SARASOTA, Fla. -- Seven Cincinnati pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout and Wilton Guerrero drove in two runs with a pinch-hit, seventh-inning double as the Reds beat Texas 3-0 Friday afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium.
Joey Hamilton and Ricardo Aramboles pitched two hitless innings apiece for Cincinnati and Ty Howington (1-0), Pedro Feliciano, Luis Pineda, Gabe White and Jim Brower each followed with a scoreless inning of work. Brower pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
Feliciano surrended the Rangers' only hit, a single by Travis Hafner in the sixth. Jay Powell (0-1), who signed a free agent contract with Texas during the offseason, took the loss. The right-hander gave up one run on one hit and two walks in the fifth.
"I was bad, but then that's not unusual for me this time of the year," Powell said. "I'm trying to build arm strength and sometimes I try to generate strength with my body when I don't have it in my arm, and I get hit like I did today."
The Reds managed only six hits, including just one single in three innings against Texas starter Ismael Valdes.
Finally the Reds get some pitching. Sure, spring training means nothing, but it sure is great when they go from giving up 13 and 8 runs to no runs. Hopefully, the pitching can keep it up.:bigsquare
