The Padres aqcuired pitcher Tim Redding (baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=redditi01) and cash from the Houston Astros for Triple-A catcher Humberto Quintero.
Redding,27,was 5-7 with a 5.72 ERA with 43 walks and 56 strikeouts in for the Astros last year.He was 10-14 with a 3.68 ERA in 2003.
Quintero was slated to start the season behind the plate at Triple-A Portland. But with the emergence of catching prospects Michel Hernandez and George Kottaras this spring,Quintero became expendable.

I'm with you Andrew, I don't understand this trade at all. Stauffer or Germano would have been a wonderful oppty for either to get a leisure look in April. The #5 starter doesn't get a steady load in April so there would have been less pressue. But KT decided it was better to go outside the organization. I'm just as  as you about this decision.
With that said, the trade itself doesn't make sense to me. Redding has never lived up to his billing. His numbers are scary, he lost his starting job last season, and to give up Quintero? I think this trade is a big mistake. And for a particular Padre fan who will not post here but seems to read this board, that is MY opinion.
I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Humberto actually has a better arm than Redding!
My only guess is that they wan't someone to talk to Darrell May about all the runs he has been giving up. You know, someone he can relate to.
May - "Man, I gave up 14 runs in less than an inning today"
Redding - "Don't worry, I'm gonna start tomorrow, that will make everyone forget how bad you were."
