that is now suspened - Iowa's best player -- and Michigan losing its best player (they are something like 0-8 w/out him).

Realistically,I see the Big 10 getting 4 teams in the tournament.Illinois,Michigan State,Wisconsin, and Minnesota.Indiana, who was playing as good as anyone in the conference the last couple of weeks, got thier bubble burst at Wisconsin Tuesday night.
Ohio State is ineligible for post season play this yearc because of recruiting violations committed by last year's coach Jim O'Brien. The school imposed it's own post-season ban.

How many from the ACC? I say maybe four, if Maryland gets in. Duke will not make it out of the 2nd round. UNC and Wake might make the final 4. From the Big 10, I cant see Minnesota past the round of 16, same with Wisconsin. I think if Indiana lucks in for some reason, that they may be a dangerous team. Illinois will go all the way and MSU will make the elite 8.
I think that the Big East is the best conference this year, yet they still dont get any respect. BC is leading the toughest conference, yet has never been ranked higher than 4th. Kansas on the other hand loses a bunch in a row to pud teams and barely drops in the polls. Everyone is always so high on the ACC because most of the commentators and writers live on Tobacco Road. The Big East should get at least 7 teams in, maybe 8 if the Irish make it (which they should).
It is all a moot point though because Illinois is gonna walk away with it  .

All i can say, is look what the Big 10 has done in the post season the last 6-7 years. Every one of those years everyone says that the Big 10 is overrated, and then they dominate in the tourney.
