Hideo Nomo arrived at the Devil Rays' spring training home in St. Petersburg, Florida on Friday to begin his attempt at making their rotation following a career-worst year with the Dodgers. "He's a year or more removed from surgery, and it takes a while to get that arm strength built up," Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said in an Associated Press report. "Probably what was lacking last year more than anything else was the arm strength. When you throw that split-finger the way he does you need a good variance of speed between the fastball and the split-finger."

Nomo battled shoulder problems and a split finger nail last season, but those were the least of his worries. His velocity was way down and his pitches were getting left in the zone…he got pummeled. Opposing batters hit .312 off of him and his ERA skyrocketed to 8.25. At 36 years-old it may be too late for him to make a serious comeback after a season like that so even if he lands a spot in the D-Rays' rotation we would urge you to stay away on draft day.
