PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Cardinals banged out 10 hits en route to topping the Mets for the second straight day. Eli Marrero and Mike DiFelice did most of the damage early, belting second-inning homers off Jeff D'Amico to pace St. Louis to the 7-1 victory.

Tony Mota also hit a three-run homer for the Cards, connecting off Mark Guthrie in the eighth inning. Marrero paced the St. Louis attack with three hits and two RBIs. His homer, a two-run shot, was a wind-aided knock on a 1-2 pitch with one out in the second.

Mets watch:
John Valentin continued to audition for his jack-of-all trades role, playing shortstop and first base. He looked good at first, working smoothly with the left-handers on pickoff plays. Valentin also collected two hits in three at-bats. "He looked very comfortable on that play," New York manager Bobby Valentine said. "It's only been a little glimpse so far but he looks like he's a lot better when he's playing than when he's practicing."

Cards watch:
Ace Matt Morris' outing nearly mirrored that of New York starter Jeff D'Amico. He looked sharp in the first inning despite issuing a walk before struggling in the second. Morris gave up three hits in the second, including doubles to Edgardo Alfonzo and Mark Sweeney. He also allowed one run. He was spared further damage, though, when he got Gary Matthews, Jr. to hit into a double play.
