COLORADO SPRINGS -- Sean Barker knocked two hits, including a two-run double, as Triple-A Colorado Springs beat the parent Colorado Rockies, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Security Service Field in front of a sellout crowd of 7,033.
Ryan Shealy and Jeff Picker added two hits apiece for Colorado Springs. Aaron Miles went 3-for-3 and Clint Barmes and Cory Sullivan added two hits apiece for the Rockies.
The Sky Sox's Travis Phelps pitched a scoreless sixth for the victory. Seven Colorado Springs pitchers combined to force five double-play grounders. Losing pitcher Jamey Wright gave up three runs in three innings.
The game was played with a couple of tweaks in the rules. The Rockies used Preston Wilson (0-for-1 with a walk) as a designated hitter. Also, the Sky Sox batted in the bottom of the ninth even though the game was decided, because Colorado wanted left-hander Javier Lopez to get an inning of work.
Colorado Springs has won five of the seven exhibition games with the Rockies since 1993.
Ryan Shealy excites me. I saw this kids first pro season and even if he doesnt make it as a Rox (Because of Helton) he will make it somewhere and be a great player I feel!!!
But this season is going to be long........ :(
