Red Sox re-acquire LHP Myers
March 29, 2005

FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox apparently felt they could not do without Mike Myers.

After allowing him to leave as a free agent during the offseason, the Red Sox on Tuesday re-acquired Myers from the St. Louis Cardinals for a pair of minor leaguers.

Originally obtained from the Seattle Mariners in August, the 35-year-old Myers appeared in 25 games for the Red Sox last season, going 1-0 with a 4.20 ERA. He pitched in two games of Boston's American League Division Series sweep of Anaheim before making three appearances in the historical AL Championship Series triumph over the New York Yankees.

The lefthanded Myers, who did not pitch in the World Series, owns a career record of 17-21 with 14 saves and a 4.40 ERA in 684 games with Florida, Detroit, Milwaukee, Colorado, Arizona, Seattle and Boston. He made nine appearances for the Cardinals this spring, posting a 2.30 ERA over 11 1/3 innings.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated righthander Anastacio Martinez for assignment.

In return for Myers, St. Louis received outfielder Carlos de la Cruz and lefthander Kevin Ool from Boston.

The 21-year-old de la Cruz batted .274 for Class A Lowell in 2004. He will be assigned to Johnson City of the Rookie League.

Ool, who was 6-3 with a 3.71 ERA in two seasons with the Red Sox organization, will be sent to Class A Quad Cities.

I'll take him. Lefthanded relievers are hard to come by.
