Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks OT Walter Jones' new contract covers the next seven seasons, but the salary cap implications cover only five-years of the deal. Jones' contract will consume $914,000 more in 2005 of the team's salary cap than originally reported. With the absence of a salary cap for the 2007 season due to the league and it's players having yet to extend the collective bargaining agreement, teams cannot spread the cap hit over the length of the deal. Thus, there is just a five-year window in which signing bonuses can be spread over for deals done during 2005. The numbers could change if the league and players extend the CBA, but contracts in the meantime will need to count according to the guidelines in place. Jones' deal is a seven-year, $52.5 million deal that included a signing bonus. Because his deal was signed in 2005, the signing bonus will count $3.2 million against the cap based off the five-year window.
